Deal Picks this Week

If your email inbox is anything like mine, it’s overloaded with messages each morning from the horde of deal companies offering discounts on, well, everything.  I’m in no way complaining; I love a good deal.  But it can be tedious and time-consuming to go through them all to find the best ones. Yet I still peruse them, and not just to score a bargain for myself, but because I like to try to keep you informed of can’t-miss offers. I often mention good ones on Facebook and have links to a bunch of sites on the Deals page, but thought it might be helpful to post a round-up of great deals (like this one last week) more regularly, hopefully weekly.  And with that, here are your deal picks this week.  Happy Savings!

*You and the kids can get creative with this Groupon deal: $20 for $40 Worth of Art Supplies, Studio Time, and Beverages at ArtJamz in Dupont Circle.  They host an open-house painting studio both during the week and on weekends. A first look at the deal may seem like it’s a boozy happy hour type-thing, but I’ve been in touch with the folks at ArtJamz, and they definitely encourage kids to get artsy, keeping ages 5-18 in mind during the daytime hours (though I’m sure tots a little younger can do some Pollack-esque works, too).  I’ve been wanting to check out the place , and this deal will get me there.

*Guarantee yourself good seats under the bog top with this deal for up to 50% off tickets for the Big Apple Circus from Goldstar. Select seats are available  at a discount for many dates during its September 20 – October 8 run at the Big Top at Dulles Town Center. You can also try to win a four-pack of tickets through my giveaway.

*Certifikid debuted a nice deal yesterday for clay time: $10 for $20 Worth of Pottery Fun at All Fired Up in Bethesda & Cleveland Park.  Look for the offer on the right sidebar.

*If you’re looking for an indoor birthday party idea, this Plum District deal might inspire: The Ultimate Bowling Party for 10 Kids at Bowlmor Lanes in Bethesda for $180. For a DC-area party at a venue other than home, that’s not bad at all. You can also find a deal for weekday admission to Great Country Farms — just $6 (regularly $12).

*This might be a bit of a stretch, but Groupon Getaways has a terrific deal on a 3- or 4-night resort stay in Costa Rica (two kids 9 and under stay free). If you’re thinking about a family vacay, I can’t recommend the destination highly enough – we took the kids this past Spring Break, and an amazing time was had by all. While I haven’t been to this resort or region of the country, it gets great reviews on Trip Advisor, and if it’s anything like the places I have been to there, you really can’t go wrong. Less than a day left to get the deal!

*I’ve mentioned this before, but can’t stress enough what a no-brainer Ebates is if you do a lot of online shopping. Once you’re signed up, all you have to do is link to your favorite stores through the Ebates website, and you get cash back on all of your purchases, sometimes up to 10%! And they have huge selection of stores, pretty much all of the big ones.

*Be sure to read the fine print on all these deals, as there’s sometimes a weird catch.

Spotlight on Local Deals

The local deal sites are loaded with great offers for families right now, and I’ve selected a few that I thought would be of particular interest and listed them here.  Happy savings!

You have merely hours left to get Three Classes and Two Play Passes for Kidville in Bethesda from LivingSocial. That’s a fantastic deal — we did a sample class of the children’s play and learning center last year and loved it. If it was closer to home, I’d scoop up the offer in a second. 9/5 UPDATE: This deal has ended, so how about free coffee instead? Get a $10 Starbucks Card for just $5. That’s practically a no-brainer!

If your kids love the Disney on Ice shows, then check out Goldstar’s deal for tickets to Rockin’ Ever After, coming to the Patriot Center in October.  You can get a pretty good discount on select seats for several different show times.

Plum District has a bunch of offers especially for moms and kids available right now, you should just go to the website and check ’em all out.

You can also get a variety of bargains through CertifikidCurrent deals include children’s haircuts, a family cruise on the Potomac, festival and farm admission, and all kinds of kids’ classes.

Finally, Groupon Getaways always has a plethora of travel packages that stir my wanderlust. And while most just make me wish I could spend my days roaming the globe, there are a few that would actually make easy roads trips from DC with the kids, including a two-night stay at Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg (if you can swing a weeknight) and luxury accommodations at an inn and spa in Virginia Beach (the fine print says kids under 18 stay for free).

These are just a few of tons of great deals available through local deal sites — you can find links to even more on the Deals page.

Local Deals with Family Appeal

When it rains, it pours.  Such is the case with the latest offerings from our local deal sites. Discounts on everything from IMAX movies to holiday entertainment to mani/pedis for kids landed in my inbox this morning. And in case they didn’t make it to yours, here’s the scoop on all of them.

Groupon: See a movie in 3-D at one of Smithsonian’s IMAX Theaters for just $4. That’s a $5 savings off the regular price for tickets. KFDC has reviews on Born to Be Wild 3-D and Grand Canyon Adventure 3-D, both currently playing at the Samuel C. Johnson IMAX Theater located in the Museum of Natural History.

LivingSocial: Admission to the National Zoo’s annual light show may be free, but this ZooLights Package for 4 deal gets you all the extras. For $28 get parking, plus four ice skating tickets with skate rental, four hot chocolates, and four train rides. (Scroll down to their “families” section for the offer.)

Plum District: It’s just about time to start thinking about putting the kids’ smiling face on holiday greeting cards. And for $20 you can get $40 worth of holiday cards, invitations, and more from Pear Tree Greetings to save some money on them.

Juice in the City: What a fun treat this is for kids! For $24 get a kid’s mani/pedi spa package at Cafe Kids Spa. If my daughter were a little older, I’d snatch it up in a second.

Certifikid: This site currently has a bunch of awesome deals available right now — $20 for holiday ornaments and studio time at Clay Cafe of Chantilly, 60% off Gymboree classes, $7 to Port Discovery in Balitmore, and more! Go check ’em all out here.

Quick Links to Family Deals

Some days are really good deal days. You (I) open your (my) email to find an inbox full of appealing offers that make you (me) want to click and buy without giving it a second thought. Well, today is one of those days.  (And had I not been doing my civic duty at jury duty this morning, this list of great local family deals would have been posted hours ago.) Here’s where you can save on everything from fall festivals to birthday parties to Halloween gear to live entertainment — and experience that thrill of the click-and-buy.

Certifikid currently has at least six deals available right now, two notable ones for seasonal fun at fall festivals:  Just $15 for a Package of 2 Weekend Tickets to Cox Farms Fall Festival – September 24th or 25th (50% off).  You can also pay $10 for a Family Four Pack of Tickets to Frederick’s Oktoberfest – Includes an All-Access Pass to the Kidz Zone (50% off)

LivingSocial’s DC Family Edition can help  get the birthday party started with these offers: $87 for a Five-Hour Inflatable Play Rental from LoveBounce AND $29 for a Ninja Birthday Party or One Month of Unlimited Tae Kwon Do Classes

Plum District is giving a nod to the new season with discounts on Halloween gear and a fun farm experience: Pay $20 for $40 Worth of Costumes and Halloween Merchandise at Halloween Express; pay $6 for Entry to Great Country Farms (a $12 Value).  It’s also just $20 for the National Geographic World Almanac 2012 and Three Weird But True Books

Mamasource also has a costume deal going on right now: $20 for $40 to spend at PowerCapes.  And one of my favorite things about this deal site is that 5% of your purchase payment can go to a school of your choice.

Groupon can help make family travel a little easier with an offer for airport transportation: $60 for a One-Way Trip to or from Reagan, Dulles, or BWI Airport ($140 Value).  Look for the deal on the right-hand sidebar — you only have a few more hours to get in on it.

The Capitol Deal is making entertainment cheaper: For $20 get $50 to Spend on Sports, Concert and Theater Tickets at ScoreBig, an online discount ticket outlet.

And, finally, Buy With Me has more fall fun on sale: Just $9 for Admission to The Corn Maize in The Plains – that’s half off the regular price.  The deal will likely appear in the right sidebar of the home page.

Happy Savings!
