Enter to Win a $50 Credit to Goldstar!

HPT2gen_300x250_44k_a_al_022212

Surely, you’ve checked out the KFDC Deals page by now, where I’ve compiled a list of websites that offer discounts on all kinds of local activities and adventures.

Among them is my go-to link for deals on a variety of entertainment: Goldstar. If I’m planning to buy tickets to a performance, sporting event, special tour, or even one of the few museums in DC that requires an admission fee, I always check Goldstar to see if there’s a deal on it first. And, often, I just browse the site to see what’s happening around town that I might be interested doing or seeing or covering here on the blog.

Currently they have discounts on tickets to Nats games, the International Spy Museum, the Crime & Punishment Museum, Boomerang Pirate Ship cruises on the Potomac, Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat at Adventure Theatre, and ComedySportz 4 Kidz. And those are just some of the family-friendly offers. If you’re looking for something to do sans kids, there are even more fantastic savings to be had.

There are service fees with every purchase, but they are listed up front along with the number of tickets and days remaining to get the deal. (And even with the fees, it’s still always less than the regular price.) And sometimes, tickets are even “comp” or free!

Giveaway: To entice you to check out Goldstar, they are giving one lucky KFDC reader a $50 credit to use toward any purchases. To enter, you must click here and sign up to be a Goldstar member. After you’ve done that, come back and leave a comment letting me know you did. That’s it — easy peasy. The giveaway will run through Sunday, August 11, and a winner will be notified by Monday, August 12. Good luck! And Happy Savings!

Deal Picks this Week

If your email inbox is anything like mine, it’s overloaded with messages each morning from the horde of deal companies offering discounts on, well, everything.  I’m in no way complaining; I love a good deal.  But it can be tedious and time-consuming to go through them all to find the best ones. Yet I still peruse them, and not just to score a bargain for myself, but because I like to try to keep you informed of can’t-miss offers. I often mention good ones on Facebook and have links to a bunch of sites on the Deals page, but thought it might be helpful to post a round-up of great deals (like this one last week) more regularly, hopefully weekly.  And with that, here are your deal picks this week.  Happy Savings!

*You and the kids can get creative with this Groupon deal: $20 for $40 Worth of Art Supplies, Studio Time, and Beverages at ArtJamz in Dupont Circle.  They host an open-house painting studio both during the week and on weekends. A first look at the deal may seem like it’s a boozy happy hour type-thing, but I’ve been in touch with the folks at ArtJamz, and they definitely encourage kids to get artsy, keeping ages 5-18 in mind during the daytime hours (though I’m sure tots a little younger can do some Pollack-esque works, too).  I’ve been wanting to check out the place , and this deal will get me there.

*Guarantee yourself good seats under the bog top with this deal for up to 50% off tickets for the Big Apple Circus from Goldstar. Select seats are available  at a discount for many dates during its September 20 – October 8 run at the Big Top at Dulles Town Center. You can also try to win a four-pack of tickets through my giveaway.

*Certifikid debuted a nice deal yesterday for clay time: $10 for $20 Worth of Pottery Fun at All Fired Up in Bethesda & Cleveland Park.  Look for the offer on the right sidebar.

*If you’re looking for an indoor birthday party idea, this Plum District deal might inspire: The Ultimate Bowling Party for 10 Kids at Bowlmor Lanes in Bethesda for $180. For a DC-area party at a venue other than home, that’s not bad at all. You can also find a deal for weekday admission to Great Country Farms — just $6 (regularly $12).

*This might be a bit of a stretch, but Groupon Getaways has a terrific deal on a 3- or 4-night resort stay in Costa Rica (two kids 9 and under stay free). If you’re thinking about a family vacay, I can’t recommend the destination highly enough – we took the kids this past Spring Break, and an amazing time was had by all. While I haven’t been to this resort or region of the country, it gets great reviews on Trip Advisor, and if it’s anything like the places I have been to there, you really can’t go wrong. Less than a day left to get the deal!

*I’ve mentioned this before, but can’t stress enough what a no-brainer Ebates is if you do a lot of online shopping. Once you’re signed up, all you have to do is link to your favorite stores through the Ebates website, and you get cash back on all of your purchases, sometimes up to 10%! And they have huge selection of stores, pretty much all of the big ones.

*Be sure to read the fine print on all these deals, as there’s sometimes a weird catch.

Top o’ the Weekend

The hills are alive with the sound of Sasha...

If the alpine landscape in the photo didn’t give it away, the jacket surely did.  We’re not in DC.  But even on vacation in the mountains of Colorado, I remain a dedicated blogger.  And with that, here are this week’s recommendations for fun with the kids FRiday through Sunday…in the DC-metro. Happy Weekend!

LEGOS Galore  BrickFair, the nation’s largest LEGO Fan Festival, takes place Saturday and Sunday at the Dulles Expo & Conference Center. From 11am – 4pm both days, guests can behold some amazing creations constructed by LEGO enthusiasts from around the world. Admission is $9/person, $30/family of 4, free for children 3 and under.

Movies Under the Stars – The 15th Annual Comcast Outdoor Film Festival began last night and continues this evening with a viewing of Tangled at 8:30pm.  Taking place at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, several more family films will be screened throughout the weekend, and there will on-site dining (popcorn, candy, pizza, & fare from Hard Times Cafe of Bethesda).  Admission is free, but $1 food tickets can be purchased there, with a portion of the proceeds going to NIH Children’s Charities.

Mail Art WorkshopDiscover the fun of creative correspondence at the National Postal Museum. They’ll provide colorful materials, canceled postage stamps, inspiration, and everything else needed to make a unique piece of mail art. Drop in, get creative, and send the mail on its way to brighten someone’s day.

Edible Color WheelThe Corcoran is hosting a free art workshop for kids ages 4-12 on Saturday from 10:30am – 2pm. Participants will use icing to discover how to mix primary colors into secondary colors and create their own edible color wheels.

Fairfax County 4-H FairThe fun began Thursday at Frying Pan Farm Park with an old-fashioned carnival featuring amusements, rides, and food vendors that runs through the weekend. The 4-H part of the 63rd Annual Fairfax County 4-H Fair takes place on Saturday and Sunday.  See the website for schedules and more details.

Get a Legg UpThe final matches of the annual Legg Mason Tennis Classic will be played this weekend.  Tickets, while not cheap, are still available for all of the sessions.  Visit the official website to see who is still swinging in the tourney and to reserve seats online.

Children’s Theatre-in-the-WoodsThere’s only one more week to enjoy Wolf Trap’s summer family theatre series.  On Saturday, Secret Agent Skidoo and Instant Opera! Will take the outdoor stage among the trees.  Tickets are $8 for both shows. Read the KFDC review of the CTITW series here.

International Spy MuseumPut a little mystery into the weekend with a visit to the International Spy Museum.  I know… it’s one of the few DC museums that charges admission, but Goldstar currently has a deal for half-price tickets. The exhibits would probably be enjoyed best by kids ages 5 and older.

And these KFDC posts have even more ideas for recreation with the kids:

Joys of Summer

The Best Places in the DC Area to Enjoy a Beautiful Day Outdoors with the Kids

Rainy Day Recreation (ie, Indoor Fun)

Stay Entertained Through Summer

And be sure to have a gander at last weekend’s suggestions, several of which remain relevant now.
