The Lightning Thief Rocks Adventure Theatre this Summer (+ Giveaway)!

Percy Jackson is coming to town for the summer as The Lightning Thief  opens at Adventure Theatre this weekend!  Kids can see one of their storybook heroes come to life in a dynamic rock musical adaptation of Rick Riordan’s bestselling book.  Even more, there’s a chance to win tickets to a performance!

The story follows Percy Jackson, a seemingly ordinary teen who discovers he’s a demigod — then embarks on an epic journey with his friends to find Zeus’ missing lightning bolt and prevent a war among the gods.  The show — with rock music, fast-paced action, and lots of laughs — is packed with fun for kids, tweens, and anyone who likes a good adventure, from die-hard Percy Jackson fans to those new to the world of Camp Half-Blood.

The Lightning Thief runs from June 27 – August 17 with performances Friday – Monday.  The show is recommended for ages 7 and up — it’s a rock musical that contains flashing lights, stage combat, and preteen/teen angst that could be too much for younger children.

The National Air & Space Museum is a cool place to hang during the heatwave

1. Holy heatwave.😅 Luckily, the DC area is full of places and activities to stay cool as the temps soar, and this post just published last week will lead you to them.

2.  You’ll be able to add one more activity to that indoor mix starting next week when Momentum Park(our) opens at the National Building Museum.  The high-energy, limited-time activation will turn part of the museum’s stunning Great Hall into a parkour environment from Thursday, July 3 to Sunday, July 20.  Guests can learn and try out some parkour moves (with the help of coaches on hand), join special workshops (sign up soon here), see performances and demos, and check out immersive projections and photography that spotlight the parkour culture.  All ages are welcome — there are elements that everyone, from littles to adults, can enjoy. Parkour tickets are $5 plus regular museum admission ($7/youth & students, $10/adults) — they will be available through the website soon!

3. Want to have a blast while supporting a great cause?  On July 9, the annual Home Runs for Horton’s Kids will take over Nationals Park, transforming it into a playground for kids and adults of all ages. The fun includes batting practice in the Nationals batting cages right on the field, a fast-pitch competition in the bullpen, grab-and-go stadium fare, snacks and drinks (including drinks and fare right on the field), a kids race with Teddy, kids base-running, carnival games, bounce houses, and much more!  Proceeds from ticket sales will directly benefit Horton’s Kids’ vital mission programs, helping to create brighter futures for children and families in one of DC ‘s most under-resourced communities.

4. Can’t say enough good things about Compliments Only, the sub shop on Barracks Row that we just tried for the first time (why it took so long, I have no idea). So good! Locations in Capitol Hill and Dupont Circle.

5. Amazon Prime Day, which is actually a few days when you can score amazing deals of all kinds of items, is happening July 8-11, and there are some very early deals to shop now.  You need to be a Prime member to take advantage, so if you’re not already, sign up here.  Access to the sale alone practically makes it worth it. Not to mention free, fast delivery on so many products (often within a day or two), Grub Hub with no service fees, grocery deals at Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods, and much more!

Stay late at the museums on the Mall this weekend!

1. Summer officially begins this weekend, and the Smithsonian is celebrating with its annual Solstice Saturday!  All of the National Mall museums will be staying open late and hosting special programs and performances throughout the day and evening — go here for details and schedules.   Beyond the Mall, the National Zoo will have its own Science Solstice Saturday from 10am – 2pm.  And not part of the Smithsonian, but a neighbor on the Mall, the National Gallery of Art is hosting a Summer Solstice Festival.  All of these events to kick off the season are FREE!

2. Did you know you can enjoy weekly children’s entertainment at Eastern Market on Capitol Hill?  Kidsinger Jim, who has been performing for children and families for over 30 years, performs his music and puppetry, and he also presents other entertainers. This Friday at 10:30am, Rocknoceros will be playing a concert for the kiddie set.  Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door, and siblings under 6 months are free.

3. The National Children’s Museum is extending hours this summer.  Starting this Thursday, June 19, through Sunday, August 31, it will be open 9am – 6pm for two extra hours of play every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Monday and Wednesday hours will remain 9:30am – 4:30pm, and Tuesday 9:30-11:30am for field trips only. Tickets can be purchased in advance.  Read more about the museum full of STEAM-inspired interactive exhibits in this KFDC post.

4. Have you heard of the Claim app?  It’s a social app that rewards users with cash back for spending at partner brands, mostly restaurants and coffee shops.  What’s the catch?  Here’s what they say: “Brands pay a fortune to Big Tech’s social apps to bombard you with ads until you buy stuff from them.  On Claim, our partner brands pay you directly to try them. Claim securely validates your purchases and reimburses you. We take a small fee each time you spend at one of our partner brands.”  If you’re interested in checking it out, you can use the referral code H6UUZM that will give you a $12 Claim for Starbucks!
