Arlington County Fair
We’ve been to this fair and have had a great time. It’s big enough for a fun-filled day, but not so huge that it’s overwhelming and you feel rushed to get to everything. There are carnival rides for everyone from toddlers to adults, and the kids especially loved the pony rides and piglet races when they were younger. You can also check out competitive exhibits, enjoy live entertainment, cheer on a variety of racing animals, view outdoor movies, and take little ones to the Kids’ Court for moon bouncing, face painting, and more.  There’s also a beer garden for adults,

Five Things: August 26, 2025

Putt Across America at The Wharf

1. Labor Day this coming Monday is the unofficial end of summer, which means a lot of seasonal fun is winding down, too.  Some of the early September closings include outdoor pools and waterparks; mini golf, carousels, and mini train rides at a few locations; Annmarie Sculpture Garden’s fairy and gnome house exhibit, and more activities and programs.  If you’re hoping to enjoy these pursuits before they end for awhile, now’s the time.  The 2025 KFDC Guide to Summer Around DC has details on all of them, including others that will continue for a few more weeks.

2. For a series that is just getting started…  Outdoor Movies at Bridge District begin this Friday, August 29, and take place again September 19 and October 10.  The free screenings will be shown at the foot of the Frederick Douglass Bridge at 633 Howard Road SE.  This weekend, enjoy Black Panther along with complimentary popcorn.  Doors open at 7pm, and the movie starts at 8pm.

3. This sounds super fun…  Activate, the world’s first active gaming facility, is opening its first area location in Sterling, VA, this Wednesday, August 27.   It sounds like being in a real-life video game, with physical challenges and cutting-edge technology in 11 dynamic game rooms that react in real time to players’ movements.  Kids as young as 6 can play, but ages 6-13 need to be accompanied by an adult.  They’re offering free play through Saturday, August 30.  After that admission is $28/hour, $38/90 minutes.  Can’t wait to try it!

4. Amazon’s Labor Day Sale has begun and, like all their sales, amazing deals can be scored.  Some standouts:  JBL noise cancelling earbuds, a robot vacuum, highly rated air fryer, always needed water bottles, a nice family activity at home, weighted vest (it’s all the middle-age rage).

5. “The Air and Space Museum makes several references to well-known celestial bodies, but makes no mention of the president’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.” – Smithsonian Exhibits that the White House Finds Objectionable

Five Things: August 18, 2025

1.  Let the merriment begin!  The Maryland Renaissance Festival starts this Saturday, August 23, and runs every weekend through October 19.  It’s my favorite annual event in the DC area, so I’ve written about it a ton on the blog, but this particular post and this one have good insight and tips for navigating it all. And this first one has some more background on it (plus Owen’s little 2-year-old mug). Tickets are sold online only:  $14/age 7-15, $26/age 16+, $23/seniors from August 23 – September 7,  then $18/age 7-18, $32/age 16+, $28/seniors from September 8 – October 19 (free for ages 6 and under).  They are still available for this weekend, but will likely sell out, so get yours soon.  Huzzah!

2. Arena Stage is hosting its FREE annual Community Day this Saturday, August 23.  This year, they’re taking over 6th Street SW for an outdoor block party along with an indoor open house. The event will be full of connection, creativity, and joy — enjoy live music, dancing, and special performances; local vendors along 6th Street; food trucks and sweet treats, hands-on arts activities; games and surprises for all ages; and more!

3. If you’re looking for something special to do with kids this week before they head back to school, consider an excursion on the high Chesapeake seas! It’s the last chance for weekday sailings with Pirate Adventures on the Chesapeake, which offers “treasure hunting” experiences on the water in Annapolis.  Read more about one of our sails with them waaaay back — it’s essentially the same, which means it’s still super fun!

4. For something to do in DC that’s just a few blocks off the beaten National Mall path, Ford’s Theatre is really interesting and often not on the local radar.  The venue isn’t just a place to see live entertainment; the National Historic Site also includes a museum that explores Abraham Lincoln’s life (and death) as well as Petersen House across the street.  You can reserve tickets online in advance for $3.50 or get them at the Box Office for free (first come, first serve).

5. It’s time for new lunchboxes! Some great options:  Groovy retro (if only it were metal); Bento with a thermos; Cute patterns for kiddos; Cool color blocks; Classic L.L. Bean.
