Five Things: April 22, 2026

1. Happy Earth Day! In honor of the occasion, let’s highlight some great places to enjoy nature around the area.  The round-up of places to hike with kids is full of recommendations. And some nature centers:  Buddie Ford  in Alexandria, Watkins in Upper Marlboro, Potomac Overlook in Arlington, Long Branch in Falls Church, and Brookside in Silver Spring.

2. Calling all Indiana Jones wannabes!  The Young Archaeologists’ Club is starting up soon. The free, hands-on educational opportunity welcomes kids ages 8-14 to explore archaeology through games, puzzles, crafts, and teamwork. (Younger students may attend when accompanied by an adult.)  Instructed by professional archaeologists and educators, sessions begins with a 30-minute intro to archaeology activity and careers in the field.   Locations, topics, dates, and times vary from May to August. The first session will be held at the Takoma Park Neighborhood Library on May 9.  Registration is required for all students.

3. Have kids who like to get artsy? A brand-new art studio is opening at Hilltop Village Center in Alexandria, and they’re ready to bring BIG color and creativity to your child’s summer! Children’s Art Classes Alexandria is now enrolling for 7 weeks of Summer Art Workshops (June 29–August 14) — think drawing, painting, clay, mixed media, and all the wonderfully messy, imaginative fun kids love! When summer wraps, the creativity keeps going with their after-school art program from late August through May. To celebrate their Grand Opening, families who enroll in a Summer Workshop will have the school-year registration fee waived.

4. It’s a perfect time to get kids into gardening, and this cute kit is a great way to start.

5. Reopening on Friday!

See Aesop’s Fables Come to Life at Adventure Theatre (+ Giveaway)!

The newest production at Adventure Theatre will bring some classics to the stage. From April 24 – May 24, Aesop’s Fables presents several “life lessons” stories we all know well in Adventure Theatre’s signature fun, charming style that audiences of all ages adore.  Even more, you have a chance to win tickets to see it!

Aesop’s Fables is a vibrant, theatrical adventure that brings timeless tales to life with wit, warmth, and whimsy. Adapted by acclaimed playwright Mike Kenny, this fast-paced production features a lovable troupe of traveling storytellers—Wolfie, Syd, Harriet, and Barry—who use humor and imagination to retell five classic fables: The Tortoise and the Hare, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, The Wind and the Sun, The Lion and the Mouse, and The Wolf and the Jackdaw. Each story delivers a valuable life lesson on patience, honesty, kindness, and perseverance, making it a delightful experience that entertains while inspiring young audiences to think, feel, and grow.

Along with the show, Adventure Theatre is presenting an opportunity to help support a great cause. Aesop’s Fables plush toys will be for sale, and if you purchase one, Adventure Theatre will donate its twin to Montgomery County Family Justice Center Foundation, a nonprofit that supports families who are victims of domestic violence who frequently have to flee with no personal belongings.

Five Things: April 15, 2026

1. Sandbox VR, a futuristic virtual reality experience, just opened a new location at CityCenterDC.  I had a chance to check it out last week, and it’s so cool!  We previewed a Squid Game experience, and it really felt like we were in the arena, competing in different games — grabbing and catching things, dodging them, falling down chutes. Other experiences include Age of Dinosaurs, Stranger Things, and several more that transport you to neat virtual environments.  While they don’t specify a minimum age to play, guests must be at least 48″ tall.  Visit the website to see more about it.

2. A new education center especially for kids is coming to Library of Congress. Opening May 9,  The Source will be a space for children ages 8 years and older and their families to “discover how information and research can nourish curiosity, creativity and change.” There will be a special Family Day to celebrate the opening with hands-on activities, performances, and collections displays, along with opportunities to explore the new learning space. Register for free tickets here.

3. How about a real life night at the museum? Dates for this summer’s Smithsonian Sleepovers have just been announced.  At these overnight experiences, kids ages 8 to 14 and their adult chaperones, can explore the National Museum of Natural History or National Museum of American History through guided activities, games, and hands-on learning. See more details and dates here. And register soon, as they tend to fill up quickly.

4. Just in time for Mother’s Day…. Wild District Blooms is a new flower business started by local mom, Rebecca Green. It began as a backyard project and is now shared with the community through simple, seasonal offerings.  Her bouquets are lovely, and she also supplies to florists and for personal use. Subscribe to her Bloom List to see what’s available each week.

5. Anyone else have Beiber Fever?  🤩
