Roam Free
Where: Dumbarton Oaks Gardens | Georgetown, DC
When: Throughout the weekend, 2-5pm
Admission: Free

This weekend is the last chance until the fall to take advantage of free admission to Dumbarton Oaks Gardens. From November through mid-March, there is no fee to roam the beautiful grounds.  (One of my favorite KFDC Tips to impart because it’s one of my favorite places in DC!) Stroll among the many plats, find lovely tucked away places to sit, and enjoy a delightful, relaxing wander around a peaceful place. Hours are limited, but you can make a longer day of it with play time at Montrose Park next door, a hike in Dumbarton Oaks Park right behind the the garden, and/or a bite to eat at one of the many options in Georgetown. This KFDC post about Dumbarton also has some nearby food recs.

Bloom Town: Magnolias
Where: A couple of DC locations
When: Through the warm months
Admission: Mostly free

Saucer magnolias are now blooming, and they’re sensational in some areas! One of the best places to see them is the Enid A. Haupt Garden behind the Smithsonian Castle, and you can plan on museum visits, too. There is also a gorgeous display of  blooming magnolia trees at Indiana Plaza, at the corner of 7th Street, Pennsylvania, and Indiana Ave. — plus, picnic tables with swing seats and nearby places to get a good bite (or bring back to the tables) make it worth the stop.  And for more about upcoming local blooms, see this post — it was created a few years ago, but it’s updated every year to reflect new dates for festivals and any other pertinent info.

Off-the-Mall Museums
Where: Around DC
When: Throughout the weekend
Admission: Varies by museum

Take kids to one of the many great museums for kids off the well trodden path of the National Mall. If you don’t veer from it now and then, you could miss out on some amazing exhibits and experiences that aren’t as well known. Check out this round-up of some places in DC that may not be on your museum radar — but should be.

Five Things: March 8, 2023

A past Spring Break at a Shenandoah area farm

1. Looking for last minute Spring Break ideas?  Some suggestions for easy escapes within a few hours’ drive from DC:  Colonial Williamsburg is a really fun (and educational!) time trip.  Great Wolf Lodge, also in Williamsburg, is currently 30% off when you stay two or more nights Sunday – Thursday.  (You could even combine those two trips!)   Shenandoah also makes for a great family getaway destination — we once enjoyed a fantastic Spring Break stay at this beautiful farm with day trips for recreation around the area (more pics here).

2. There are still some time slots available for virtual hand cut portrait sessions with reknown silhouette artist Karl Johnson!  These make for fantastic Mother’s Day & Father’s Day gifts…or any occasion, for that matter.

3. Support a local school and score some great stuff! Bidding has started for Ross Elementary’s silent auction, and you don’t have to be part of the school to bid on nearly 200 items and experiences. These include an incredible baseball packagea pair of tickets to a New York Fashion Week showa Specialized kid’s biketheater, museum and sports tickets; and dozens of restauranthealth & beauty, and other gift certificates.  (PS:  All are also welcome to attend the in-person Starry Night auction on March 18! Tickets available for purchase here.)

4.  Tea Collection’s swimsuits for kids are so cute!  And right now you can get 20% off with the code SWIMWEAR.

5. That is hypocisy at its highest order.

BONUS:  Happy International Women’s Day!  See the round-up of ways to celebrate — today and beyond!

Reserve Your Seats for a Familiar Fairytale: Beauty and the Beast Playing Now through April 2 at Synetic Theater!

Synetic Theater’s newest production of Beauty and the Beast transforms the classic story into a dark and magical piece of theater art. A far cry from the Disney-fied version of the story, this show takes inspiration from the original 18th-century French fairytale, La Belle et la Bete, adding a unique, dark twist and mysterious, shadowy elements .

If you’ve experienced a Synetic performance, you’re no stranger to the theater’s acclaimed silent storytelling and expressionistic design, which blend together on stage to bring this sparkling Gothic romance to life. The season closer brings an all-star cast to the stage, featuring company members, professionally trained actors and dancers — including Dancing with the Stars contestant, Irina Kavsadze, as the lead role — along with an imaginative creative team to pique your interest and bring you into a magical world built through marvelous shadow-play and skillful stagecraft.

Synetic Theater is DC’s premiere physical theater, producing stunning and vibrant performances that take a step beyond the spoken word and emphasize movement, physicality, and emotion.

Please note: This production of Beauty and the Beast contains light fantasy violence and may be scary to very young children. This production is not the Disney musical.

Synetic Theater Presents Beauty and the Beast
Where: 1800 S. Bell Street | Arlington, VA 22202
When: March 3 – April 2
Run time is approximately 90 minutes with no intermission
All ages are welcome, but parental guidance is advised for younger children.

This post is sponsored by Synetic Theater, however, I only promote events, programs, and places that I truly believe in and/or think would appeal to KFDC readers.
