Five Things for Today: June 8, 2020

The old Capitol columns at the National Arboretum

1. Something that many will be excited about: The National Arboretum reopens today! It will be on a limited basis to start — just Monday, Wednesday and Friday 1-5pm with only 200 cars allowed on the grounds at one time to limit the total number of visitors. Read more about the National Arboretum here and here. (Thanks to the Hill Rag for the heads-up on the reopening!)

2. Local business Happy Little Art Studio is offering “at home art experiences” in a box. They deliver or ship it right to your door. Even more, for every box they sell, a box will be donated — they are connecting with local groups to organize art kit donations for kids in need.

3. What Defund the Police means — and what you can do.

4. Black owned wine businesses.

5. A moving video of peaceful protests around the country.

Five Things for Today: June 7, 2020

My two marching yesterday

1. Today at 2pm, Adventure Theatre presents Black is Beautiful: A Celebration of Arts and Contributions from African-Americans. The virtual event will include readings of family-friendly poetry and stories in its Sunday Storytime, followed by honest discussions about race, racism, how to express yourself, love, bullying, and pain. Tune in on their Facebook event page. (PS: Adventure Theatre is offering Digital Musical Theatre Summer Camp beginning June 16.)

2. A KFDC reader recently requested crowdsourced recommendations for swimming holes and lakes around the area. A Facebook thread was started, and it has a few suggestions, including mine to check out the website SwimmingHoles.org. If you know of any places to add, feel free to do so in the comments below or on that thread.

3. From Cup of Jo, five black voices to follow on IG. I also recommend Sonya Renee Taylor — start with this video.

4. If you’re thinking about getting away this summer, see these CDC considerations for travelers. National Geographic has some good advice. And Afar Magazine discusses when (and whether or not) we should start traveling again.

5. A great WTOP photo gallery of scenes from yesterday’s powerful, peaceful protest in DC. And I shared some of my pics here.

Five Things for Today: June 6, 2020

1. It’s going to be a big protest day in DC. While many demonstrations are expected around the area, it looks like the larger ones will be at the Dirksen Senate Office Building, where Freedom Fighters DC is organizing a peaceful protest starting at 2pm, and Refuse Fascism is planning one at 4pm at Lafayette Square. DCist has more helpful info.

2. If you want to be part of a protest with your kids, but without the massive crowds, at 2pm ParentsTogether, MomsRising, Women’s March, and the Working Families Party are holding a short, powerful family-friendly protest livestream with music, inspiring youth and adult speakers, and opportunities for families to take action together in support of Black Lives. (Note: The event will be family-oriented, and speakers will talk about police violence and the murder of George Floyd, so they encourage parents to use their own judgment about whether very young kids should attend.)

3. For something geared toward young children, Sesame Street is joining CNN at 10am for an hour-long Town Hall to help kids and families discuss racism and the protests taking place nationwide, build empathy, and embrace diversity.

4. If you want to get out of the city for some time outdoors, yesterday’s post has quick links for things to do. Another lovely place that recently reopened is Meadowlark Botanical Garden in Vienna. (KFDC post about it here.)

5. Moments of peace and unity.

Seen on a recent neighborhood walk 🖤

1. Systemic racism explained.

2. We’re heading into the weekend when many of you will be looking for outdoor things to do, so here are quick, hopefully helpful links:
* Local Hikes
* Pick Your Own places
* Annmarie Sculpture Garden grounds are open
* Paddling opportunities – rentals available at Thomson Boat Center and The Wharf, and some NoVa Parks locations
* Saturday’s protest should be a big one.

3. Mom and Dad are Fighting, a parenting podcast from Slate, discusses age-appropriate news sources for kids. (Starts around 18:42.)

4. The Mom Edit, one of my favorite sources for fashion tips (because I’m clueless on my own), just launched a Black-Owned Business Directory.

5. This Twitter thread about Dave Chapelle is a really great read. (Btw, when we can do things like go to live comedy shows again, I highly recommend seeing his if there’s an opportunity.)

The National Museum of African American History & Culture on the National Mall

1. This was shared in Monday’s post, but added late, so I wanted to highlight again… The National Museum of African American History and Culture just launched a new portal called Talking About Race, which is full of resources for discussing, teaching, and learning about race and racism. (Read more about the museum in this KFDC post.)

2. This Pickett’s Charge inspired craft activity from the Hirshhorn looks fun and easy to do. You probably recognize the work from the walls of the museum’s third level. Learn more about it and the artist Mark Bradford, whose work “addresses sociopolitical issues such as race, class, and gender while also engaging art history,” here and more here.

3. How to help protestors in DC. (We saw @freedomfightersdc stations at the Capitol protest yesterday providing water, food, and more supplies to anyone who needed… it was well organized and amazing support for everyone there.) This article on The Cut has more places where donations can be made to help support the struggle against police brutality.

4. DC businesses authorized to reopen in Phase One can pick up a starter PPE package courtesy of Mayor Bowser and Downtown DC BID. Sign up here to participate in the offer and find your pick-zone. — and share this with any business owners reopening now.

5. Why he knelt.
