Yards Park is a great waterfront spot for socially distanced hanging out

1. Join Leesburg Animal Park for a Fishing Derby today from 11am – 3pm. Of course, you can visit the animals, too. The rest of the park is open 10am – 5pm (Wednesday – Sunday), and admission is $15/adult, $13/ages2-12.

2. And for places you can always go fishing in or near DC, here are seven recommendations.

3. Came across this nice round-up of waterfront spaces around DC to enjoy warm weather. It was obviously compiled pre-COVID, so there are some suggestions for activities that are not currently offered, but most of the spots recommended are still good for socially distanced hanging out.

4. From the Washington Post’s On Parenting: 6 strategies for sharing disappointing news with kids, in a year with lots of it.

5. March for Our Lives’ powerful new campaign ad.

Scene from a recent neighborhood walk

1. DC Dog Days, an annual sidewalk sale usually along the 14th & U corridors, has moved online and expanded this year. All weekend, you can shop and support retailers and restaurants all around the city. See which businesses are participating and access their websites to shop and order.

2. There will be all kinds of opportunities for sloppy fun at Mess Fest, an event running today and tomorrow at the Maryland Science Center, which is open again with extra safety measures. Hours at the MSC right now are Thursday – Sunday 10am – 5pm, and this weekend’s event runs 12-4pm both days. If you’re not up for going there, you can enjoy a virtual Mess Fest at home for free. Read more about the Baltimore locale in this KFDC post from past, pre-COVID times.

3. A KFDC reader let me know about a family-friendly place to savor some vino, let the kids run around outside, and enjoy the lovely scenery of Cordova, MD. Triple Creek Winery is open Saturday/Sunday 2-8pm and Thursday/Friday/Monday 4-8pm (Tuesday/Wednesday by appointment only). They have also been hosting drive-in movies and concerts on weekends, so check their events to see when they’re happening!

4. Doom scrolling and how to break the habit.

Five Things for Today: August 7, 2020

Tee up for the weekend!

1. A fun, active, and challenging way to enjoy time outdoors (in nice weather) with the kids: Foot Golf! The soccer-golf combo is played like golf, but instead of using clubs to drive a golf ball down a course and into a small hole, you kick a soccer ball and aim for a 21β€³ hole. And the β€œtee” in FootGolf is about a five-foot space between two orange markers in the grass. Find details through the previous link and read more about where it’s located — there’s even more to do there.

2. What do you think about a mud kitchen for outdoor play?

3. District Cider Co. is a kid (and dog) friendly hard cider brewery with a full taproom and patio seating. They often have a food truck there, too. It’s open Friday 2-6pm, Saturday 12-8pm, and Sunday 2-6pm. And it’s located just two blocks from the main entrance of the National Arboretum (2400 T St NE), so you can make a day of it hanging at the Arb then stopping by for a brew.

4. For those, like me, who think DC could use more good Jewish deli… The Shaw location of All Purpose Pizza is launching Delikatessen, a new Jewish deli pop-up. It will be open Fridays, Saturdays, & Sundays from 10am – 3pm. Order online here.

5. A few days ago I shared a clip of Alanis singing her new song, Ablaze, on Jimmy Fallon… now here’s the official video. So many great things about it, including those walls of books (!), the song itself, and all the wonderful happiness it exudes.

PS: A few go-to posts for your weekend back pocket: The round-up of activities around DC right now, local hikes, and area swim spots.
