Five Things for Today: September 7, 2020

Seen on a recent neighborhood walk

1. Labor Day baseball (and beyond): The Nationals are kicking off a six-game homestand starting today with a two-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays, and a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves September 10-13.  As you’re watching the televised games, you can recreate the ballpark food experience with the Best Ballpark Bites Delivered program, which features classic game day meals delivered right to your door.

2. Washingtonian has a nice round-up of 22 walks near water. And  several that are included have been covered well on KFDC for more about them:  Great Falls Park, Riverbend Park, Scott’s Run Nature Preserve, Roosevelt Island, Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, Georgetown Waterfront Park, River Farm.

3. To support kids and parents during this new season of distance learning, the National Children’s Museum is sharing a curated list of themed STEAM activities for families to engage in together. The Dreamers Digest includes projects, book suggestions, recipes, brain teasers, and more!  Go to their website and sign up for the monthly newsletter full of cool ideas.

Five Things for Today: September 6, 2020

Scene from the National Arboretum, a perfect place to enjoy a beautiful day

Today’s 5 things are sponsored by Adventure Theatre

1.  DC is having spectacular weather this weekend — get out and take advantage!  This round-up of the best places in the DC area to spend a beautiful day outdoors is loaded with inspo for making plans. And the status of most have been updated to reflect any changes with COVID, plus there have been a couple of recent additions.

2. The National Symphony Orchestra’s annual Labor Day Concert at the Capitol isn’t taking place this year — not at that location, anyway.  Instead, the NSO is performing a live stream concert that will be simulcast on a big screen at Park Up DC, the series that has been presenting drive-in movies and other shows at the RFK Stadium parking lot.  The free concert begins at 7pm, and there will be room for 350 cars. Tickets required — use the code NSOLABORDAY to reserve.

3. The Capitol Riverfront BID is kicking off a Drive-In Movie Series later this month. Follow the link to see what’s playing and reserve tickets in advance.

4.  The Mom Edit’s Guide to Labor Day Sales: A Cheat Sheet.

5.  Scents of Pre-COVID: A New Candle Collection 😁😭

Five Things for Today: September 5, 2020

Home for the weekend

Today’s 5 things are sponsored by Adventure Theatre

1.  We’re spending the long weekend at Deep Creek Lake, a wonderful destination for a socially distanced getaway from DC.   With outdoor recreation to enjoy every season, I highly recommend it anytime of the year.  There are lake activities in the summer, hikes/bikes among foliage in the fall, skiing at Wisp in winter, and biking/hiking on the many trails during spring. Read more about it and get a glimpse in this post about a previous Deep Creek trip. And for more easy getaways from DC — even just a few days’ escape is a sanity saver during this crazy time — this post has some ideas for places to go. (PS: We booked our weekend rental, as well as one earlier this summer, through Taylor-Made — they have a great selection of places to stay. Just try to reserve early, as they all book up these days!)

2.  A holiday weekend calls for a special meal.  Brightest Young Things has some good recs for brunch places (and happy hours, too), Eater DC has a  round-up of crab places, and you can go pick your own fruits and veggies to incorpoate into a homemade meal — here are 88 Labor Day recipes.

3.  Outdoor classic family movie night:  Catch a showing of The Goonies at The Bullpen tomorrow evening.  Reserve a socially distanced picnic table for 4-6 people, popcorn is complimentary, and more food and drinks are available for purchase.  Tickets are $15-20, doors open at 7pm. And it’s encouraged to dress up in theme with the movie — you could win prizes!

4. A friend recently told me about Goldbelly, an online marketplace for food from well-known purveyors all around the country (think New York bagels, Maine lobster rolls, and Texas BBQ).  It’s great for gift giving — or if you have a hankering for a fave from a faraway place.

5.  A beautiful and moving read.

Five Things for Today: September 4, 2020

How about kayak adventure over Labor Day weekend?

Today’s 5 things are sponsored by Adventure Theatre

1. In case you haven’t seen it yet,  Ride On: Bike Routes for Everyone Around the DC Area is exactly what the title says. With the forecast for the next few days, it’ll be a perfect time to ride. (And for more activities, hover over the ADVENTURES tab at top of the blog for posts with all kinds of ideas for recreation around the area.)

2.  This Washington Post article has a nice round-up of parks that are perfect for winding down summer.  See more about a few of them in these KFDC posts: Huntley Meadows, Prince William Forest Park, and Scott’s Run Nature Preserve.

3.  There’s a KFDC giveaway going right now, the first in awhile.  Enter to win a private music lesson for your child with the International School of Music!

4.  I’ve been on a films-set-in-Italy kick lately, and just watched two fantastic movies, both from several years’ back and both starring Tilda Swinton:  A Bigger Splash and I am Love.  Also recently rewatched one of my all-time favorites  The Talented Mr. Ripley.  What movies have you enjoyed lately?  (Btw, all of the recs I just mentioned are for adults!)

5. Remember when… (sigh)
