Five Things for Today: August 8, 2020

Scene from a recent neighborhood walk

1. DC Dog Days, an annual sidewalk sale usually along the 14th & U corridors, has moved online and expanded this year. All weekend, you can shop and support retailers and restaurants all around the city. See which businesses are participating and access their websites to shop and order.

2. There will be all kinds of opportunities for sloppy fun at Mess Fest, an event running today and tomorrow at the Maryland Science Center, which is open again with extra safety measures. Hours at the MSC right now are Thursday – Sunday 10am – 5pm, and this weekend’s event runs 12-4pm both days. If you’re not up for going there, you can enjoy a virtual Mess Fest at home for free. Read more about the Baltimore locale in this KFDC post from past, pre-COVID times.

3. A KFDC reader let me know about a family-friendly place to savor some vino, let the kids run around outside, and enjoy the lovely scenery of Cordova, MD. Triple Creek Winery is open Saturday/Sunday 2-8pm and Thursday/Friday/Monday 4-8pm (Tuesday/Wednesday by appointment only). They have also been hosting drive-in movies and concerts on weekends, so check their events to see when they’re happening!

4. Doom scrolling and how to break the habit.

Five Things for Today: August 7, 2020

Tee up for the weekend!

1. A fun, active, and challenging way to enjoy time outdoors (in nice weather) with the kids: Foot Golf! The soccer-golf combo is played like golf, but instead of using clubs to drive a golf ball down a course and into a small hole, you kick a soccer ball and aim for a 21β€³ hole. And the β€œtee” in FootGolf is about a five-foot space between two orange markers in the grass. Find details through the previous link and read more about where it’s located — there’s even more to do there.

2. What do you think about a mud kitchen for outdoor play?

3. District Cider Co. is a kid (and dog) friendly hard cider brewery with a full taproom and patio seating. They often have a food truck there, too. It’s open Friday 2-6pm, Saturday 12-8pm, and Sunday 2-6pm. And it’s located just two blocks from the main entrance of the National Arboretum (2400 T St NE), so you can make a day of it hanging at the Arb then stopping by for a brew.

4. For those, like me, who think DC could use more good Jewish deli… The Shaw location of All Purpose Pizza is launching Delikatessen, a new Jewish deli pop-up. It will be open Fridays, Saturdays, & Sundays from 10am – 3pm. Order online here.

5. A few days ago I shared a clip of Alanis singing her new song, Ablaze, on Jimmy Fallon… now here’s the official video. So many great things about it, including those walls of books (!), the song itself, and all the wonderful happiness it exudes.

PS: A few go-to posts for your weekend back pocket: The round-up of activities around DC right now, local hikes, and area swim spots.

Five Things for Today: August 6, 2020

‘Tis the season — for blackberries!

1. It’s blackberry season at many PYO places around the area. Schlagel Farms, one of the closest to DC, is offering it today from 9am – 1pm. Homestead Farms, Butler’s Orchard, and Hollin Farms also have them. And more fruits and veggies are available at other locales. Get more details in this round-up of area farms with pick your own ops.

2. The Bullpen at Nats Park is partnering with Due South to offer Bottomless Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 11am. It includes your choice of entree with two family-style sides and a choice of bottomless beverage. Tables of 6 or less are available with a two-hour limit. Cost is $55/adult, $20/child Reservations are not required, but are encouraged — email info@thebullpendc.com to reserve. It’s also open for game viewing when the Nats are playing — doors open an hour before games.

3. The newly renovated MLK Library is scheduled to reopen on September 24, and you can get a peek inside here.

4. Serve Your City and the Ward-6 Mutual Aid Network have organized the Back To School Bash to make sure students in the community have the resources they need to be successful as they start the school year. They’ll be helping provide those in need with backpacks that include a digital device, traditional school supplies, personal protective equipment, and some fun activities/surprises to add some back-to-school joy. You can support their efforts by donating, purchasing supplies, or volunteering your time to help assemble backpacks (email ward6mutualaid@gmail.com for this).

5. Songs for social distancing that are so spot on. πŸ˜‚

Five Things for Today: August 5, 2020

The Mary Livingston Ripley Garden between the Smithsonian Castle & the Hirshhorn

1. From 10am – 12pm today, an outdoor installation will be unveiled on the U.S. Capitol grounds that features artwork by kids describing their suffering, anxieties and hopes in the pandemic. It’s being presented by ParentsTogether, an organization of more than two million American parents, as a message to Congress asking for COVID relief. Look for it on the southest side of the Capitol across from the Library of Congress, on the corner of Independence Avenue & First Street SE.

2. The Hirshhorn’s ARTLAB NO LAB is a virtual space presenting weekly art and music challenges, fun discussions, and contests. (It’s the digital version of their pre-COVID ARTLAB program for teens, but anyone can enjoy it now.)

3. The Lily suggests seven books that feel like an escape, perfect for times when you can’t take one of your own.

4. I’ve mentioned it before, but giving another shout out because it’s such a great service: ThredUp is an online secondhand store and an ideal way to shop right now. You can get great deals on all kinds of apparel, including kids’ clothes, at a time when it might feel odd to pay full price; thrifting is good for the environment; and it’s really satisfying when you score those perfect pieces. The link provided is my referral code, which gives you $10 to shop when you place your first order.

5. Live updates on Beirut and a quick link to the Labanese Red Cross for one way to help.

Social distancing indoors at the National Gallery of Art

1. If you’re looking for rainy day activities out of the house, the KFDC round-up of things to do around DC during this time has a whole section of places that offer socially distanced experiences indoors — scroll to the end of the post. (And the rest of the list will come in handy after the wet weather passes!)

2. Pods are the new buzz these days with the changing landscape of school. The Lane Social Club and Flex Academies are embracing it in a great way. They are teaming up to create learning pods throughout the DMV to help families who are struggling without full-time school available this fall. Even better, they have launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for scholarships, so they can help make the pods accessible to all families. Visit their websites linked above to learn more.

3. Watson Adventures has a couple of Wizard School Virtual Scavenger Hunts coming up on August 9 & 22. (We’ve done the IRL version, which is awesome, and also had a great time participating in a virtual Family Trivia Slam with them.) Their hunts often sell out, so sign up for it soon — cost is $19/family.

4. 30+ Black-owned children’s brands that I learned about from my friend Darcy’s 15 Happy Things for August.

5. How sweet is this?
