Creating American Indian-inspired art at imagiNATIONS

Creating American Indian-inspired art at imagiNATIONS

Tuesday – See an amazing collection of model ships, peer into a real periscope, sit in the gun seats of old fighter planes, view naval artifacts hundreds of years old, and much more at the U.S. Navy Museum. Located on the Navy base in southeast DC, it’s a treasure trove of fascinating exhibits. Hours are 9am – 5pm. Admission is free. (I recommend calling ahead to make sure it’s open in the case of inclement weather: 202.433.6826.)

Wednesday – See a show especially for little ones – midweek Tiny Tots are back at The Puppet Co. The lights stay on, and doors remain open during these performances for the youngest audiences. Old McDonald’s Farm is this week’s production. Showtime is 10am. Tickets are $5 for everyone, including babies.

Thursday – In honor of another Polar Vortex coming, go see Titans of the Ice Age 3D playing at the Samuel C. Johnson IMAX Theater in the Natural History Museum. If that doesn’t suit your child’s interests, there are a bunch of other films playing there and at the Air & Space Museum’s Lockheed Martin IMAX Thaeater. Tickets are $9/adult, $7.50/youth. Check schedules for showtimes.

Friday – Discover American Indian culture with all kinds of hands-on pursuits at imagiNATIONS, the family activity center at the National Museum of the American Indian. Weave a big basket, play in a teepee and models of native dwellings, do some arts & crafts, hear bird calls of the wild, read kids books in the library, and much more. Museum hours are 10am – 5:30pm, but imagiNATIONS closes at 5. Admission is free.
