With great fall weather in the forecast and social distancing a priority, you may want to enjoy some adventures outside. The round-up of The Best Places in the DC Area to Enjoy a Beautiful Day Outdoors with the Kids has ideas galore for doing just that.  If you’re looking specifically for family hikes, check out these walks in the woods.

Soul Strolls
Where: Congressional Cemetery | Capitol Hill, DC
When: Friday & Saturday
Admission: $25/adult, $12/child

Trespass into the past and discover the secrets of some of Congressional Cemetery’s “residents.” Soul Strolls, the Cemetery’s annual twilight tours, explore the stories of individuals buried there through guided tours and costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October — in twilight and darkness, happening upon vignettes and individuals under the guidance of one of the “Dozen Decent Docents.” Hour-long tours depart every 15 minutes. Beer, wine, and cider tickets will be for sale on-site to enjoy a drink before your tour, plus there will be  a bar located along the tour route to redeem your drink tickets for a refresher.

Spooktacular Drive-In Flicks
Where: Akridge Lot at Buzzard Point | Capitol Riverfront, DC
When: Friday
Admission: $20/vehicle

Grab your popcorn and join the Capitol Riverfront BID for a drive-in movie at the Akridge Lot (First and V St. SW) in Buzzard Point next to Audi Field.  The movie is a fun, contact-free experience for all ages with space for 75 vehicles set at an appropriate social distance.  Frankenstein & Dracula  is the spooktacular flick being screened this weekend. Proceeds will be donated to DC Central Kitchen.

Drive-In “Spooky” Movie Nights
Where: DC Party Box | Rockville, MD
When: Friday, Saturday, & Sunday
Admission: $15/adult, $10/13 & under

Enjoy Sppoktacular theater at this drive-in, featuring an LED screen, FM broadcasting, and spooky surprises. There are two showings each night, a family-friendly film at 7pm and a classic or scary movie 10pm. This weekend it’s Scoob and Sixth Sense on Friday, Hocus Pocus and The Shining on Saturday, and The Addams Family and Nightmare on Elm Street on Sunday. Reserve in advance online, one reservation per car.

More Wicked Fun

Art Safari

An Alexandria tradition for 25 years, Art Safari is moving online in 2020. On Saturday, professional artists will lead a series of creative hands-on projects via Facebook Live with sessions running 11am – 4pm. Other recorded sessions will be posted throughout the day via Facebook videos and will be archived on the Torpedo Factory website for later viewing.

To wrap up this unprecedented year, ARTECHOUSE has transformed their gallery into a blue-hued haven intended to evoke calm and peace during a turbulent time. Submerge in the sights, sounds, and sensations and discover creative curiosities as you interact with the digital art.

The Great Pumpkin Experience

Pumpkin spice things up with festive, fall fun! Watch local artist, Natalie Rogers, create custom painted pumpkins and have an opportunity to support R.E.A.D. and the Jennifer Bush-Lawson Foundation. Capture memorable photo ops with larger than life, hand-painted pumpkins and take home a DIY pumpkin painting kit with a qualifying purchase of $75, while supplies last.

Celebrate the season at an area festival. From pumpkin patches and apple picking to corn mazes and hayrides, there are still traditional activities to enjoy in safe ways. This post has details on where all the fall fun is happening.

Farm festivals may be the go-to autumn outing, but there are lots of other fantastic ways to enjoy the season around the area. This KFDC post lists a bunch of great places for fall adventures.

Kids Euro Festival

International travel may not be possible right now, but you can still enjoy European adventures. The annual Kids Euro Festival is going digital this year, offering families all over the world access to an extended virtual festival with a full 6 weeks of online programming — all of it free. From October 17 – November 29, tune in for performances, concerts, workshops, movies, storytelling, puppetry, dance, and more.  Create your own Finland with Minecraft, do some pumpkin carving with Cypress, bake baguettes with France, and see what other Euro activities are available.

Fun at Fairfax Parks
Where: Parks around Fairfax County, VA

The Fairfax County Park Authority hosts all kinds of events on weekends for guests of all ages. Volunteer with kids age 12 and up for a watershed clean-up at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park. Pick, learn about, and decorate pumpkins at Sully Historic Site. Check out a woodcarving demonstration at Colvin Run Mill. Monuments: Creative Forces
Where: Strathmore | Bethesda, MD

This unique outdoor art installation throughout Strathmore’s 16 acres sounds like an ideal exhibition for COVID times, being in fresh air with a lot of space.  Monuments: Creative Forces by Australian artist Craig Walsh features moving, dimensional video portraits of artists whose work and artistic endeavors are changing the shape of our community in profound ways. The expansive portraits of these creative heroes were chosen by a diverse panel of community and arts leaders  are projected on to towering trees, transforming them into animated sculptural monuments.

It doesn’t have to be summer to enjoy some recreation on the water. In fact, paddling our local rivers and lakes is a great way to do some leaf peeping and have some active fun. Boating in DC is still offering rentals as are a couple of other area places. Find details for them all here.

There are some great ways to enjoy getting out with out being outside.  A lot of indoor places have reopened with extra precautions to ensure safety during COVID. This post has details on where you can hang out inside, and this one has suggestions especially for little kids.

N Street Village SHERO Walk

Join this annual walk, taking place virtually this year, to benefit N Street Village, the city’s largest provider of housing and services for women experiencing homelessness. Also, checkout their toolkit for families and kids to help discuss issues like poverty, food insecurity, and homelessness.

Five Things for Today: October 15, 2020

Immerse in blue at ARTECHOUSE

 

1.  A new digital art exhibit opens at ARTECHOUSE today!  Crystalline is a dazzling blue-hued immersive experience. Tickets are $12/child, $19/adult online ($17/child, $24 at door).  Read about their COVD policies here. And look for a full KFDC review soon!

 

2. Get ready for Halloween virtually with the Spy Museum this evening.  Spies in Disguise: Halloween Edition will help recruits (recommended for ages 8-13) and their handlers take their transformation to the next level by learning the top secret tradecraft used by spies on undercover missions.  Join the program from 5:30-6:30pm.  Admission is $20/family.

 

3. Five Things for Today: October 14, 2020

On the trail at Riverbend Park

 

1. Another lovely fall day, and another rec for enjoying it:  Hike along the Potomac from Riverbend Park to Great Falls.  It’s a fun two-mile walk (each way) in the woods that little trampers can tackle, plus the magnificent vistas of the gushing falls are a great reward before you turn around to hike back.  You could also just explore the area around Riverbend and enjoy the nature and views there.  Riverbend Park hours are 7am – dark, though the Visitor Center is closed right now.  Admission is free.

 

2. The Phillips Collection reopens tomorrow, October 15!  New safety guidelines will be in place along with new hours — Thursday – Sunday, 11am – 6pm.  Timed tickets are required, and only six tickets are available every 15 minutes.  Reserve them in advance here.  And for more about the Dupont Circle art museum see this KFDC post and this one.

 

3. Have you checked out the Kennedy Center’s Small Works Project with Mo Willems?  The series highlights the stories of people who effect change by helping in small ways — and it’s paired with an artwork by Willems. They are sharing  a new story for 50 weekdays and will be up to 38 today.  And if you have a Small Works Story to share, you can submit it here.

 

4. DC United fans, you can support the team from inside Audi Field and help fight childhood cancer through the Fan Cutout Program. For $50, have an image of your choice made into a fan cutout that will be placed in Audi Field sections 123 – 131 for the remainder of the 2020 season.  Part of the proceeds goes to Children’s National to help #KickChildhoodCancer.

Five Things for Today: October 13, 2020

Exploring Kingman Island by bike

 

1. It looks like the rain is done for now, and we’ve got a few beautiful days ahead!  The KFDC round-up of the best places around the area to hang outdoors is loaded with ideas for enjoying them.  A specific rec:  Visit Kingman Island in Northeast DC.  There are wooden bridges to cross over the Anacostia, easy trails to hike or bike, wildlife to spy, and tables where you can enjoy a picnic.  For even more activity,  head to the playground at RFK Fields located right next to the parking lot.  Admission to both the park and playground are free.

 

2. Ford’s Theatre reopens tomorrow, October 14.   The historic site of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination is a fascinating place to visit — read about touring it in this KFDC postAdvance tickets are required, and they will be available online starting today at 10am for admission October 14-18. Read about their safety procedures and protocols in response to COVID.

Five Things for Today: October 12, 2020

Celebrate Indigenous People’s Day online today or at the American Indian Museum later this week

 

1. Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! The National Museum of the American Indian is closed on Mondays, but Smithsonian Magazine offers five ways to celebrate, including an online celebration with the museum at 1pm.  (PS:  I highly recommend a visit to the NMAI…  The imagiNATIONS activity center is sadly closed due to COVID, but the exhibits open now are quite powerful and interesting, especially Americans, which highlights the ways American Indians have been part of the nation’s identity since before the country began. Reserve timed entry passes here.)

 

2. The Lane in Ivy City is offering classes for kids ages 18 months – 7 years this fall.  Ballet, gymnastics, and art programs will be available.  All COVID protocols will be followed, including temperature screenings at the door, small class sizes, frequent hand washing, and required masks for participants and instructors. 3. DC Department of Parks and Recreation is moving into a new phase of reopening this week with some indoor pools, fitness centers, and programs for youth and adults becoming available.  To swim or work out, you must make a reservation.  And for in-person programs, see what is being offered and register here.

 

4. Amazon Prime Day is tomorrow, but some deals are already available.
