Five Things: May 28, 2025

1. A great place for a family hang at an awesome riverside location:  Catboat Pizza Bar on Daingerfield Island, right off the GW Parkway in Alexandria.  The family- and dog-friendly spot just opened for the season this past weekend, its second summer operating in the restaurant space at the Washington Sailing Marina.  The menu is small but easy with pizza (cheese, pepperoni, and mushroom), an Italian sandwich, Caesar salad, popcorn, and ice cream to eat, plus soft drinks, beer and wine, and their signature slushies to drink. There’s a deck with tables, both covered areas and open, as well a few picnic tables.  Or you can spread out on the grass next to the Potomac (BYO blankets and lawn chairs).   We went for the first time on Memorial Day, and really enjoyed it. The pizza was tasty, the drinks good, the vibe laid-back and fun… I highly recommend!  Hours are Thursday-Friday, 3-9pm and Saturday-Sunday, 12-9pm.

2. The Hirshhorn is hosting its annual Sound Scene this weekend, May 31 – June 1.  The interactive sound and multi-sensory arts festival is a celebration of sonic and sensory arts.  There will be live performances, interactive installations, and activities for all ages.  Hours are 10am – 5pm both days.  Admission is free, but registration is encouraged.

3. I finally shared details about the third and last part of our vacation in Europe last summer.  If you want to read about a charming town on the French Riviera  (that I think would make for a great destination with younger kids, too), go check out the post here.

4. The weather this week reminds me that raincoats are sometimes still needed in summer. Here are a few light ones for kids that are good for the season:  A supercute cherry print; both solids and prints from a good brand for kids’ gear; long and translucent (and a great price); a clear poncho perfect if camp T’s or other wear needs to be visible.
