Five Things: March 18, 2025

1. A few places around the area are starting to show their pink! We’ve seen some early bloomers at the National Arboretum and Congressional Cemetery over the last few days, and there will likely be more cherry blossoms at both spots by this weekend (and even more beyond) — so you can get a little flower fix while you’re waiting for peak bloom at the Tidal Basin.  You can also prepare for it with Tips for Families Viewing the Cherry Blossoms and the just posted round-up of The Best Events & Activities for Families During Cherry Blossom Season.

2. There are even more big blooms to enjoy around DC, including a favorite that will be at its best in about a week…  Magnolias will be brightening up several spots around DC very soon (in fact, a few trees have already begun blooming at the National Arboretum). Bloom Town: Where and When to See the Best Flower Displays Around DC has more details about all of the big blooms on the way.

3. Any Indiana Jones wannabes out there? The Young Archaeologists’ Club offers opportunities for youth interested in archaeology to work with professional archaeologists and explore STEM-related topics through hands-on activities, games, and crafts.  The program is designed for middle-school-aged students, and one-day sessions start on March 29 and go through August at different locations throughout Washington, DC, and virtually. Participants can choose which days, locations, and topics work best for them. Families who are interested can read more about the schedule and register on Archaeology in the Community’s website. Spots are limited!

4. I just started listening to this, a super funny and sweet collection of essays.  I recommend the audio version — it’s read by the author and makes it feel more personal.

5. I’m sure everyone has seen this, but it’s fun to watch again.  (And it reaffirms my love for DC).
