Tag Archives: What to to in DC this Weekend

Five Things for Today: September 20, 2020

1. Today at 2pm, catch some live entertainment outdoors at the National Sylan Theater on the southeast grounds of the Washington Monument on the National Mall. The Insurrection + Resurrection Service Circus presents a bright, raucous melee of short acts governed by a brass band, addressing the heart of the current moment using diverse puppetry styles and spanning many moods, from slapstick to the sublime.  Bring your own blankets, chairs, food, drink, etc. for the 90-minute performance featuring music, puppetry, dance and theatrical narratives. Masks and physical distancing are required.

2.  Through September 27, celebrate the flavors of African-American, African, and Caribbean cuisine during the inaugural Washington DC Black Restaurant Week. Dine at one of the participating restaurants or eateries offering a special menu — see which places are participating here.

3.  Lovely ideas for gifts that don’t cost anything.

4. The Emmy Awards air tonight, and they should be interesting, both because they are virtual for the first time, and because most of us have probably been watching more TV than every this year.  It’ll be broadcast on ABC at 8pm.  (PS: There’s still time to vote in the Pandemmy Awards! 😉)

5. A model for working moms 💜

Bonus:  Quick links for activities to enjoy the lovely day: What’s Open Now, Fall Festivals, Local Hikes, Bike Rides, Peaceful Places, Pick-Your-Own, Paddling Ops, and Best Outdoors.

Five Things for Today: September 18, 2020

Hibiscus to wind down summer on the Capitol grounds

1. In case you missed it earlier this week, there’s a new round-up of fall festivals happening around the area this season — and some have already started.  For more inspiration for weekend fun, hover over the ADVENTURES tab at the top of the blog for a drop down of all kinds of fun local activities. (And don’t forget, a few Smithsonian museums open today!)

2. Take a little time trip this weekend at Mount Vernon’s Colonial Market & Fair. The annual event recreating life in 18th-century America at George Washington’s old estate.  Chat with colonial artisans as you watch them demo period crafting techniques (you can buy them, too), listen to live music from the colonial era, tour the estate grounds, meet General Washington, and more.  It’s running Saturday and Sunday 9am – 5pm,. Admission is $18-20/adult, $10/age 6-11, free/5 & under.

3. A panic free guide to celebrating Rosh Hashanah during the pandemic. L’Shana Tova!

4.  We’re looking forward to watching this documentary with the kids.  And to viewing season 2 of Pen15 without them!

5. Haha… yep.
