The Weekend Round-Up: August 11-13

Gratuitous vacation shot… but read below for great places to paddle in DC!



We may not be in DC, but not to worry — I wouldn’t leave you hanging without recs for weekend fun! However, I think this is a popular time for vacation, because there are less special events than usual. Luckily, there are always fantastic mainstay activities going on to keep the whole gang entertained and having fun. Happy Weekend!

All’s Fair
Where: Montgomery, Prince William, & Howard Counties | MD & VA

County fair season continues as Montgomery and Prince William kick off their annual fests that are chock full of amusement for everyone in the fam. Carnival rides and games, farm animals, live entertainment, pony rides, the junk food gamut, pig races, and so much more. You can also find it in Howard County, where the fair is on for its final couple of days. This post has the scoop on all of the county fun.

Summer Fun

The summer break from school may be starting to wind down, but summer fun around the area continues. Catch a concert outdoors to start the weekend on a musical note — Jazz in the Garden on the National Mall and the Friday Night Concert series at Yards Park are local faves. Keep the seasonal pursuits going with a variety of options: Head to a farm for peach picking. Enjoy some water fun, either at an outdoor pool or a spray park. Feast on crabs. Take advantage of free admission for kids at the Newseum or see seasonal exhibit like Wings of Fancy at Brookside Gardens, Fairy Houses at Annmarie Garden, or HIVE at the Building Museum. 90’s Night with the Nats
Where: Nationals Park | Capitol Riverfront, DC

Enjoy a ballgame and let the kids get a taste of what life was like a good decade (or more) before them. It’s all about the 90’s at Nationals Park at the Friday evening game against the Giants. There will be 90’s music, a 90’s inspired food menu, performances by Uncle Jesse and 90’s cover band White Ford Bronco, and the Racing Presients will be decked out in gear from the decade, too. Of course, there are also games on Saturday and Sunday with special promos and fun for families.

The Ultimate Breeze
Where: Gallaudet University | Northeast, DC
When: Friday, 7pm
Admission: $12 online; $14 at the gate; kids 12 & under free

Catch the DC Breeze in the playoffs! DC’s pro ultimate Frisbee team finished 2nd in the American Ultimate Disc League East Division this season, earning them a home playoff game with the winner moving on to the division title game in Toronto. The Breeze take on the Montreal Royal at Gallaudet on Friday. The night will be filled with intense athletic competition, a lively and family-friendly atmosphere, inexpensive food, a $1k Frisbee toss for a lucky fan, and a chance to experience the up and coming sport of professional Ultimate right here in the heart of DC.

High Wheelin’
Where: Frederick, MD
When: Saturday, 1-5pm
Admission: Free

Get a curbside seat to America’s only high wheel race in historic downtown Frederick, MD. The National Clustered Spires High Wheel Race is a unique event that celebrates the history of bikes with an antique bike display and more festivities throughout the day at the Best Fest — live music, face painting, bouncy fun, beer garden, and more.

World’s Fair Fun
Where: DAR Museum | Downtown, DC
When: Saturday, 10am – 3pm

Experience the excitement, innovation, and wonder of a c.1900 World’s Fair. Do you know what foods debuted at the Columbian Exposition? Or what games children played? Learn about the inventions that thrilled fairgoers and sample the popular foods. Celebrate cultures around the world by exploring the booths of local embassies and cultural centers. Fun for children and adults alike!

Room for Children
Where: House of Sweden | Georgetown, DC
When: Saturday & Sunday, 12-5pm
Admission: Free

Visit the space for family fun at the Swedish Embassy on Georgetown’s waterfront. This library and arts studio for the young is designed to stimulate children’s interest in books, music, storytelling, and self-expression. Room for Children pushes the boundaries of what a library can be. Parents are encouraged to engage in it all with kids and share the experience! It’s open on weekends through December, and every Saturday, there is a storytime session at 2pm.

Step Afrika Camp Show
Where: National Building Museum | Judiciary Square, DC
When: Sunday, 2pm
Admission Free

Step Afrika! recently launched its new season with the 11th annual Summer Steps with Step Afrika! camp. During the past week campers participated in intensive stepping classes, created choreography and costumes, learned about college and life skills, and had incredible amounts of FUN! Now you can see it all come together at a special show this weekend: Join all 131 Summer Steps with Step Afrika! campers for a high energy culminating performance at the Building Museum on Sunday. (While you’re there, plan to tour HIVE and the rest of the museum’s exhibits!)

Full STEAM Ahead: Gears in Motion
Where: Ann Marine Sculpture Garden | Solomons, MD
When: Sunday, 1-4pm
Admission: Free

Families are invited to this free program designed for preschool children and their caretakers! Visit the artLAB at Annmarie Garden for hands-on investigations and challenges that will help children explore, observe, ask questions, and make predictions about the world around them as they create and play! Investigate a variety of concepts in STEAM — science, technology, engineering, art, and math! These fun and imaginative sessions will get your child excited about learning. Perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. And make time before or after to explore the rest of the wonderful Annmarie grounds!

Go with the Flow

When: Throughout the weekend
Admission: Varies by boathouse

Enjoy the weekend on the water, where you can paddle and explore. A bunch of places around the area rent kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards, rowboats, and pontoons. Fletcher’s Boathouse is a popular place to go, and you can also paddle from nearby Thompson Boathouse and Ballpark Boathouse next to Yards Park. Bladensburg Waterfront Park also has vessels for rent along with free pontoon boat tours on weekends from 5-5:45. If you’re up for a bigger excursion, you can rent your own pontoon at Solomons Island. And you can see where else you can explore by water in this round-up of great places to go with the flow.

Fun at Fairfax Parks
Where: Parks throughout Fairfax County, VA

Admission: Varies by activity

The Fairfax County Park Authority hosts all kinds of events on weekends for guests of all ages. Join a pop-up museum at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park. Go on a wagon ride scavenger hunt at Riverbend. Or take older kids to an astronomy session at Huntley Meadows or Turner Farm. Details and registration for these and more activities this weekend and beyond are available here.

Maryland Tax-free Week
Where: Throughout MD
When: Sunday and through the week
Admission: Free, but be prepared to spend (& save!)

Get some back to school shopping done starting on Sunday. Through next Saturday, it’s Tax-Free Week in Maryland. All qualifying apparel and footwear $100 or less, per item, are exempt from the state sales tax. And this year, the first $40 of a backpack or bookbag purchase is also tax-free. Accessory items, except for backpacks, are not included.

Think Outside

From the looks of the forecast, this weekend if going to be perfect for outdoor adventures. And there are tons of options around the DC-Metro to have fun al fresco. Take a hike, go to a beach, hit a playground, explore a historical site, visit animals, or see what else there is to do under the blue skies in this post with tons of ideas for outdoor fun. * Start working on your Elizabethan accent. The most wonderful time of the year REN FEST, begins in just two weeks. Huzzah!
* For a fun, unique indoor activity with the kids, a grown-up day or evening out, or an off-the-beaten-path place to take out of town guests: The Mansion on O Street.
* The Library of Congress National Book Festival is coming up on September 2, and once again there is a stellar line-up of authors presenting!
* CityDance is hosting Open Houses at their DC and Maryland locations on August 26, so you can sample their classes s you plan for fall activities.
* Stowe, Vermont is a fantastic destination for a family summer vacation, especially if you love outdoor adventure.
