Where to Play on the Weekdays: May 9-13

Jammin' at the Arboretum

Jammin’ at the Arboretum

Monday – Spend some time outdoors at the National Arboretum. Go for nature walks through the woods, visit the Washington Youth Garden, romp in open green spaces and at the old Capitol columns…so many ways to enjoy one of the loveliest places in the city. Hours are 8am – 5pm, and admission is free.

Tuesday – Make your way up to Baltimore to visit the Maryland Science Center to explore a variety of neat hands-on exhibits, play in the Kids Room, build in the new Science & Main area, and so much more. Hours are 10am – 5pm. Admission is $20.95/adults, $16.95/ages 3+, free for 2 and under. (I suggest checking out their membership options — if your family of 4 goes just twice in a year, it’s worth it. Plus, there’s reciprocity with other museums around the country.)

Wednesday – Join a brand new series for parents and little ones at Cathedral Commons. The mixed-use development on Wisconsin Avenue is launching Mornings with Mommy & Daddies, Too!, a free interactive program for children of all ages on the second Wednesday of each month. At this first session with a “Music in Motion” theme, experience songs, dances, finger-plays, stories, instrument play, creative movement, puppetry, and more from 10-11am. Then from 11am – 12pm, create puppet crafts and enjoy sweet treats after the show. Meet at Newark Street and Wisconsin Avenue (in front of Giant Food). Admission is free.

Thursday – Let little ones jump the morning away during Toddler Time at SkyZone. The trampoline park has locations in Columbia, Gaithersburg, and Manassas, and they all offer the special sessions for ages 5 and under from 9:30-11am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Admission is $5.

Friday – Join the National Portrait Gallery for some creative fun at an Open Studio Friday session. All ages are welcome to explore a different art medium each week with all kinds of neat projects. Drop in anytime from 1-6pm. Go earlier or stay after to explore the museum’s collections, too! Museum hours are 11:30am – 7pm. Admission is free.
