Where to Play on the Weekdays: July 18-22

The weather factors greatly into this week’s suggested recreation.  With temps in the mid-90’s and 100+ by the end of the week, most of these activities take place indoors. But if you want to savor the sunshine, this list will give you ideas on what to do.  Just be sure to wear a hat and sunscreen when you get out there.

Here’s what’s happening this week, July 18-22:

Monday –  Check out the new Playseum on Capitol Hill.  Open for less than a week, the play space includes two floors of cute, themed rooms for pretend play, opportunities for arts & crafts and cupcake decorating, and lots of books for sale.  Admission is $6/person. For evening fun, it’s Washington Kastles Family Night, which will include extra kids activities along with the matches against Sacramento Capitals.  Get a discount on tickets with the code KIDDC – more details here.

Tuesday – Join a play date at Rockville Town Square.  Their Mommy & Me and Daddies Too series takes place the third Tuesday of every month from 10am – 12pm.  Register here for the free program.

Wednesday – See Imagination Stage’s latest production, The Wind in the Willows.  Tickets ($10-22) are available for both the 10:30am and 1:30pm shows, and you can get a 25% discount by using the code “Willows25”.  Read DC Theater Scene’s review of the play.

Thursday – Boogie down at Eastern Market! John Henry, the Guitar Playing Man is on the line-up for this week’s Boogie Babes show.  The fun starts at 10:30am.  Admission is $5/child, free for siblings 6 months and under.

Friday – The National Museum of Natural History is always a great place to stay cool.  The dinos, insects, butterflies, and mammals are popular permanent exhibits, and I also recommend the Nature’s Best Photography exhibit, which captures some incredible moments from the natural world. You can also watch an IMAX movie at the museum’s Johnson Theater.  Born to Be Wild 3D and Grand Canyon Adventure are two of several films currently playing.

Game Time

The World Cup is over.  Now what??

If you and the kids need a soccer fix to help with the withdrawal or are ready to move onto another game altogether, there are some great pro sports events happening this weekend.  Here’s some action to get your team cheering again.

Washington Capitals Fan Fest
It may not be hockey season, but you can celebrate the Caps this Saturday, July 17, at the Summer 2010 Fan Fest. The free event will take place at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington and will include an autograph session with Brooks Laich and future Caps players, inflatable games and face painting, a scrimmage match, equipment sales, and open skate time. The public is invited, but season ticket holders will get first crack at the equipment. The festivities begin at 8am and run through 2:30pm. See the Washington Capitals website to RSVP and view the complete schedule of events.

Washington Mystics vs. Chicago Sky
If you thought the basketball season ended with the Laker’s championship win, think again. Our city’s WNBA team is in the midst of a pretty good season with a winning record and the 2nd place spot in the Eastern Conference so far. Sunday’s 4pm game will be their third meeting against Chicago, and since the teams split the first two games, this one should be exciting. Tickets start at $10 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster.

Washington Kastles vs. Boston Lobsters – Family Night
With the lull between Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, this is a great way to keep the tennis enthusiasm alive. For the full scoop on the Washington Kastles, see this post from a few weeks ago. The Sunday, July 18, match against the Lobsters (no offense to Boston, but I think we should win on the team name alone), is also a Family Night. Along with some exciting tennis, there will be moon bouncing, face painting, and other USTA-sponsored events for kids. Purchase individual tickets through Ticketmaster, prices start at $15.

DC United vs. LA Galaxy
If you are really jonesing for some soccer, you can catch a DC United game tomorrow, July 15, against the Seattle Sounders. But if you can hang in there until the weekend, you can take advantage of Volkswagen’s 2-Game Test Drive and get a 25% discount on two soccer matches—the first against the LA Galaxy this Sunday, July 18, and the second against FC Dallas on August 14. This weekend’s game begins at 7:30pm, and the first 5,0000 fans to arrive will receive free T-shirts on top of a great night of soccer. Test Drive tickets start at $38 and can be purchased through the DC United website.
