Act Now: Registration is Open for Adventure Theatre Summer Camp!

I just mentioned a few days ago that sign-up for summer camps around the DC area has begun. And I’m highlighting another one that both of my kids have enjoyed over the years: Adventure Theatre!

The popular Glen Echo theater that brings us wonderful family entertainment with plays and musicals especially for younger audiences also offers camps and classes all year round, including summer programs for school-aged kids in 1st to 12th grades.

Musical Theatre Camp: Grades 1-6

This program is a fantastic opportunity for kids entering grades 1–6 to experience musical theatre in a fun, full-day camp. During the two-week sessions, they work alongside accomplished DC-area theater professionals and teaching artists during daily rehearsals in dancing, singing, and acting. With props and costumes, singing and scene-work, sessions culminate in a performance of a full-scale show for family and friends. And this is all with one of the best children’s theatres around! Five two-week sessions are offered at Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo Park from June 18 – August 24. And there will be two sessions at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in DC, July 2-13 and July 16-July 27. Cost of tuition includes a ticket to see Tinker Bell at Adventure Theatre MTC, June 22 – August 19 in Glen Echo Park.

Summer Musical Theatre Training: Grades 6-12

This three-week program is committed to the development of the next generation of performers by providing focused instruction in an intensive and immersive musical theater environment. Offered to kids in middle and high school, each student is placed into a company based on factors that include ability, age, and experience. Companies train together in technique-specific classes and work collaboratively during the rehearsal process on assigned musical numbers, vignettes, and scenes to be presented on the last day of the session for family and friends.

The first session lasts for three weeks and includes a trip to New York City to see Once on This Island (show subject to change) and take a master class with Broadway Performers who will be appearing in that same show on July 3, 2018. The second session will split training the day with rehearsal and will put on a production of Les Miserables Student Edition at the end of the four weeks on the Adventure Theatre stage in Glen Echo Park. Performances will be the weekend August 11-12.

On a personal note, I can’t say enough how much we’ve enjoyed this camp over the years. Owen started the trend for our family, participating in the two-week sessions for several summers. Sasha began carrying on the tradition a couple of years ago and loves it. I adore the program, too. It offers a great foundation for kids interested in the performing arts. They learn an incredible amount about acting and the inner workings of the theatre. And the production at the end is such a treat for us parents to see just how much they get out of the camp, from their knowledge about the production process to confidence being on stage to having a blast with friends, old and new.
