Act Now: Registration is Open for Adventure Theatre Summer Camp!

I just mentioned a few days ago that sign-up for summer camps around the DC area has begun. And I’m highlighting another one that both of my kids have enjoyed over the years: Adventure Theatre!

The popular Glen Echo theater that brings us wonderful family entertainment with plays and musicals especially for younger audiences also offers camps and classes all year round, including summer programs for school-aged kids in 1st to 12th grades.

Musical Theatre Camp: Grades 1-6

This program is a fantastic opportunity for kids entering grades 1–6 to experience musical theatre in a fun, full-day camp. During the two-week sessions, they work alongside accomplished DC-area theater professionals and teaching artists during daily rehearsals in dancing, singing, and acting. With props and costumes, singing and scene-work, sessions culminate in a performance of a full-scale show for family and friends. And this is all with one of the best children’s theatres around! Five two-week sessions are offered at Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo Park from June 18 – August 24. And there will be two sessions at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in DC, July 2-13 and July 16-July 27. Cost of tuition includes a ticket to see Tinker Bell at Adventure Theatre MTC, June 22 – August 19 in Glen Echo Park.

Summer Musical Theatre Training: Grades 6-12

This three-week program is committed to the development of the next generation of performers by providing focused instruction in an intensive and immersive musical theater environment. Offered to kids in middle and high school, each student is placed into a company based on factors that include ability, age, and experience. Companies train together in technique-specific classes and work collaboratively during the rehearsal process on assigned musical numbers, vignettes, and scenes to be presented on the last day of the session for family and friends.

The first session lasts for three weeks and includes a trip to New York City to see Once on This Island (show subject to change) and take a master class with Broadway Performers who will be appearing in that same show on July 3, 2018. The second session will split training the day with rehearsal and will put on a production of Les Miserables Student Edition at the end of the four weeks on the Adventure Theatre stage in Glen Echo Park. Performances will be the weekend August 11-12.

On a personal note, I can’t say enough how much we’ve enjoyed this camp over the years. Owen started the trend for our family, participating in the two-week sessions for several summers. Sasha began carrying on the tradition a couple of years ago and loves it. I adore the program, too. It offers a great foundation for kids interested in the performing arts. They learn an incredible amount about acting and the inner workings of the theatre. And the production at the end is such a treat for us parents to see just how much they get out of the camp, from their knowledge about the production process to confidence being on stage to having a blast with friends, old and new.

There are so many options for summer camps in the DC area, and my kids have been to a variety of them over the years. But there’s one that consistently has been a part of our summer: Adventure Theatre’s acting camp.

The program is a fantastic opportunity for kids going into grades 1 – 6 to experience musical theatre in a fun, full-day camp. They work alongside accomplished DC-area theater professionals and teaching artists during daily rehearsals in dancing, singing, and acting. With props and costumes, singing and scene-work, sessions culminate in a performance of a full-scale show for family and friends. And this is all with one of the best children’s theatres around!

Owen started our family trend with the camp, participating in the two-week sessions for several summers. Sasha began carrying on the tradition last year and loved it so much she’s signed up again. I truly adore the program, too. The kids really learn an incredible amount about acting and the inner workings of the theatre, and the production at the end is such a treat. It’s so impressive to see just how much they get out of classes, and knowing how much fun they have in the process makes it even better.

Adventure Theatre Summer Camp is held at both Glen Echo Park and in the District at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H Street NE. All sessions run for two weeks everyday from 9am – 4pm with before and after care available.

Kids Can Program Their Way to Fun at Generation Code Summer Camps

white-on-red-stacked

Does your child have an interest in computer programming? Are you looking for a summer activity that is engaging, educational, and a lot of fun?

Generation Code summer camps are immersive programming bootcamps that take an innovative approach to teaching computer science. Your child can advance his or her coding skills rapidly — and without sacrificing the fun of summer! In just one to three short weeks, campers can create something amazing as they work closely with experts and their peers. They’ll make new friends, gain valuable skills, and most importantly, have a great time.

Each Generation Code camp is hands-on, collaborative, and creative as it helps build kids’ coding skills quickly. The offerings this summer range from animation and robotics to game design to Android app development. Campers learn crucial coding skills and in-demand languages, like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Java while building their critical thinking and collaborative skills. Every day of camp, students learn from each other and express their creativity through code.

The Generation Code Difference

Fast Skills: With expert instructors as guides, your child or teen can complete full levels of the curriculum in just one to three weeks. The immersive program helps kids develop skills rapidly, increasing retention of everything they’ve learned.

Hands-On: Whether enjoying on- or off-screen activities, Generation Code campers are constantly building and creating, working on shareable projects like websites, animations, games, and robots.

Collaborative: Peers are great teachers. Campers learn from each other while developing their social and team-building skills. They collaborate on both short-term and long-term projects, and engage in paired-programming and mini-activities during each lesson.

Creative: Coding is a form of expression. It’s creative and strategic, and the camps offer students the benefits of choosing their own coding adventure in a structured, effective environment. The more campers explore, the more self-confidence they gain along with the ability to innovate and lead.
