Five Things: January 28, 2025

Scene from a past Auto Show… that little girl is about to be a real driver now!

1. The annual Washington DC Auto Show cruises into town this Friday, January 30, and will run at the Washington Convention Center through February 2.  Every year, I reiterate that if there’s any “grown-up” event that is equally fun for all ages, this is it. Literally hundreds of vehicles are on display for guests to check out.  Plus, there are more experiences like Ride ‘n Drives that let you test-drive cars, WowWheelz go cart-style driving for kids, a STEAM-powered mobile classroom with cool demos, racing simulators, bouncy fun for little ones, exotic and classic car displays, a Subaru Love Pets area with dogs from local animal shelters, and more. Get a glimpse and an idea of what to expect in KFDC posts about it here and here — they’re both from awhile back, but the event is still very much the same.

2. Groupon has an amazing deal right now on membership for the Maryland Science Center, just $99 for the Adventurer Family Membership for four people.  When you consider that tickets for a one-day visit are $29.95, it’s kind of a no-brainer. Plus, MSC is part of the Association of Science/Technology Centers’ Passport Program, so you get reciprocal admission to loads of museums in other cities.  The attraction in downtown Baltimore is easily a multiple-visits kind of place — it’s full of cool exhibits, hands-on activities, play spaces, and more that are all about science and engage kids in fun and fascinating ways.  Read more about it in this KFDC post from when my kids were little and this more recent post from contributor Emily.

3. The weather is finally starting to warm up (it’s not face-numbing cold, anyway).  Hence, I’m sharing the KFDC round-up of hikes around the area. Hitting the trail is always a great, simple way to enjoy the outdoors along with some family QT.

4. Do you know about the app Too Good To Go?  It offers discounts on food from eateries and stores that have a surplus at the close of business, helping you save money and reducing food waste.  You can see which places have leftovers from the day and what time they’ll be ready for pick-up — some give you details, but most are “surprise bags” — then reserve what you want, pay through the app, and pick up at the designated time.  It’s a win all around!

5. Did you just open a clean dishwasher? (lol)

Five Things: January 21, 2025

1. This coming weekend, January 25-26, the National Museum of Asian Art is hosting an Art & Me program geared especially toward kids.  Family Workshop: The Peacock Room invites guests to take a guided tour of the famous Peacock Room, which contains many precious art pieces, then learn how Smithsonian conservators handle large-scale works of art as they have fun creating and moving their own works.  Two in-person sessions are being offered on Saturday at 11am – 12:30pm and 1:30-3pm, and there is a virtual session on Sunday 11am – 12pm.  Admission is free, but be sure to reserve a spot in advance!

2. Monster Jam is thundering into town this weekend, and tickets are still available to see the behemoth vehicles rumble around Capital One Arena.  See even more live entertainment coming to the area over the next couple of months.  Catching a show is a great cold-weather family activity!

3. Nighttime activity:  See the planets align!  Starting tonight, January 21, and for the next month, six planets will line up in the night sky.  To best see Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune,  go to a location away from lots of light shortly after sunset (or check here for best timing).

4. The #nobuy2025 trend — making a resolution not to buy new clothes for a year — seems to be popping up a lot.  And while I think that is very extreme, it’s prompting me to be more mindful of how I shop; i.e., if I’m going to do it, I will start with secondhand.  For anyone else interested in that, check out a round-up of online secondhand stores and one recommending consignment stores in Old Town.

5. I’ve been doing it all wrong, apparently.😉
