Five Things: March 4, 2025

Scene from a past butterfly exhibit at Brookside

1. Butterflies are coming back to Brookside Gardens! Montgomery Parks just announced that The Butterfly Experience (formerly called Wings of Fancy) will be returning to the park’s conservatory starting April 10. Numerous species of live butterflies and caterpillars from North America, Costa Rica, Africa, and Asia will not just be on display, but flitting about the space filled with plants and flowers — and it’s such a delight!  Tickets are already available — $14/age 13+, $9/age 3-13,  free for age 2 and under. Get a glimpse at what to expect in this KFDC post and this one about a couple of our past visits there. And see more about the wonderful Brookside Gardens here.

2. A much-beloved book is coming to life on a local stage this summer.   The touring production of Broadway’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will run at National Theatre from July 8 to September 6.  Tickets go on sale this Friday, March 7, at 12pm.  It’s sure to be a hot ticket, so don’t wait to reserve them if you’re hoping to go.

3. How fun is Revival’s Kids Rug Design Contest?  Kids in Kindergarten through 5th grade are invited to design the “rug of their dream” and submit for a chance to receive a custom rug based on their artwork.  They can sketch, color, doodle, paint…  and they’re encouraged to let imaginations run wild.  See more contest details and how to submit here.

4. Check out a huge sale on kids clothes, with deals especially great for everyday wear, but also some options if you like to dress up for cherry blossom pics — like this dress, this button down, this polo.

5. Mike Myers was perfection.

Five Things: February 25, 2025

1. Yesterday marked 15 years of KidFriendly DC! It’s kind of amazing to me that the little blog I started so many years ago is still thriving, and I’m so grateful for all of you who read it, recommend it, and offer feedback — both kind and critical.  If you’re curious about how it got started, this anniversary post from a bunch of years back has some insight.  And for where it’s (kind of) going, check out my newer venture, District Mix, where this post shares more.  More importantly, to celebrate this KFDC milestone, I’m doing a little giveaway — see below for details and to enter!

2. The outdoor ice skating season has started to wind down.  Both The Wharf and Washington Harbour ice rinks have closed, and through this weekend is the final opportunity to glide at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink (and so far the forecast looks like it will be perfect for it).  A few other rinks  will be open until mid-March, so if you want to get in some last skates under the sky, this post has details on places around the area to do that.

3. Have you heard about the Economic Blackout happening this Friday?  The People’s Union, a “grassroots movement dedicated to economic resistance, government accountability, and corporate reform,” is calling for a 24-hour boycott of retailers and any non-essential purchases.  Read more about it here (scroll all the way down for details on the Blackout).

4. I recently discovered Society 6 for unique home decor.  A few things I especially like: An art print for the kitchen, a bright and happy duvet for the guest room, and a pretty tablecloth.

5. This Reel resonated with our family…lol.

GIVEAWAY! To celebrate 15 years of KFDC, I’m giving one lucky KFDC reader a set of three DC-inspired books by local author (and friend) JoAnn Hill:  Secret Washington, DC: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure, DC Scavenger, and Unique Eats and Eateries of Washington, DC.  To enter, simply leave a comment below telling me your very favorite activity, place, or event that you learned about from KidFriendly DC.  This giveaway will only run until Friday, February 28, then a winner will drawn at random and notified shortly thereafter.  Good luck!
