Egg Hunt Weekend

Little ones (ages 1-3 and 4-6) will have a chance to hunt for eggs throughout the day at this Maryland Farm that looks like something out of a fairytale. After hunting, they get to turn the eggs in for a goodie bag. The petting farm, rides, and play areas will be open for all to enjoy, too, along with gem mining and geode cracking. Be sure to take a look at the website for a heads-up on how the egg hunts will run, so you can make the most of your day there. Egg Hunt at Freddy’s Place
Where: Frederick Douglass National Historic Site | Anacostia, DC

Celebrate the lasting legacy of Frederick Douglass at the National Park Service’s annual Easter Egg Hunt. The event will take place on Saturday, April 20, 2019 from 10 am to 1 pm at Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in historic Anacostia. At this free community event, children ages 0-12 will hunt for Easter eggs, take pictures with the Easter bunny, play games on the lawn of Cedar Hill, and experience the power of place with ranger led tours of Douglass’s historic home. Join in the fun with arts and crafts lead by local community organizations Konsider Dis and EYL 365 Project. Enjoy story time with Dr. Kelsi Bracmort, author of Simone Visits the Museum and DC native, and get your book signed!

Egg hunts, Easter bunny visits, and more spring fun to celebrate Easter and the season is happening all around the area. Even if you’re not big on the holiday, there are events and attractions beyond bunnies and candy-filled eggs that will have the whole fam hopping with joy. Find a list of them here.

Tulips Galore
Where: Burnside Farm | Nokesville, VA
When: Saturday, & Sunday, 9am – 6pm
Admission: $8/day

Experience a bit of Holland in Northern Virginia at Burnside Farms’ annual festival. Blooming tulips stretching along acres of fields in an array of colors and varieties is absolutely stunning. Even better, you can pick your own to bring the beauty home ($1 per stem). Admission also includes bouncy fun, a playhouse area, cornhole games, and authentic dutch wooden shoes to “klomp” around in. A cow train and wagon rides are an extra $2. Advance admission $10 weekends + $2 extra if you purchase there. (Note: Open weather permitting, so be sure to check their Facebook page or call ahead if it looks iffy out). And if you love a good flower bloom, be sure to see what else is coming up (literally!) around the area.

Walk amid a garden of butterflies as Brookside Garden’s amazing Wings of Fancy during the first weekend of its annual run. The display featuring live butterflies and caterpillars from all over the world is sure to delight! Plan to tour the rest of Brookside’s lovely grounds while you’re there and see if there are any other special kids’ programs to enjoy. National Park Week starts on Saturday, and it’s kicking off with a fee free day, so there’s no entrance fee to national parks that usually charge admission. Take advantage and hit the trail at Shenandoah, Prince William Forest, Great Falls, Harpers Ferry, or head up to Baltimore to explore Fort McHenry. Find even more parks to visit here.

Dino-fy Yourself
Where: Natural History Museum | National Mall, DC

Dinosaurs, giant sloths and mastodons, oh my! During this program, participants ages 8 and up can use art materials to create prehistoric animal costumes, wearable art and accessories informed and inspired by science and the animals that will be featured in the new Fossil Hall which opens this summer. Participants can wear their creations on June 8th as part of the Fossil Hall opening celebration. This will take place at the Lab in the Q?rius Education Center. Registration required! And younger children can go to this program (registration also required).

Anacostia River Festival

The 5th annual Anacostia River Festival is once again a premier event and official closing of the 2019 National Cherry Blossom Festival! Celebrate the Anacostia River with some fun outdoor recreation! Explore the river by canoe, ride in a bike parade, play lawn games with your family, and experience Southeast DC’s local arts scene.

Tulips in the City

CityCenterDC, in partnership with Bloomia, will delight the District once again with our second annual Tulip Festival this spring. The Park at CityCenter will be filled with thousands of tulips for visitors to pick and purchase for just $1 a stem. A portion of the proceeds from the weekend will be donated to DC Central Kitchen.

Portrait Stories & Discoveries

Drop in at the Portrait Gallery to listen to a story about Walt Whitman, and complete a hands-on activity. When you’re done there, pick up a Portrait Discovery Kit to explore the museum (and the American Art Museum housed in the same building). Fun at Fairfax Parks

Admission: Varies by activity

The Fairfax County Park Authority hosts all kinds of events on weekends for guests of all ages. Solve a history Mystery at Frying Pan Farm Park. Go on a dinosaur Egg Hunt at Hidden Meadows Nature Center. Enjoy birds, blossoms, and butterflies on a wagon ride through Riverbend Park. Occoquan Peep Show
Where: Historic Downtown Occoquan, VA
When: Saturday, 11am – 4pm
Admission: Free

Participating Occoquan businesses flying yellow balloons will display creative dioramas using marshmallow Easter Peeps. Dioramas can be based on current events, community happenings, politics, movies, art, science fiction, and fantasy. Visitors to Occoquan will judge each diorama, vote for their favorites, and enter the drawing to win a Peep Swag Bag! Start your day at Town Hall to collect a contest entry form. Don’t miss the photo booth and visit by the Easter Bunny.

Hop on the Eye Spy Trains
Where: Montgomery County Parks | Cabin John & Wheaton, MD

Spring Eye Spy Trains are chugging along at Cabin John and Wheaton Regional Parks. Hop on board and look for hidden figures in the woods as you ride around the park. Of course, stay to play at the park, too. Read KFDC write-ups about the Cabin John playground and the Wheaton playground.

Easter Brunch

If you want to take the family out to celebrate the holiday, there are a bunch of restaurants around the area offering special Easter brunch menus, many that the whole gang will enjoy. Washingtonian magazine has a nice round-up of them, and Brightest Young Things has good recommendations, too!

DC United vs. New York City FC

Admission: Tickets prices vary

Kick it at a DC United match on Sunday afternoon as they host New York City FC. If you haven’t been to the new stadium yet, you’re in for a treat — it’s a great arena with excellent views of the action on the field as well as the city skyline. I recommend taking public transportation as parking can be difficult. Or park in the Navy Yard neighborhood and plan to walk from there (then grab dinner in the area after).

The Weekend Round-Up: April 12-14

As this goes live, the forecast looks a little stormy for the weekend, so there’s a chance some events might be postponed or canceled. I’ll keep you posted the best I can — the KFDC Facebook Page is the best place to stay updated — but it’ll be a good idea to check websites or call ahead, especially for outdoor events. Root for the home team as the Nats host the Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend. Be sure to check out special promos — Friday is the Juan Soto Bobblehead giveaway (first 25,000 fans), Saturday they’ll recognize the year-round charitable work of the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation in the local community by selling Myster Grab Bags in the Center Field Plaza. And on Sunday, little fans can run the bases after the game! Don’t forget to sign up ages 4-12 for the Jr. Nationals Kids Club and check these KFDC tips on how to save on a day at the ballpark.

National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade
Where: Constitution Avenue, 7th – 17th St NW | Downtown DC
When: Saturday, 10am – 12pm
Admission: Free

The Cherry Blossom Festival comes to a close after this weekend, but there are still several events taking place to celebrate the season — the biggest the annual parade. Thousands of people line Constitution Avenue every year to watch the procession of lavish floats, giant helium balloons, marching bands, and a variety of performers roll through the city. Tickets for grandstand seats are available for $20, but you can stake out a spot along the curb for free. Plan to arrive early to get a good view — the crowds come out for this one, especially if it’s a pretty spring day.

Sakura Matsuri
Where: Pennsylvania Ave, 3rd-7th St NW | Downtown DC
When: Saturday, 10:30am – 6pm
Admission: $10/ages 13+, free/12 & under

Following the Cherry Blossom parade, many folks head over to Sakura Matsuri, the Japanese Street Festival that is America’s largest one-day exhibition of Japanese culture. The 59th annual event will feature live music and dance performances, all kinds of Asian and Western foods, martial arts demos, Japanese art, and more. Be prepared for a crowd.

Auto Focus
Where: Washington Convention Center
When: Saturday, & Sunday
Admission: $12/adults, $5/ages 6-12, free for 5 and under

The 2019 Washington Auto Show is in its second and final weekend. If there’s any “grown-up” event that is equally fun for all ages, this is it. More than 700 cars and trucks are on display for guests to check out. And especially for kids will be appearances by some of their favorite characters along with the auto-fun. See this post from last year and this one from earlier KFDC days years ago for more about the event.

Cherokee Days Festival
Where: American Indian Museum | National Mall, DC
When: Friday – Sunday, 10am – 5pm
Admission: Free

The National Museum of the American Indian celebrates Cherokee history during the sixth annual Cherokee Days Festival. Three days of festivities include the installation of the original Treaty of New Echota (1835) with the Cherokee Nation, two banner exhibitions “The Cherokee Culture” and “A Story of Cherokee Removal,” and a festival full of cultural demonstrations and performances. Storytelling, traditional flute playing, weaponry, wood carving, beadwork, traditional games, basket weaving, pottery demonstrations, plus music and dance performances will showcase the culture and life-ways of the Cherokee.

NSA Family Day

Take the whole fam o this special Family Day with the National Academy of Science… Head to DecisionTown in the World of Genomics — where your choices matter! Visit to see how the decisions you make every day are influenced by science, engineering, and medicine. Each stop in town, more than 17 in all, offers a different activity centered on an issue facing DecisionTown as it plans for the future. Complete several activities and become a DecisionTown Citizen at Town Hall and receive special giveaway prizes. Visit the website for more details about this program geared for ages 3 and up.

Dog Days Bloom Festival
Where: Great Country Farms | Bluemont, VA

Great Country Farms is going to the dogs! Bring your furry friend for a day that is all about them.
Watch competition-level canines from Appalachian Air Canines fetch Frisbee’s and novice and veteran competitors can join in on the fun! Meet vendors with specialty pet products, receive training tips and lessons, and compete in our Doggy Olympics for prizes! Our beer and wine garden will be open serving Dirt Farm Brewing beer and Bluemont Vineyard wine. All dogs must remain on a leash sporting their finest rabies certification tag. Please bring a water bowl to keep Fido hydrated, and pick up whatever they leave behind.
After a fun day on the farm, bring your dog up to Bluemont Vineyard for their Dog Days Yappy Hour!

Enjoy Japanese teas at the historic Frying Pan Meeting House. Stop by the Indoor Arena first for a map and instructions.

Family Day

Head to the National Museum of African American History and Culture for a Family Day inspired by the Museum’s first children’s book, A is for All the Things You Are: A Joyful ABC Book written by Anna Forgerson Hindley and illustrated by Keturah A. Bodo. Drop -in activities will be available on the 2nd floor throughout the day for children ages 0-8 will include “All the Things I Am!”- inspired Art Making, plus Story Time in the library – kids can celebrate all the things that make them special by joining an interactive and empowering story time — held at 11:30am, 12:30pm, and 1:30pm, readings last approximately 20 minutes, and a new book will be read at each story time. Registration is encouraged.

The Nats aren’t the only baseball team in town. The Bowie Baysox, one of the local minor league teams, are hosting the Harrisburg Senators all weekend, and there’s always extra fun and games especially for kids — read more about Baysox games in this KFDC post. And a head’s up that Sunday is Kids Opening Day with pony rides, a petting zoo, and more special treats for young fans.

Wheaton Family Theatre Festival

InterAct Story Theatre’s Season Four of Wheaton Family Theatre Festival welcomes Marian Licha on Saturday with a morning of stories and music for kids and families! The performance is free and open to the public (¡GRATIS y abierto al público!) — no need to reserve tickets, just drop in and join the fun! Recommended for ages 3 and up.

Washington Improv Theater Presents: The NitWITs

Every NitWITs show is a high-energy, unique theater experience for families. You’ve never seen anything like it before and you’ll never see anything like it again…because it is all made up right on the spot with the help of your suggestions. Audience members guide the cast in making up spontaneous stories and playing fun theater games in a family-friendly, relaxed atmosphere. This show is recommended for ages 6 and up and lasts about an hour. Milling Day
Where : Peirce Mill | Rock Creek Park, DC
When: Saturday, 11am – 2pm
Admission: Free

Families can see a 200-year-old grist mill in action and learn how a water wheel and giant gears turn corn into cornmeal. Children can also celebrate the new season by planting seeds and making birds’ nests up at the barn, and by looking for signs of spring in the orchard. Read more about Peirce Mill in this KFDC post.

Cherry Blossom Ballet Performance
Where: National Arboretum | Northeast DC
When: Saturday, 11am – 2pm
Admission: Free

Celebrate spring with The Washington Ballet at the National Arboretum. Enjoy cherry blossom inspired performances every half hour from 11am – 2pm on Saturday. Meet and take photos with some of the dancers, do a craft, and learn about The Washington School of Ballet. Families may also want to visit the Ikebana International Exhibit and Kids Class that day. Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging.

Arlington Palooza
Where: Alcova Heights Park | Arlington, VA
When: Saturday, 1-4pm
Admission: Free

Join the Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation for a day full of free fun at the third annual Arlington Palooza. The outdoor program will have inflatables, crafts, lawn games, live music, food trucks, face painting, and community exhibitors for all to enjoy!

John Wilmerding Community Celebration
Where: National Gallery of Art | National Mall, DC

This Community Celebration marks the opening of Oliver Lee Jackson: Recent Paintings with a program that weaves the rich sounds, rhythms, and colors of jazz with visual art. Activities include in-gallery exploration, art making, and live performances. In conjunction with the community day, visitors are invited to view a specially installed photo mural at 7th Street and Madison Drive NW that celebrates the extraordinary diversity of Washington, D.C. Made possible by a grant from the Alice L. Walton Foundation.

Happy Birthday to the Bard!

‘Tis Shakespeare’s 455th birthday, and the Folger Shakespeare Library is celebrating with its annual Open House on Sunday afternoon. In true Renaissance fashion, there will be song and dance, Elizabethan crafts, theatrical performances (including puppets for little ones), sword fighting demos, special tours, a giant birthday cake, an appearance by Queen Elizabeth I , and even more. The free event takes place rain or shine. Food trucks will be stationed in Puck’s Circle. The Folger Shakespeare Library is located at 201 East Capitol Street SE. Fairy & Gnome Home Festival

This annual festival at one of the most enchanting places will delight the whole family — and we know from experience. Festivities are scattered throughout the beautiful grounds, creating a charming journey of discovery for young (and young at heart) guests. Journey through magical realms including the Fairy Lolly, Stone Story Circle, Bubblelandia, Gnomeville, Treetopia, and more. Rumpus Room

DC’s only daytime dance party for families returns! Prepare for a dance floor filled with little ones, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and caregivers. The soundtrack for Rumpus Room is always a family-friendly mix of popular dance hits, classics, children’s songs and more, all at a kid-friendly volume.
Rumpus Room is designed for kids 8 and under, but older siblings are welcome! No adults are permitted without a child. Maximum 3 children per adult. Infants/crawling children enter free!

Sakura Sunday
Where: National Harbor | Oxon Hill, MD
When: Sunday, 11am – 8pm
Admission: Free

This year, National Harbor will be joining the DC region in the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival. Sakura Sunday will feature a wide array of fincluding traditional Japanese picnicking with food available for sale; a sake, rosé and beer garden; a Japanese Market; and Japanese-inspired music and entertainment. Restaurants and retailers will also participate in special offers and a cherry blossom store display window competition, and The Capital Wheel will turn pink during the festival. Muse Paintbar will feature cherry blossom art classes and a live painting demonstration as well.

Sesame Street Singalong
Where: Nordstrom | Tyson’s Corner, VA

The city is at its prettiest as the cherry trees are in bloom, and they should still be brightening up the landscape this weekend. The National Mall and Tidal Basin are sure to be teeming with blossom oglers, but braving the crowds is worth it, in my opinion. If you’re planning to partake in the peak experience over the next couple of days (or anytime, for that matter), be sure to check out these tips for viewing the beloved flowers before you go.

Auto Focus

The annual Washington Auto Show has zoomed back into town. And if there’s any “grown-up” event that is equally fun for all ages, this is it. The Auto Show is like a Truck Touch, but with automobiles — hundreds of them — on display for guests to check out. Other activities like Ride ‘n Drives and celeb appearances give guests even more to do and see. There will also be fun especially for kids, including a Family Fun Zone and photo ops with some of their favorite characters along with the sweet rides. The show will be in town through April 14. Fairies in the Garden

Annmarie’s magicalicious exhibit of fairy and gnome houses opens this weekend. As if the sculpture garden near Solomons, MD, wasn’t already wonderful, this annual display adds extra delight to a visit there with more than 75 handmade fairy and gnome homes scattered throughout the grounds. Visit the Arts Building to borrow a costume (or purchase one in the Gift Shop) to get into the fanciful spirit, grab a guide, and start your journey to locate them all. Reading of The Undefeated

Join poet and educator Kwame Alexander who will share inspiration and read excerpts from his newly released picture book The Undefeated. Originally performed for ESPN’s website The Undefeated, this illustrated poem is a love letter to black life in the United States. With references to lyrics and lines originally shared by our most celebrated heroes, Martin Luther King Jr., Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, and others, the work offers deeper insights into the accomplishments of the past, while bringing stark attention to the endurance and spirit of those surviving and thriving in the present. The Undefeated brings together race, sports, culture, and art. Kwame Alexander will be joined in conversation with artist Kadir Nelson. For ages 8+.

Egg Hunt & Marshmallow Harvest

After a long cold winter, nothing chases away the chill like a visit to the farm. Head to Great Country for the first “crop” of the spring– Marshmallow Picking! Do marshmallow peeps grow on trees? Be sure to check it out and harvest a few to roast on the bonfire with Farmer Bob. You can even purchase a s’mores kit to melt away that chocolate craving. Guests can also help find Easter Bunny eggs during egg hunts (by age – see the schedule) with over 20,000 treat-filled eggs. Plan to visit spring chicks and baby animals, check out the spring plantings in the greenhouse, take a hayride and rejoice in the new season. The DC Youth Orchestra Program is opening its doors to the public on Saturday, with a day of free musical events for the entire family, featuring a concert by the popular DuPont Brass!  At 12:00 pm, DuPont Brass will perform the feature concert in the auditorium. Theater Arts Open House

Launch Party for Acton Children’s Business Fair

The annual Blossom Kite Festival is a favorite for many during the blossom season. The sight of thousands of kites in all colors, shapes, and sizes soaring around the Washington Monument truly is a sight to behold. The sails you see flying at the Festival each spring range from simple to pretty darn creative. Dragons, sharks, butterflies, giant soccer balls, even some that look like big, beautiful origami works way outnumber your basic diamond. And anyone can go fly their kites, so BYO or make one there at an activity station. There’s a competition aspect to the event, too; expert kite enthusiasts will wow crowds with cool stunts, and prizes will be awarded to winners of various categories such as most beautiful, funniest, and aerodynamics. Annual NOAA Open House

The public is invited to celebrate the arrival of this new public art installaton with festivities throughout Waterfront Park. Inspired by the historic Fresnel lens of Jones Point Lighthouse, Mirror Mirror responds to sound with illuminated color. Visitors can talk, sing, and play within the installation and be bathed in rainbow-hued light. The artwork does not make noise. It responds to sound with light, allowing visitors to interact with the artwork and affect its appearance using their voices and bodies.

DCRoller Girls

ARTECHOUSE is celebrating many things with its newest digital art exhibit: Cherry blossoms, spring, renewal, and women artists! In Peak Bloom features interactive and immersive digital art installations inspired by the fragile beauty and ephemeral nature of the cherry blossom. The works are beautiful and delightful, unique and profound. They’ll have kids and adults alike smiling and appreciating the gifts of art and nature.

Cherry Blossom Family Festival

Join the American Art Museum and the National Cherry Blossom Festival for a celebration of Japanese culture. Kick off the day with a taiko drumming performance outside of the museum at the F Street entrance. Enjoy face painting, make cherry blossom crafts, listen to Japanese music, and go on a spring-themed scavenger hunt through the museum’s galleries. This is just the start of many cherry blossom celebrations over the next few of weeks — plan for more with this post listing the activities families will enjoy best.

Japanese Culture Day
Where: Library of Congress | Capitol Hill, DC

Children of all ages and their families can learn about Japanese culture through reading, writing, and craft-making with Japanese cultural and linguistic professionals. Japanese-related books will be on display, and a special highlight of the day is “Japan-In-A-Suitcase,” an inspiring program about Japanese life and culture. Other activities include Japanese drum music and dance performances, instructions on the art of tiara-making by former Cherry Blossom princesses, origami artwork lessons, decorative Konobori coloring, and the kimono dress-up experience. Marvel Universe LIVE!

Spider Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Panther, Hulk, Black Widow, and the Guardian of the Galaxy…Marvel’s mightiest heroes face off against some of the most threatening villains in the Marvel Universe. Slime Expo

Mt. Olivet KidStuff Sale

The Mount Olivet Preschool is hosting their annual KidStuff Sale! Shop for a HUGE selection of gently used items. Flying in the Great Hall: Final Fight

Witness death-defying feats of aeronautics — well, model aeronautics, anyway! The DC Maxecuters, a club for model aviation enthusiasts, have been sharing their love of model aviation in the National Building Museum’s Great Hall for over 20 years. Don’t miss this opportunity to watch them send both rubber band- and electric-powered model planes soaring between the 75-foot columns and overhead. And this will be the DC Maxecuters’ last year of Flying in the Great Hall, so this is a chance to wish them clear skies and safe landings in all their future travels! 

Big Apple Circus

This weekend is your last chance to experience the Big Apple Circus while it’s in town. Celebrating its 41st season, the show features amazing stunts under the big top. Known for its one-ring, artistic, European-style, no seat is more than 50 feet from the performers. That’s perfect for viewing some first-ever featsalong with fan favorites. Hire wire acts, contortionists, bicycle acrobatics, hilarious clowns, and doggie dances are some of thrills and fun you can expect. Women’s History Celebration

Celebrate Women’s History Month at the DAR Museum! Join us to recognize powerful American women who left their mark on history. Come learn about your favorite heroines and discover some new faces as well. Enjoy activities, crafts, games, music, and a preview performance of 19: The Musical from 12pm-1pm (seating for that is first come, first served).

Several local bookstores around the area host free story times for children on weekends that often include more than just a reading. Head to Hooray for Books in Old Town Alexandria on Friday or Saturday for story time from 10:30-11am. Solid State Books on H Street NE hosts readings on Saturday (ages 0-5) and Sunday (age 4+) at 10:30am. At Kramerbooks in Dupont Circle, they’ll watch your kiddos while you grab a coffee on Sundays at 11am.

Sensory-Friendly Screenings

Catch Sensory-Friendly Screenings of Captain Marvel and Wonder Park on Saturday morning. The newest My Way Matinees from Regal give everyone the opportunity to experience a movie once a month with the sound turned down and the lights turned up. Storybook Theatre

Delight your friends and family with this crowd-pleasing talent! Join professional balloon twister Julie Zauzmer for Balloon Animals 101.
