Egg Hunt Weekend
Where: Clark’s Elioak Farm | Clarkesburg, MD

Little ones (ages 1-3 and 4-6) will have a chance to hunt for eggs throughout the day at this Maryland Farm that looks like something out of a fairytale. After hunting, they get to turn the eggs in for a goodie bag. The petting farm, rides, and play areas will be open for all to enjoy, too, along with gem mining and geode cracking. Be sure to take a look at the website for a heads-up on how the egg hunts will run, so you can make the most of your day there. Egg Hunt at Freddy’s Place
Where: Frederick Douglass National Historic Site | Anacostia, DC
When: Saturday, 10am – 1pm
Admission: Free
Celebrate the lasting legacy of Frederick Douglass at the National Park Service’s annual Easter Egg Hunt. The event will take place on Saturday, April 20, 2019 from 10 am to 1 pm at Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in historic Anacostia. At this free community event, children ages 0-12 will hunt for Easter eggs, take pictures with the Easter bunny, play games on the lawn of Cedar Hill, and experience the power of place with ranger led tours of Douglass’s historic home. Join in the fun with arts and crafts lead by local community organizations Konsider Dis and EYL 365 Project. Enjoy story time with Dr. Kelsi Bracmort, author of Simone Visits the Museum and DC native, and get your book signed!

Egg hunts, Easter bunny visits, and more spring fun to celebrate Easter and the season is happening all around the area. Even if you’re not big on the holiday, there are events and attractions beyond bunnies and candy-filled eggs that will have the whole fam hopping with joy. Find a list of them here.
Tulips Galore
Where: Burnside Farm | Nokesville, VA
When: Saturday, & Sunday, 9am – 6pm
Admission: $8/day
Experience a bit of Holland in Northern Virginia at Burnside Farms’ annual festival. Blooming tulips stretching along acres of fields in an array of colors and varieties is absolutely stunning. Even better, you can pick your own to bring the beauty home ($1 per stem). Admission also includes bouncy fun, a playhouse area, cornhole games, and authentic dutch wooden shoes to “klomp” around in. A cow train and wagon rides are an extra $2. Advance admission $10 weekends + $2 extra if you purchase there. (Note: Open weather permitting, so be sure to check their Facebook page or call ahead if it looks iffy out). And if you love a good flower bloom, be sure to see what else is coming up (literally!) around the area.
Fancy This
Where: Brookside Gardens

Admission: $8/ages 13 and up, $5/3-12, free ages 0-2
Walk amid a garden of butterflies as Brookside Garden’s amazing Wings of Fancy during the first weekend of its annual run. The display featuring live butterflies and caterpillars from all over the world is sure to delight! Plan to tour the rest of Brookside’s lovely grounds while you’re there and see if there are any other special kids’ programs to enjoy. National Park Week starts on Saturday, and it’s kicking off with a fee free day, so there’s no entrance fee to national parks that usually charge admission. Take advantage and hit the trail at Shenandoah, Prince William Forest, Great Falls, Harpers Ferry, or head up to Baltimore to explore Fort McHenry. Find even more parks to visit here.
Dino-fy Yourself
Where: Natural History Museum | National Mall, DC
When: Saturday, 10:30am – 12pm
Admission: Free
Dinosaurs, giant sloths and mastodons, oh my! During this program, participants ages 8 and up can use art materials to create prehistoric animal costumes, wearable art and accessories informed and inspired by science and the animals that will be featured in the new Fossil Hall which opens this summer. Participants can wear their creations on June 8th as part of the Fossil Hall opening celebration. This will take place at the Lab in the Q?rius Education Center. Registration required! And younger children can go to this program (registration also required).
Anacostia River Festival

The 5th annual Anacostia River Festival is once again a premier event and official closing of the 2019 National Cherry Blossom Festival! Celebrate the Anacostia River with some fun outdoor recreation! Explore the river by canoe, ride in a bike parade, play lawn games with your family, and experience Southeast DC’s local arts scene.
Tulips in the City
Where: The Park at CityCenterDC | Downtown DC

CityCenterDC, in partnership with Bloomia, will delight the District once again with our second annual Tulip Festival this spring. The Park at CityCenter will be filled with thousands of tulips for visitors to pick and purchase for just $1 a stem. A portion of the proceeds from the weekend will be donated to DC Central Kitchen.

Portrait Stories & Discoveries

Drop in at the Portrait Gallery to listen to a story about Walt Whitman, and complete a hands-on activity. When you’re done there, pick up a Portrait Discovery Kit to explore the museum (and the American Art Museum housed in the same building). Fun at Fairfax Parks

The Fairfax County Park Authority hosts all kinds of events on weekends for guests of all ages. Solve a history Mystery at Frying Pan Farm Park. Go on a dinosaur Egg Hunt at Hidden Meadows Nature Center. Enjoy birds, blossoms, and butterflies on a wagon ride through Riverbend Park. Occoquan Peep Show
Where: Historic Downtown Occoquan, VA
When: Saturday, 11am – 4pm
Admission: Free
Participating Occoquan businesses flying yellow balloons will display creative dioramas using marshmallow Easter Peeps. Dioramas can be based on current events, community happenings, politics, movies, art, science fiction, and fantasy. Visitors to Occoquan will judge each diorama, vote for their favorites, and enter the drawing to win a Peep Swag Bag! Start your day at Town Hall to collect a contest entry form. Don’t miss the photo booth and visit by the Easter Bunny.
Hop on the Eye Spy Trains
Where: Montgomery County Parks | Cabin John & Wheaton, MD

Spring Eye Spy Trains are chugging along at Cabin John and Wheaton Regional Parks. Hop on board and look for hidden figures in the woods as you ride around the park. Of course, stay to play at the park, too. Read KFDC write-ups about the Cabin John playground and the Wheaton playground.

If you want to take the family out to celebrate the holiday, there are a bunch of restaurants around the area offering special Easter brunch menus, many that the whole gang will enjoy. Washingtonian magazine has a nice round-up of them, and Brightest Young Things has good recommendations, too!
DC United vs. New York City FC

Kick it at a DC United match on Sunday afternoon as they host New York City FC. If you haven’t been to the new stadium yet, you’re in for a treat — it’s a great arena with excellent views of the action on the field as well as the city skyline. I recommend taking public transportation as parking can be difficult. Or park in the Navy Yard neighborhood and plan to walk from there (then grab dinner in the area after).
