Where to Play on the Weekdays: June 18-22

Sasha's first spray park foray in Arlington two years ago.

Monday – Go for a swim under the open sky.  As of today, outdoor public pools are open on weekdays for the season (though be sure to check schedules for pools within the DC Department of Parks & Recreation; all are closed one day a week for maintenance).  For outdoor pools in Montgomery County, go here.  And for pools in Alexandria, go here.  *If weather doesn’t permit, head to an indoor public pool instead. Find them here, here, here, and here. (And if you’ve got other public pools to recommend, outdoors and in, feel free to do so in the comments.)

Tuesday – The strawberry season has just about ended, but you can still have a “berry” (aagh… had to!) good time picking your own fruits at local farms. Blueberries, blackberries and more fresh produce are ripe for the picking at many places. This post from last summer lists farms with pick-your-own opportunities.  And it never hurts to check websites or call ahead to make sure the pickings are good.

Wednesday – The heat is going to be ON, and I’m not just talking about the NBA finals. Good timing, as the Regal Summer Movie Fest begins this week. Every Tuesday and Wednesday through the summer, participating theaters will show kids’ movies for just a dollar. Go here to see what’s playing at a theater near you.

Thursday – Make a splash at a local sprayground.  Like the outdoor pools, DC DPR splash parks are now open on weekdays for the summer!  You can also play in the fountains at Georgetown Waterfront Park and Yards Park. Or head to Arlington where Lyon Village Park, Hayes Park, and Drew Park are local favorites.

Friday – Celebrate Choctaw Days at the National Museum of the American Indian, where the festivals are always wonderful, imo. The celebration will actually begin Wednesday and run through Saturday, featuring traditional performances in the Potomac Atrium, storytelling programs, art displays, tribal cooking demos, and more. While you’re at the museum, take the kids to the imagiNATIONS Activity Center for even more hands-on fun.

Enter to Win Tickets to “Goldilocks!” at The Puppet Co.

The Bear Family and Goldilocks on the Puppet Co. stage.

Note: The ticket giveaway has ended.

The Puppet Co. is getting ready to bring its next show the main stage, and you have a chance to win a family four-pack of tickets to see it! Goldilocks!, a favorite of the playhouse, presents a classic children’s tale from a new — and quirky — perspective. Here’s The Puppet Co.’s description of the show:

The porridge has been eaten and Baby Bear’s chair is broken.  But who is really responsible?  Is it Goldilocks, the cute little blond found hiding upstairs, or could someone – or something – else be responsible?  Goldilocks and Papa Bear meet face-to-face in a makeshift courtroom in the woods to settle once and for all whether or not Goldilocks is the criminal the storybooks make her out to be.  The audience gets to decide where the truth lies.  Fur will fly!

Recommended for children in Pre-K – Grade 4, Goldilocks! will run from June 8 – July 15.  Shows will be presented on Thursdays and Fridays at 10am & 11:30am, and on Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30am & 1pm. Tickets are $10.

GIVEAWAY: Want a chance to win a family four-pack of tickets to see Goldilocks! on Saturday, June 9, or Sunday, June 10?  Simply leave a comment on this post. To be eligible, you must like KidFriendly DC on Facebook. Get an extra entry for following on Twitter (let me know you’ve done so). A winner will be drawn at random and announced later this week. Good luck!
