Five Things: April 9, 2025

1. This Friday, 3-5pm at Union Station,  join the GR8 City Celebration in honor of Alex Ovechkin becoming the NHL’s All-Time goals leader.  There will be a FREE fan event in the main hall — and Ovi will be there along with some of his Caps teammates!  There will also be photo ops, interactive stations, giveaways, alumni appearances, and more fun.  Other ways DC is celebrating include a special pregame ceremony before the Caps game Thursday evening (look for tickets) and some fun tributes around the city.  Read more about the GR8 City Celebration here.

2. Are you looking for last minute coverage — and fun! — for your kids during Spring Break next week? RDUTennis enters year #9 on campus at Trinity Washington University located at 125 Michigan Ave NE. They are offering daily drop-in or a 4-day camp option for ages 4-14.  This camp will offer activities on the soccer field, indoor gym space, tennis courts, and plenty of rest areas inside. Tennis experience is not required to join any spring or summer camp through RDUTennis.  Questions can be emailed to Brian Rosenthal at brian@rdutennis.net or call 919-395-7329. Pricing, scheduling, and the path to register can be found here.

3. If you like to shop secondhand, check out H Street Outreach & Thrift. The space isn’t huge, but it holds a lot of great inventory.  On a recent visit there, I found a J.Crew dress for me and two lululemon pieces for Sasha. And the best part:  Kids clothes are free!  This is part of founder Andrew Frenkel’s mission to provide free clothing and essential items to help support those in need.  You can help, too, by donating clothes your kids (and you) no longer wear.  The shop is located at 1108 H Street NE.

4. A Passover menu for those celebrating (and some yummy sounding dishes even if you’re not).

5. If you’re going to be in town next week, be sure to bookmark the KFDC Spring Break Guide loaded with ideas for hanging with the kids on their week off!

Where to Go & What to Do During Spring Break 2025

Spring Break starts soon for most students in the DC area, so you may be in need of some extra reminders of all the great activities there are to do around the area — both tried & true and new & cool! — to keep your kids entertained when they’re off from school. And if some of this sounds familiar, that’s because a version of this post has been published in many previous years, but it’s always updated to reflect what’s currently going on.

Many of the ideas here are already on the blog, but sometimes a little guidance for what’s best at certain times helps. Among these recommendations are special and seasonal activities,  exhibits and shows that are currently running, iconic spots in DC, easy day trips out of the city, and outings that take advantage of the great spring weather.

And, of course, the rest of the blog is full of suggestions if you want even more options. So, whether you’re enjoying a staycation or visiting from out of town, you should have no problem keeping the kids (and you!) happy during the week off — or on, depending how you look at it. Happy Spring Break!

Five Things: April 1, 2025

1. There’s another bloom to enjoy around the area along with a fun event this weekend to celebrate it…  Bluebells at the Bend is this Saturday, 10am – 2pm, at Riverbend Park in Great Falls.  The annual festival features wildflower walks, live animals, exhibitors, music, crafts, and concessions.  Get tickets online in advance for $10, otherwise they are $15 day of (free for ages 4 & under).  If you don’t make it to the festival, plan for a hike among the flowers another time — read about a great one here.  You can also see them on the Bluebell Trail at Bull Run Regional Park.

2. Also this weekend: Awesome Con!   The annual convention is nirvana for pop culture fans, bringing a three-day celebration of television, movies, comic books, science, technology, and more to DC.  Programming includes special appearances by Ninja Turtles and Lord of the Rings characters (Sean Austin, Liv Tyler, Orlando Bloom), plus many other iconic characters, comic artists, authors, and voice actors.  It’s a wild event with so much to do and see — the cosplay alone is amazing!  Tickets start at $65/adult, $25/child.

3. Events around the area to celebrate Easter have begun.  Great Country Farms is hosting egg hunts on both weekdays and weekends, and there will be egg-cellent fun at more places starting this Saturday.  It doesn’t hurt to get tickets now to ensure admission to popular ones. This post about Easter celebrations has details on where you can hop to it.

4. Recently started reading this much raved about book and can barely put it down!

5. LOLOLOL
