Where to Play on the Weekdays: May 7-11

Fun is afoot on The Awakening at National Harbor πŸ˜‰

Monday – Let little ones flex their green thumbs at the U.S. Botanic Garden. The adorable Children’s Garden recently opened again for the warm seasons and welcomes little ones to dig, plant, water, and enjoy some play time. Tour the collections, too, and walk amid tropical rainforest, desert, and woodland flora, and view the current Wall Flowers: Botanical Murals exhibit. Take a stroll through the National Garden where you can stop and smell the roses and roam around the lovely outdoor area. Hours are 10am – 5pm. Admission is free. Read more about the USBG here and here.

Tuesday – Take kiddos on a fantastic adventure at Glen Echo Park, where Judy Moody and Stink: The Mad, Mad, Mad Mad Treasure Hunt is on the Adventure Theatre stage. The show is a blast for young theatre-goers as the brother-sister duo’s vacation turns into a wildly fun scavenger hunt. Showtime is 10:30am. Tickets are $19.50.

Wednesday – Visit the National Arboretum! With the azalea bloom in full force, it’s a great time to go, though the Arb is always an ideal place to spend a nice day. Explore the plant collections on nature walks, check out the Washington Youth Garden and romp on the natural playground, hang out at the old Capitol columns, picnic in the Grove of State Trees, and so much more. Hours are 8am – 5pm, and admission is free. Get a glimpse of the azaleas and read more about the Arboretum in the round-up of the best outdoor places in the area β€” it leads the list!

Thursday – Cruise the Potomac from National Harbor to Old Town Alexandria (or vice versa) on a water taxi adventure. The Potomac Riverboat Company operates daily between the two destinations at various times throughout the day β€” see the schedule here. Round-trip tickets are $17/adult, $11/child (infants are free), one-way are $10/adult, $7/child. Plan to hang out, get a bite to eat, and have fun while you’re on land. Wander around the Torpedo Factory then play at Armory Tot Lot in Old Town. At National Harbor, check out The Awakening sculpture, ride the carousel, and if you’re up for a splurge, take a spin on the Capitol Wheel. Read more about National Harbor here.

Friday – Explore the local environment at Buddie Ford Nature Center. The facility in Alexandria houses fascinating exhibits (including live creatures!), hands-on activities, and a staff of friendly and knowledgeable naturalists that all ages will appreciate. Afterwards, take the fun outdoors with a short hike at the adjacent Dora Kelley Nature Park. Buddie Ford hours are 10am – 5pm (Wednesday – Saturday, 1-5pm Sunday). Admission is free.

Bonus: All this week, leading up to Mother’s Day, Fit4Mom Capitol Hill will be hosting 9 FREE fitness classes! Join a Stroller Strides session at Union Market, Canal Park, Rumsey Aquatic Center, and in Brookland. View the schedule and more details on their website.
