How about a side of fun to go with your Thanksgiving turkey? If you’re going to be in town for the holiday and looking for pre- or post-feast activities, you’ve got some options. Hit a museum for art and culture or the ice for some skating, enjoy some nature on the trail, see a show, or celebrate other holidays at events happening around the area. Here are specifics on those ideas and more. Happy Thanksgiving!

– Visit a Smithsonian museum or the National Zoo. They are all open on Thanksgiving from 10am – 5:30pm, except for the American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery which are open 11:30am – 7pm. The National Gallery of Art is open today, too, from 10am – 5pm.

– Experience Season’s Greenings at the U.S. Botanic Garden on opening day! Get an idea of what to expect in this post from last year about the annual holiday exhibit.

– Spend Thanksgiving morning with The Great Zucchini at Jammin’ Java. Showtime is 10:30am, general admission is $5.

– Glide in the fresh air at a local ice rink. You can lace up and skate under the sky at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden (open 10am – 5pm), Washington Harbour, Pentagon Row Ice Rink (open 10am – 11pm), Silver Spring Outdoor Ice Rink (open 12-10pm), Reston Town Center (open 10am -10pm), and Rockville Town Square. Get details on all of them.

– Bundle up for a holiday hike. Rock Creek Park, Great Falls, Roosevelt Island, and Turkey Run Park are great places close to (or in) the city to do some pre-feast tramping.

– Get into the holiday spirit at Christmas on the Potomac, the Gaylord National Resort’s spectacular seasonal attraction. Read a review of a past experience there.

– Dance off the turkey at the Kennedy Center. The evening’s free Millennium Stage performance features a swing dance party with Tom Cunningham Orchestra with special guest Jean Veloz. The show is 7-9pm, but free swing lessons start at 6pm!

– Enjoy an evening light display at one of several in the area that are already welcoming guests to view them.
