Last Minute Ideas for the Day Off

"It's a Small World" at the Verizon Center, where you can see the final performance of Disney on Ice.

If you’re looking for some things to do on the day off from school and work, here are a few ideas.  Many of these are repeats from previous posts, just compiled in one place to let you know what’s on today.  And, as always, you can check here and here for even more ongoing activities. Enjoy!

Mount Vernon for Free – In honor of George Washington’s big day, there are special festivities at his former estate. Join characters from the 18th century as they help visitors surprise General Washington with rousing birthday cheers. At “George Washington’s Surprise Birthday Party”, the first president will be presented with gifts, which he will describe and react to during a speech to his birthday visitors. Of course, you can also tour the home and grounds as well.  And as a special present to visitors, admission to the estate is FREE today.

More Presidential Pursuits – This post from last week details special events happening around town to celebrate the GW’s birthday.  Some already occurred over the weekend, but there are several you can enjoy today: George Washington’s Birthday Parade in Old Town, a visit to Lincoln’s Cottage, and a trip to the wax museum to see the Presidents Gallery.  Go here for the scoop on all of them.

Disney on Ice – Tickets are still available for the final performance of the “100 Years of Magic” show that features 65 of Disney’s unforgettable characters from 18 beloved stories.  We saw the show yesterday, and I was just as impressed with the production as the kids were captivate by seeing some of their favorite princesses, fish, animals, and mice glide, dance, and perform spectacular stunts over the ice.  Today’s show is at 12:30pm, and you can purchase tickets online through Ticketmaster. Presidents Day at NCM–  Little ones will have fun at the National Children’s Museum Launch Zone Make as they learn about past presidents and more. Make president finger puppets and an official Shrinky Dink inaugural badge, inspired by the special badges police officers wear during the inaugural period. Drop in for free 11am – 2pm.

Prez Day Jump – Pump it Up in Lanham is hosting a special jump session on the day off from school.  From 12-2pm, kids can  bounce their way through two room full of giant inflatables.  Admission is $8/child, accompanying adults are free. You can also let expend the rest of their long weekend energy and have dinner taken care of this evening from 5-7pm. The $12.95 admission includes two slices of pizza and a drink.

P.Nokio – There are still some seats available for Imagination Stage’s hip hop musical. Performances are at 11am, 1:30pm, and 4pm.  Go here to purchase tickets online.
