No School – What to Do?

DC Public Schools are closed tomorrow, April 16, for Emancipation Day. If you are still looking for activities to fill the day off (which, as of now, is predicted to be a rainy one), here are a few things to consider.

The National Museum of Natural History is always a hit with kids. I can’t even count the number of times we have visited the dinosaur and insect rooms—Owen is like my own personal docent, leading me through the exhibits and naming every creature. But for something different than the usual favorites, catch the Nature’s Best Photography Awards Exhibition, on display for just a few more weeks. It’s an amazing collection of award-winning photos from one of the best nature photography publications. The images are truly captivating; if your young ones are into wildlife, they will enjoy this.

The National Geographic Museum has it’s own wildlife photography collection currently on exhibit. “Rare: Photographs by Joe Sartore,” a series of animal portraits, is the product of a three-year study of North America’s endangered species. Here’s a chance to discuss conservation with your kids with beautiful and dramatic imagery to illustrate the point.

If your preschoolers like to boogie, head to Sova Espresso & Wine Bar on H Street NE, where the Boogie Babes will present Mr. Knick Knack at 10:30am. The musical sessions are energetic and fun, encouraging the audience to sing and dance along. Admission is $5 per child (cash only), siblings 6 months and younger are free.

After a rainy day indoors, your kids may have some energy to burn. Let them bounce and tumble it off at the PG Sport and Learning Complex. Trampolines, soft mats, and a rope swing and foam pit are just some of the apparatus to enjoy during open play in the Gymnastics Center. The fun begins at 4:30pm (registration opens at 4pm). Admission is $6/child.

And if the forecast is wrong, and the sun does shine, there are numerous options for outdoor fun –Rock Creek Park, The National Arboretum, and Turtle Park are a few great places to hang out on a nice day.

However you and the kids decide to spend the day off, enjoy!
