Celebrate Juneteenth at the Library of Congress this Weekend!

This Saturday, June 21, join the Library of Congress for a special Juneteenth Family Day!  The celebration is part of their monthly series, when visitors of all ages are invited to participate in a variety of activities and explore exhibitions on display in the Thomas Jefferson Building.  Each program includes creative activities inspired by Library of Congress collections, a chance to talk to staff experts, and a guide to using Library resources at home. They also regularly include special guest speakers and authors to delve deeper into the unique theme of each event.

Take inspiration from quilts like this one to make your own quilt square

The Juneteenth program will focus on themes of family and home.  Guests can create a fabric quilt square, hear local quilt artist Sandra Smith talk about her work, and explore quilting collections from the American Folklife Center. Bestselling and award-winning author Jewell Parker Rhodes will also be there to discuss her new middle grade novel, “Will’s Race for Home,” set during the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889.  And staff experts from the Manuscript Division will share insight on items from the Library’s Abraham Lincoln Papers. Of course, the rest of the Library of always fantastic to explore.

Activities will be held on the mezzanine level of the Jefferson Building from 10:30am to 3:30pm. The event is free, but tickets are required.

This post is sponsored by the Library of Congress, however, I only promote programs, events, and places that I genuinely believe in and think would appeal to KFDC readers.
