There’s a brand new post with recommendations for places to go if you want to be indoors, but want some active fun or something with an engaging mission. From pickleball and roller skating to tennis and ping pong to escape rooms and scavenger hunts to an indoor waterpark, you’ll find all kinds of ways to get your fun and game on. And with wet weather on the way, it’s a perfect time for it.

Break Up

Winter Break may be over, but the guide for what to do during the time off from school is still great for finding activities for the weekend. The holidays may be over, but several holiday light displays are still running through this weekend. So, if you didn’t get to experience the twinkling wonderlands during the season, or you just really like the festive illuminations, there’s still some time to see Georgetown GLOW, Light Yards, Winter Walk of Lights, and Bull Run Festival of Lightss.

Grand Opening Climbing Party
Where: SportRock RIO | Gaitherburg, MD
When: Saturday, 10am – 7pm
Admission: Free

Sportrock’s newest location at Rio is officially open and they are throwing a massive party to celebrate! It’s a totally FREE event for both members and non-members. They’ll have Intro to Climbing, Open Climb, and Try a Climb classes throughout the day, crate stacking (with prizes for winners), buddy boulder, giveaways, a silent auction, and refreshments.

First Saturday
Where: National Gallery of Art | National Mall, DC
When: Saturday, 11am – 3pm
Admission: Free

Kick off the new year with a day of mindfulness and art at the museum’s monthly family program! Experience a guided meditation surrounded by the transcendental color field paintings of Mark Rothko. Take little ones to storytime and for fun in the atrium play space. You can also watch kid-friendly short films, experiment with color at Drop-In Art Making, dive into books in the library, and more! All activities are free, and most are first come, first served. See the website for the day’s schedule.

Weekend Workshops
Where: National Portrait Gallery | Penn Quarter, DC
When: Saturday & Sunday, 12-3pm
Admission: Free

Drop in at the National Portrait Gallery to do some art making! All ages are welcome to get creative at Weekend Workshops. Learn about artists and changemakers, then create art inspired by their stories. Of course, explore the whole museum while you’re there. See more about the National Portrait Gallery here.

Disney’s Frozen

The Tony Award–nominated Broadway musical is now on tour across North America. Frozen features the songs you know and love from the original film, plus an expanded score with a dozen new numbers by the film’s songwriters. It’s everything you want in a musical: It’s moving. It’s spectacular. And above all, it’s pure Broadway joy. Recommended for ages 6+.

Jungle Discovery

Bring kiddos to this engaging and immersive interactive experience for children ages 3-6 and their adults. Participants enter a fantastical jungle world where they may dress up as exotic creatures and explore the beautiful flora and fauna. Led by Jungle Guides, participants may choose to play in the jungle leaves, add flowers, play with sound using a rain stick, draw on the Mirror Mural, and make a warm nest to hide in. There will be plenty of fun surprises in this multi-sensory environment.

A Year with Frog and Toad

It’s the final weekend to enjoy this musical celebration of friendship! In this hit Broadway musical, two best friends with opposite personalities wake up from hibernation and enjoy hilarious adventures through the seasons. Light-hearted, with a sprinkle of nostalgia, this show is inspired by the acclaimed children’s books.

The Lion, the Witch , and the Wardrobe

It’s also the last chance to see this two-person version of the classic tale, where Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy discover a secret portal to a magical world called Narnia. With an evil White Witch ruling the kingdom, can Lucy, her new friend Mr. Tumnus, and her family band together to save this land from the eternal winter?

Fun at Fairfax Parks

The Fairfax County Park Authority hosts all kinds of events on weekends for guests of all ages.  Join an evening campfire at Burke Lake Park.  Do some beginner birding at Hidden Oaks Nature Center (ages 12+).  Learn how to build a fire at Riverbend Park. Park it in MoCo
Where: MoCo Parks | Montgomery County, MD

Montgomery Parks also presents loads of special activities for visitors of all ages. Do some Family Nature Art at Brookside Nature Center.  Join a park clean up at a couple of locations.  Enjoy a birding event for families with Black Hill Nature Programs.  Find details on these activities and more!

Moonshot Studio
Where: The REACH | Kennedy Center
When: Saturday & Sunday, 11am – 4:30pm
Admission: Free

Get creative at this studio within The REACH at the Kennedy Center, where all are groups are welcome and encouraged to partake in various art projects and activities. The recommended age is 5 years old and above, but anyone can join. Stop by anytime from 11am – 4pm on (most) Saturdays & Sundays for art adventures.

Winter Hikes

There should be sunshine at least one day this weekend, so plan for some time on the trail. Tramp in places with scenic views, hike and explore history at interesting locales, and enjoy a day of active fun. This post has a a bunch of recommendations for good walks in the woods with the kids.  Some specific recs for right now:  Roosevelt Island is always a neat locale to explore; head out to Harpers Ferry for hiking and history; walk in the woods at Pohick Bay  or Fountainhead Regional Parks; or tramp in the city at Rock Creek Park.

Recreation on Ice
Where: Ice skating rinks around the DC area
When: Throughout the weekend

Glide under the sky and stars — or indoors if that’s your preference.  Take in art as you skate at the Sculpture Garden.  Glide over the Potomac on The Wharf’s awesome rink. Circle around Washington Harbour as you enjoy river views. Meander along the Figure 8 path at Canal Park. Do some shopping then skate at Pentagon Row, Rockville Town Square, or Reston Town Center. Or head to an ice arena for some skating out of the elements.  This post has details on alfresco and indoor ice skating options in the area.

Nature Calling

If you want to get a dose of the outside world in the comfort of the indoors head to a nature center. There are several great ones around the area that offer engaging exhibits, including live creatures. Buddie Ford Nature Center in Alexandria, Watkins in Upper Marlboro, Potomac Overlook in Arlington, Long Branch in Falls Church, and Brookside in Silver Spring all make for a great outing.

Wizards vs Knicks

When: Friday, 7pm

The Wizards are playing at home on Saturday evening — watch them work some on-court magic against the Knicks. Plan on a pre-game dinner in Penn Quarter — there are plenty of family-friendly places to go in the neighborhood. Cap It

For sports action on ice, watch the Capitals on Friday evening as they host the Carolina Hurricanes or on Sunday when they play the Los Angeles Kings. Plan on a pre- or post-game meal in Penn Quarter — there are plenty of family-friendly places to go in the neighborhood. Hoops U

With so many universities in the area, there’s always some good college hoops action going on during the season — and it’s always a good time for families. Here are some games to catch this weekend:

* George Mason men vs Saint Louis on Saturday at 2pm
* Maryland women vs Purdue on Saturday at 4:30pm

King Bullfrog Family Concert
Where: Hook Hall | Petworth, DC
When: Sunday, 10am – 12pm
Admission: $5

Bring the kiddos for some dancing and singing with King Bullfrog at Hook Hall on Sunday.  They’ll have coffee and drinks available for purchase for the parents, plus kid-friendly breakfast and snacks available for everyone while you enjoy the entertainment. Proceeds from the show benefit DC Action.

Model Rocket Launch
Where: Goddard Space Flight Center | Greenbelt, MD
When: Sunday, 1-2pm
Admission: Free

Join the monthly model rocket launch at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Anyone is welcome, and if you’ve got a model rocket to fly, bring it along (though there are some restrictions – see them here). The program takes place the first Sunday of every month at 1pm.
