Make Summer ‘Sew’ Fun with Camp at Three Little Birds Sewing Co.

The school year is winding down, and summer fun is about to begin! If you’re still looking for activities for your kids, either last minute or later in the season, here is a great one to consider — especially for budding fashionistas or kids who just love creative, hands-on pursuits.

Starting June 18, Three Little Birds Sewing Co. is offering week-long summer camps for kids ages 8-16. During the sessions, students will learn how to sew by both machine and hand, while making tote bags, quilts, garments, and everything in between!

All sessions are available as a either a half-day (9am – 12:30pm) or full-day (9am – 4pm), and discounted rates are available for siblings and multiple week sign-ups. Camp will be taught by Naomi, a D.C. elementary school teacher, and 3LB owner, Kate.

Camp sessions will be held the following weeks — note that age ranges vary for each:

Week 1: June 18 – June 22
Week 2: June 25 – June 29
Week 3: July 9 – July 13
Week 4: July 23 – July 27
Week 5: August 6 – August 10
Week 6: August 13 – August 17
*During camp off-weeks, their popular One Day Workshops (9am – 1pm) will be offered.

There is a limit of 8 campers for each session, so register soon! Use code SIBLING05 for siblings attending the same session. And if you’re interested in a single-day session, email threelittlebirds.sewingco@gmail.com.

Three Little Birds Sewing Co. is located in the Gateway Arts District in Hyattsville, MD. Read more about their camps and other offerings here.

Totes cute 🙂

Back when I was in middle school (like when dinosaurs roamed the earth, according to my kids), Home Ec was among the electives we could take in school, and I chose it as one of mine. In these modern days of STEAM, it seems kind of old-fashioned, but I actually really enjoyed the hands-on lessons of the class, especially a sewing project where I made my own pair of shorts. It was quite satisfying to make something myself that was useful — and, of course, cute to wear!

Kids may not have the same opportunities to learn sewing in school anymore, but they can develop their stitching skills with shops like Three Little Birds Sewing Co. Located in the Arts District of Hyattsville, MD, the sewing studio and fabric store offers a variety of classes and workshops for all ages along with a great selection of textiles for sale.

Several class options (and more) are available:
* Introductory to Sewing for ages 7 is a 1.5-hour class that lets them get hands on experience with the basics of machine sewing. They learn everything from how to turn on the machine to finishing a simple project.
* Mommy & Me Sewing Class is a 1.5-hour session for ages 5-12 and an adult. Together you’ll learn how to operate a sewing machine and make a standard pillowcase. If time allows, you can make a second matching one!
* Kids Sewing Series for ages 8-14 takes place over four 1.5-hour sessions and gives students the confidence and skills to learn to sew on their own. All skill levels are welcome — the three class projects are adjusted to each student.
* Adult classes teach everything from the basics of sewing and quilting to more specialized work like zippers and fancier totes and Christmas ornaments.
* Other offerings include studio time, birthday parties, and baby showers!
