What’s up this Weekend

By now you already know about some of the great events going on this weekend, and there’s even more to do that the whole family will enjoy. Here’s a quick review of previously posted ideas, and a few new ones to boot. Happy Weekend!

The Cherry Blossom Festival kicks off this weekend with a Family Day and Opening Ceremony at the National Building Museum.

The 44th Annual Smithsonian Kite Festival will have spirits soaring at the Washington Monument grounds on Saturday.

Start your Easter celebration early at Bunnyland, the Butler’s Orchard annual spring festival.

Another Easter event is the 2nd Annual Easter Egg Roll at Woodrow Wilson House. From 1pm -4 pm, kids can meet the Easter Bunny, enjoy fun and games in the garden, and participate in a treasure hunt in the new exhibition, “My Third Leg: Woodrow Wilson’s Walking Sticks.” Adults pay the regular admission of $7.50, children under 7 are free, $3 for students.

On Sunday, the Del Ray Easter Egg Hunt will take place along the block of Mount Vernon Avenue bounded by E. Howell and E. Winsdor Streets. Kids will have a ball searching for over 2,000 hidden eggs containing chocolates, tickets for prizes, and doggie treats. The grand prize egg hunter will receive a 26-inch chocolate bunny from ACKC. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

“How to Train Your Dragon” opens in theaters today. The IMAX 3D flick is getting good reviews for both its adventurous tale and dazzling computer animation. It has a PG rating, so you might want to check out reviews before bringing the wee ones.

It Isn’t Just for Breakfast Anymore

I’m going to file this one under “Special Treat if You’re Realllly Good and Listen to Mommy Allll Day.” A new eatery just opened in Cleveland Park, and while it’s likely to be family-friendly and a huge hit with kids, it probably won’t be your go-to place for a healthy meal. But, sometimes, that’s the whole point.

This sweet nirvana is The Cereal Bowl, a café that bases its entire menu on—you guessed it—cereal. With nearly 30 kinds of cereal and even more toppings, the bowl possibilities are practically endless. And there’s no pressure to come up with your own personal blend if you don’t want to; these guys have already done their mixing and created signature combos that sound like something I would have given up my Super Hair Barbie for back in the day. The Sweetest Thing is a concoction of Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, Vanilla Wafers, and rainbow sprinkles. Then there’s Gimme S’more, a mix of Golden Grahams, Cocoa Puffs, Marshmallow Graham Bites, and chocolate chips. You get the idea.

But all hope of good nutrition is not lost—they also serve oatmeal, which can be topped with fruit, nuts, and/or granola. And their Beyond the Bowl selections include parfaits, oatmeal smoothies, and frozen yogurt (cereal flavored, of course).

The soft opening is this week; the grand opening is Saturday from 10am – 1pm.

The Cereal Bowl
3420 Connecticut Ave. NW
Mon – Thurs: 6:30am – 10pm
Fri: 6:30am – 11pm
Sat: 7am – 11pm
Sun: 7am – 8pm
