It’s always a thrill for kids to see their favorite stories come to life in live productions. Even better when there’s the bonus of an exciting performance on ice! And that’s just what the Gardens Figure Skating Club’s ninth annual spring show promises audiences in a couple of weeks when they present Mary Poppins on Ice.
The show is a figure skating portrayal of a magical nanny who skates with her umbrella into an English household to care for rambunctious children and to teach the entire family that they love and need each other. Featuring over 60 skaters performing to music from the 1964 Disney musical and the ongoing theater adaptation based on the children’s book series by P.L. Travers, the cast includes local skaters from age 4 to adult, integrating skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced, creating a visually exciting theatrical experience.
This is an entertaining way to experience the magic and artistry of figure skating. Many of the skaters compete in the U.S. Figure Skating system including national level artistic, theater on ice, and synchronized skating competitions.
Four performances of Mary Poppins on Ice will take place at the Gardens Ice House Patrick Arena shows: Saturday, March 23 at 1pm and 3:30pm and Sunday, March 24 at 1pm and 3:30pm. Tickets are on sale at the Gardens Ice House — $10 for general admission with a limited number of special reserved seats available for $15. General admission tickets are also available online for $11. Groups of 10 or more may purchase general admission tickets for $8 per person by inquiring through gfsc.ticketbooth@gmail.com. Under age 3 admitted free. The arena is located at 3800 Old Gunpowder Road in Laurel, MD.
