Five Things for Today: March 11, 2021

1. The current forecast calls for bike riding!  Whether you get out for a spin today or plan for a family ride this weekend, check out this round-up of routes to ride around the area, with something for everyone.  This particular stretch is ideal with little bikers.

2.  In case you missed it a couple of days ago, there’s a new feature on the blog by a new KFDC contributor! Katie Winter, an educator and local mom of two young children, will be offering ideas to “Bring the Fun Home from… ” different places around the area with recommendation for at-home activities that tie in to your visit.  The inaugural post highlights Green Spring Gardens in Alexandria, an ideal place to enjoy the start of spring!

3.  The Washington Nationals and MLB are hosting a Play Ball Drive-Thru on Saturday to encourage and promote youth baseball and softball participation.  From 2-4pm, the Nats and Screech will be giving away free plastic bats, balls, and other Nats swag to young fans. Open to all children between the ages of 4-18, this socially-distant event will allow participants to remain in their cars and have the items passed through their car windows. This will take place at Matthews Memorial Baptist Church in Southeast DC.  Face coverings will be required. Fans should register here.

4. A beautifully written essay about divorce — from the perspective of a teen.

5. The Oprah interview was excellent, but this is much more fun.

Five Things for Today: March 10, 2021

1. You don’t need the water features to be running to enjoy the Yards Park with kids.  Stroll the boardwalk, check out boats at the marina, play in the grassy areas, and get takeout from one of the many eateries there for a riverside picnic.  The location along the water makes it a great place to spend one of these gorgeous 70-degree days!  (And you can find even more options to enjoy them here.)

2.  To celebrate Women’s History Month, Rosie Riveters is launching a family geocaching activity!  Their Women’s History Hunt is in Old Town Alexandria and Northwest Arlington, all you need to do is navigate to the locations and find puzzle pieces that celebrate women in STEM to receive a prize. All ages are invited to participate through March 31.  Follow the link above for the map, info on geocaching, and more details.

3. DC is launching a new pre-registration system for making vaccination appointments today — more info here. (Honestly, I still find it a bit confusing).

4. Stories from a year of Covid.

5. Can’t not smile watching this, and this, and this.  (Okay, all of them.)

Five Things for Today: March 9, 2021

1. You may have been to the Fort Dupont Ice rink in Southeast DC, but did you know there’s a park with great hiking and biking trails nearby?  We went to Fort Dupont Park past weekend and enjoyed a nice nature break right in the city.  We parked at the Fort Circle Park lot close to the Summer Theater (where seasonal entertainment is presented), then followed a paved path to a trail through the woods for an out and back about three miles total. Admission is free.   (And for more local hikes, see this KFDC post — it’s a perfect day for one!)

2. It’s a good day to bring little ones to play at Clemyjontri, the sprawling playground in McLean.  Hours are 7am – dusk.  Admission is free.

3.  18 books that capture the spirit and essence of living in DC.

4. This Roasted Greek Salad is kind of like a healthier version of the very viral baked feta pasta.  Some similar elements, plus more veggies and minus the carbs.  We made it last week, and it was delicious!

5. WFH life.

Five Things for Today: March 8, 2021

1. Happy International Women’s Day! There are some great ways to celebrate today — and everyday, for that matter. Visit the just reopened National Museum of Women in the Arts, go to a park named for a woman history-maker, tour old fire call boxes commemorating notable women, shop female-owned businesses, or enjoy food from women-owned restaurants,

2. Frying Pan Farm Park in Herndon, VA, is always a hit with little ones.  They can visit animals, play on kid-sized tractors and playgrounds, and much more as they get a glimpse of 20th century farm life. The park is open daily from dawn to dusk, the farm is open 9am – 5pm. Admission is free, though there may be a fee for some activities. (PS: Find more places to hang outside on this nice day!)

3. Want to savor exclusive dishes from some of DC’s best restaurants while helping support them?  The  Summerlong Supper Club is a 100% charitable dinner program designed to do one — make sure our favorite restaurants are still here come summer. It works like this:  From April 6 to May 13, you receive one dinner per week from a different restaurant every week, for a total of six dinners over six weeks. Each dinner is priced at $60 for a 3-course meal and feeds one person (app, main, dessert) – tip included, sales tax not included.  You can purchase all meals up front, or pay for them on a weekly basis (though you must commit to all six weeks), and there is a $7 delivery charge.  Memberships are open for purchase until April 4.

4.  In case you missed it last night, here is a recap of the big interview.

5.  This is so great. (I hope Owen is paying attention! 😉)
