Five Things for Today: September 1, 2020

Hiking a section of closed-on-weekends Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park

1. Have you hit the trail at Rock Creek Park lately? We just did on Sunday, and enjoyed a great hike along with the awesome weather. We parked in a small lot not too far from the Nature Center and hopped on the Western Ridge Trail. We followed it past the Horse Center, then just wound our way through the woods and along part of Beach Drive (it’s closed on weekends) for a nice five miles. It’s so green and lush right now, even on hot days there is plenty of shade. Other good starting points are at the Nature Center or Peirce Mill. You can follow the links to read more about both places, though they are currently closed.

2. Looking for a summer last hurrah for the kids (and/or you) or a cool way to celebrate the start of distance learning? Trapeze School New York-DC will be offering drop in classes again on weekends starting this Saturday. They will be outdoors only with a limited number of participants, and cost is $65. Read more about the venture in this KFDC post.

3. Filing this under “Keep in Mind for Special Occasion” (or maybe just to make any old day special):  The Willard Continental is now offering Afternoon Tea To Go, and it sounds so lovely and decadent and like a perfect uplifter right now.

4. A ranking of the best laptops for kids in elementary school and beyond. (PS: Amazon has refurbished laptops.)

5. Recent sports protests in photos.  And one more.

Five Things for Today: August 31, 2020

1. Happy First Day to DCPS students!  As mentioned last week, KFDC is teaming up with The Hill is Home to celebrate Back to School and make the start of this unusual year a little more fun.  We want to see your first-day photos!  Show off pandemic gear, online learning set ups, or whatever you’re doing to adapt to these new school circumstances.  Through September 14, anyone heading back to school — students, teachers, staff — can submit their pics via IG by using the hashtag #BTS💛KFDCxTHIH and tagging @kidfriendlydc and @thehillishome for a chance to be featured by us.

2. Today is Family Day on North Capitol Main Street!  The community has a whole itinerary of activities for parents and kids can do in the neighborhood.  It’s the first of  five “experience days” that will launch weekly through September 28.  Other themes are Self-Care Day on 9/7, Hidden Gems on 9/14,  Black Owned Businesses on 9/21, and Date Day on 9/28.

3. It’s National Eat Outside Day, and Ballston Quarter is celebrating with music and giveaways.  Check out all their dining options here to make plans for an al fresco meal.

4.  Recently bought this kit for Sasha, and we’ve been having a blast making everything from T-shirts to masks more colorful and fun.

5.  What a great neighbor!
