Five Things for Today: August 30

A paddle boarder on the Potomac seen from the Capital Crescent Trail

1. How about combining a couple of outdoor activities to take advantage of the nice weather?  Bike the Capital Crescent Trail along the C&O Canal from Georgetown to Fletcher’s Cove, then rent canoes, kayaks, or paddle boards for some fun on the river (or you can just do one or the other).  And, of course, you can start the bike ride farther out or extend it down the trail.  See more about the venture in this old KFDC post and this more recent one.

2.  If you prefer to stay on land on foot, Woodend Nature Sanctuary in Chevy Chase, MD,  is a lovely place for nature walks with kids.  The grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk, and admission is free.

3.  With kids distance learning this fall, we’re going to be eating a lot of lunches at home, so here are some ideas that sound good for little palates — and big ones, too.

A peek into the Moongate Garden at the Smithsonian’s Enid A. Haupt Garden

1. The Enid A. Haupt Garden,  the grounds behind the Smithsonian Castle, have reopened.  It’s a lovely place to stroll around and there are some neat little side areas to explore, like the Moongate Garden adjacent to the Freer|Sackler and the Fountain Garden next to the National Museum of African Art.  It’s open daily from dawn to dusk.   And you can extend your National Mall garden ventures with a walk through the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden and the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden across the way.)

2. It’s Independent Bookstore Day, a great reason to shop and support some of the best book shops around.  Here are quick link to some local spots for online and/or in-person purchasing:
Loyalty Books
Busboys and Poets
Kramerbooks
Solid State Books
Capitol Hill Books
East City Bookshop
Politics and Prose
Hooray for Books

Five Things for Today: August 27, 2020

The quite remarkable Ida B. Well mosaic at Union Station

1.  You can play tourist in your own town on a Big Bus sightseeing tour.  It’s an activity you might not have thought to do otherwise, but it’s accessible now, in fresh air on the top deck,  and enhanced hygiene and social distancing measures are in place.  Catch unique views of DC’s iconic sights while listening to commentary and history about them.  And you can hop on and off as you want to explore places more closely.  (PS: Be sure to hop off at Union Station to see the amazing 1,000-foot mosaic of Ida B. Wells, there through Friday to celebrate 100 years of women’s suffrage.  Even if you don’t take a bus tour, I recommend going to see it!)

2. Even more reason to love the Maryland Renaissance Festival… Since the IRL event at Revel Grove had to be canceled due to COVID, it’s gone virtual instead, with a website full of merriment.  Find links to the amazing variety of Ren Fest entertainment and shops (then just grab a giant turkey leg and pour a cold cider, and it’s the next best thing to being there).  Huzzah!

3. Safeway stores are offering free flu shots with most insurance, plus you get 10% off your next grocery purchase with immunization.

4. Have you checked out Groupon lately? There are some good deals on local restaurants and activities, and the offer for a Costco membership is running through September 1 (be sure to read qualifications for that one).

5.  An old, but sadly still relevant article from The Onion.

Five Things for Today: August 26, 2020

Exploring the shoreline at Mason Neck State Park

1.  A great place for family hikes and other outdoor activities: Mason Neck State Park in Fairfax. We visited this past weekend for a walk in the woods, along the boardwalks elevated over wetlands, and on small beach areas.  It’s located on a peninsula, so paddling options are available, and we saw people swimming and wading in some areas. There are also wildlife sightings, a playground, a paved path for biking, and nice picnic spots.  Hours are 8am – 9pm, and admission is $7/car on weekdays, $10 on weekends.

2. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, take a virtual tour of the National Geographic Museum’s exhibition, Women: A Century of Change.

3. Starting today through September 1, the National Gallery of Art has 12 short films from the Thomas Edison Media Arts Consortium’s international film fest available for free viewing.

4. We’ll have an opportunity to go to Nationals Park this year, after all — an important one!

5.  An NBA playoff pregame interview worth a watch.
