Explore the history of voting in the U.S. at the American History Museum

1. It’s a great time to visit the National Museum of American History with the kids!  Exhibitions like American Democracy that includes a history of voting in the U.S. and Many Voices, One Nation that highlights how our voices shape our country, make an outing there is especially relevant now.  Of course, plan to tour the rest of the exhibits, too.  The museum is open Friday – Tuesday, 11am – 4pm, and free timed-entry passes are required.  (For more inside outings, check out the list of indoor places that are open now.  And find recommendations especially for little kids here.)

2. In case you missed them, there are a couple of new KFDC write-ups:  Read about of Crystalline at ARTECHOUSE and an ideal bike ride with kids.

3. Guidelines for trick-or-treating in the DMV area.

4. Kiwi Co, the monthly enrichment subscription box service, has a sale going on right now. Through November 2, get 50% off the first month of any subscription line with the code SPOOKY50 at checkout!

5. Tenacious D does the Time Warp with a bunch of special guests to Rock-y the vote. 🙌

PS: Be sure to make a plan to VOTE — and get the kids involved so they can experience democracy in action!

Five Things for Today: October 28, 2020

A flag for every life lost to Covid-19 in the U.S.

1. On the expanse of grass in front of the DC Armory and RFK Stadium, over 227,000 white flags have been planted, one  for every life lost to Covid-19 in the U.S. — and more are being added every day.  “In America, How Could This Happen” was created by Bethesda-based artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg, and it’s being updated with the help of visitors who volunteer.  The sight is staggering, to say the least.  It’s free and open to visit,  or you can watch a live feed of the installation here. And view more pics from our visit last Friday when the number was just over 223,000.  By now, you’ve likely had a conversation with the kids about the many deaths caused by Covid, but if not, be prepared to if you bring them. (PS:  The playground at RFK Fields is very close, as is Kingman Island for other nearby activities.)

2. Rockville Recreation & Parks is hosting a Halloween Sweet Treats “Drive-Thru” on Saturday, October 31, for a fun and safe way to trick-or-treat.  Taking place at Glenview Mansion, you can collect yummy treats and craft at fun stations throughout the parking lot. Families are encouraged to decorate the car in the Halloween spirit — you could win a prize!  Space is limited, so registration is required.

3. The Baltimore Museum of Art has reopened.  Some galleries remain closed, but there are plenty accessible to warrant a visit.  Hours are 10am – 5pm Wednesday – Sunday, and timed entry passes are required.

4. Currently absorbed by Caste. Who else has read it?

5. Another riveting series from Humans of New York. (The first of eight parts; access the rest here.)

1. Early in-person voting in DC begins today!  Voting Centers are located in all eight wards, and will be open 8:30am – 7pm through November 2, and 7am – 8pm on Election Day, November 3.  You can still cast your ballot by mail, too — Ballot Drop Boxes are available in locations around the city through November 3.

Early in-person voting in Maryland began yesterday and continues through November 2. Early Voting Centers are open 7am – 8pm. (A list of Election Day Voting Centers is available here.). Mail-in ballots had to be requested by October 20, and more instructions for voting by mail in Maryland are available here.

Early in-person voting in Virginia began September 18 and continues through October 31.  Voting Centers will be open again on Election Day.  Mail-in ballots had to be requested by October 18. Submit your address here to find out where to vote in person or drop off your mail-in vote.

2. Annmarie Sculpture Garden has extended their Halloween in the Garden event and are welcoming visitors through November 1 for a self-guided experience. Wear your costume and stop by the front desk to say trick or treat — they’ll have treats for sure.  You can also find fun photo opps throughout the park, complete a corn maze, make a bat fly, try the spider toss, make a scarecrow, and grab an ArtLAB to-go kit.   And on your walk through the beautiful garden, enjoy the Ode to Autumn activities too. Read (and see) more about Annmarie here and here.

3. Tomorrow, October 28, join a virtual story time with Jane Goodall at 12pm, when she will share a reading of Lion Family.  A live Q & A will follow, and Jane will be answering audience-submitted questions. The event will take place on Facebook Live.

4. The National Building Museum Shop is reopening for in-person visits to members starting today.  Hours are 11am – 2pm Tuesday – Thursday. Use the 4th Street NW loading dock entrance, and bring proper ID.  The shop will open to the general public on November 19, but in the meantime the online shop is always open for business.

5. First, listen to yesterday’s great episode of The Daily.  Then, watch this.
