2. Tune in to the Kojo Namdi Show today at 12:30pm for the Kojo For Kids segment as bestselling YA author Jason Reynolds talks about racism and the protests. (The Kojo show starts at 12pm, but the segment begins a 12:30pm.)

3. The annual Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle won’t be taking place on the National Mall this summer, but you can experience it virtually starting today through June 30, with cooking contests, cooking demonstrations, award-winning recipes, three music “stages,” children’s activities, prizes, giveaways, and more.

A timely message of hope seen on a neighborhood walk

1. Today at 5pm, the Kennedy Center presents The Yo-Yo Mo Show: An Evening of Musical Doodling. All ages are invited to grab some paper and doodling implements and join Mo Willems in doodling as Yo-Yo Ma plays cello to explore ways in which different art forms can inspire each other. Get a glimpse of what to expect here.

2. Many Virginia wineries have reopened, welcoming guests to enjoy their outdoor spaces along with tastings. Most are BYO picnics, and some are even family friendly. Find a list of wineries and more details here. And if you plan to try going, I recommend calling ahead to confirm the status, even if reservations are not required.

3. This evening at 8pm, tune in to Smithsonian’s Project Pride, a virtual concert and digital time capsule celebration of LGBTQ+ Heritage, Culture, and History featuring LGBTQ+ musicians, artists, and allies, as well as highlights from the Smithsonian collections.

Five Things for Today: May 30, 2020

Enjoy a day on the water

1. Recreation on local waterways is an outdoor option again. Boating in DC is renting kayaks and stand up paddleboards at Thompson Boat Center and The Wharf by reservation only — availability for this weekend is very limited, but you can get on a wait list in case of cancellations. NoVa Parks have also opened boat rentals, though some facilities may be limited or closed, so be sure to confirm it’s open at the location you plan to visit.

2. If you can’t get on the water, you can still enjoy a nice day by it at The Yards Park, the lovely space on the Anacostia, which has reopened. The water features are not on, but you can hang out in the grassy areas, stroll the boardwalk, and maybe even pick up a food for a picnic (or dine on a patio if you’re ready) from one of the nearby eateries. Just be sure to heed these social distancing rules. (And if you’re worried about crowds there, check out these walks in the woods for places to get outdoors with more space.)

Five Things for Today: May 29, 2020

Empty streets of Downtown DC…when will they start filling up again?

1. Phase 1 of reopening DC includes restaurants offering socially distanced outdoor dining. If you’re ready for it, Eater has a running list of places you can go for an al fresco meal or drinks.

2. Kids and teens can work on projects that focus on service learning, the practice of connecting core SEL (social-emotional learning) concepts to actions that serve others, with Project Tie-Dye. The subscription service founded by two local moms delivers a new kit each month with all the supplies needed to complete service-learning projects that are thoughtfully designed and fun for kids to do.

3. If you’ve been cleaning out closets and drawers during your time at home and need somewhere for all the “give away” clothes to go, check out thredUP. You can send in clothes and shoes for donation or consignment, plus you can shop the website. There are some great finds and deals to be had! And if, like me, you enjoy secondhand shopping and are missing your local places for thrifting, thredUP can help fill that void. 4. ‘Tis the season (and circumstances) for park picnics and backyard barbecues, a great time to try some new side dishes.

Five Things for Today: May 28, 2020

A little pop of yellow in nature

1. It’s official: DC begins Phase 1 of reopening tomorrow, May 29. The Washington Post has details on what this entails along with more info on Maryland and Northern Virginia’s reopenings.

2. Little ones can go on a virtual outdoor adventure with a FONZ Educational Specialist in a series of videos from the National Zoo. The latest one explores the color yellow in nature. (PS: These also provide inspo for IRL nature walks with kiddos!)

3. For parents interested in Hebrew School for their kids, here is a great way to keep them learning and maybe even trying a new language as they finish up school: Hebrew School To You continues to offer engaging, customized private and group sessions for kids and adults in Judaics and Hebrew Language. With COVID-19, classes have gone virtual and you can start at any time, even throughout the summer. (They can also help with Bar/Bat Mitzvah prep!)

4. Shop a trove of unique art, goods, and wares and support a local business! Steadfast Supply has locations at The Yards in DC and Ballston Quarter in NoVa, but the store has gone online during this time. You can find all kinds of items from independent brands and designers that would make perfect gifts for the people you miss, fun things for the family, or even a nice treat for yourself.
