Where to Celebrate Independence Day Around DC

What better place to celebrate Independence Day than in our nation’s capital? This is where the actual Declaration of Independence is housed (and will be read!), and celebrations take place among some of the country’s most iconic landmarks. But the excitement doesn’t stop there. From fireworks on the National Mall and concerts at the Capitol to special events at George Washington’s house to neighborhood parades and ballpark fun, there are loads of ways to revel on July 4th and the days leading up to it. Here are details on a bunch of them. Happy Independence Day!

Family Independence Day Funfest
Where: Tudor Place | Georgetown, DC
When: Saturday, 10am – 12pm
Admission: $7-10/child $5/adult, free/veterans & military families

Celebrate Independence Day with the family at the home of Martha Washington’s granddaughter and five generations that followed. Salute our nation’s service members! Also play traditional American outdoor games, tour verdant garden “rooms,” make patriotic crafts like a traditional whirligig toy, and of course, savor patriotic sweets. All ages welcome.

National Independence Day Parade
Where: Constitution Avenue NW, 7th-17th Streets | DC
When: July 4, 11:45am

Many national holidays get a parade in DC, and July 4th is no exception. Scores of spectators are expected to line the Constitution Avenue sidewalks to watch the procession celebrating Independence Day make its way from 7th to 17th Streets. Marching bands, floats, giant balloons, equestrian groups, drill teams, and military units will be among the pageantry. Stake out your spot along the route early, as this event attracts hundreds of thousands of viewers every year.

Independence Day Celebration on the Mall
Where: National Mall, DC
When: July 4, all day (and evening)
Admission: Free

After the parade (even earlier for some), the National Mall will begin filling up for a day of July 4th festivities — the Smithsonian Folklife Festival from 7th to 12th Streets, Junior Ranger activities, concerts, and more. And the grand finale of it all: At 9:09pm, the sky above will explode with color when the amazing iconic fireworks display. A Capitol Fourth
Where: West Lawn on the Capitol | Capitol Hill, DC
When: July 4, 8pm; gates open at 3pm
Admission: Free

Down past the other end of the Mall, A Capitol Fourth, the annual Independence Day concert that airs live on PBS, will feature even more musical pageantry. This year’s show, hosted by John Stamps, will include performances by The Beach Boys, The Four Tops, Kellie Pickler, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Choral Arts Society of Washington, the U.S. Army Ceremonial Band, and many more exciting acts. An American Celebration
Where: Mount Vernon | Mount Vernon, VA
When: July 4, 9am – 5pm
Admission: $20/adults, $10/ages 6-11, free for ages 5 and under.

The home of George Washington salutes the first commander-in-chief with a dazzling display of made-for-daytime fireworks during its annual Independence Day event. Visitors will be treated to spectacular smoke fireworks in patriotic colors fired over the Potomac River. The event also includes an inspirational naturalization ceremony for 100 new citizens, military reenactments, a special wreathlaying ceremony, and a visit from the “first” first couple, “General and Mrs. Washington.” See the full schedule of events here.

Fourth of July at the National Archives

Celebrate July 4th at the National Archives Building with a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence. There will also be historical guests, patriotic music, and family activities from 11am – 4pm. The full schedule of events is available on the National Archives website.

A day at the ballpark is about as all-American as it gets when it comes to sports, and you can experience it and celebrate the holiday at Nationals Park. Kick off Independence Day on July 3rd, when the Nats play the Mets and enjoy a freedom fireworks show after. The July 4th game against the Mets will also include an aerial appearance by the Golden Knights Parachute Team and a performance by The Rockettes! Falls Church 4th of July Celebration
Where: George Mason High School | Fairfax, VA
When: July 4, 7pm
Admission: Free

The City of Falls Church Recreation and Parks Department will present its annual free July 4th Celebration at George Mason High School (7124 Leesburg Pike). Musical entertainment begins at 7pm with a live performance, with fireworks following at 9:20pm. Blankets and flat-based chairs are allowed for seating on the field. Food and drinks will be sold on site.

Star-Spangled Spectacular
Where: Oregon Ridge State Park | Cockeysville, MD
When: July 3
Admission: $9-20

For something a little different than the usual DC July 4th festivities, head north to Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, MD, on Monday. You can spread out a blanket or set up chairs on the sloping green lawn amidst a gorgeous setting as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performs their Star-Spangled Spectacular, culminating with a magnificent fireworks display. The starbursts in the sky as a live symphony plays is truly magical. The park opens at 5pm, and the show begins at 8pm both days. Be sure to note these parking instructions, as on–site parking is $15, but you can park off site and take a shuttle for free.

July 4th @ Long Bridge Park
Where: Long Bridge Park | Arlington, VA
When: July 4, 5-10pm
Admission: Free

Celebrate Independence Day at Arlington’s sixth annual July 4th Celebration @ Long Bridge Park! Join in the patriotic spirit with food trucks, live music featuring Jeff From Accounting, sports and games for all ages, moon bounces (weather permitting), face painting, and great views of the DC fireworks display. Free shuttles from Pentagon City and Crystal City metro stations.

McLean 4th of July Fireworks
Where: Churchill Road Elementary School | McLean, VA
When: July 4
Admission: Free

McLean’s annual Independence Day Celebration returns to Churchill Road Elementary School. The fireworks show begins at sunset, approximately 9:15pm. In addition to the large fireworks display, patrons can come early to enjoy musical entertainment by a local disc jockey, as well as food trucks selling a variety of entrees and snacks.

Picnic Baskets to Celebrate

More like a how to celebrate than a where, Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken is offering a special summer picnic basket at their DC and Virginia locations. The basket includes 8 pieces of their signature fried chicken, 4 biscuits, 1 large cole slaw, and a half dozen doughnuts, and feeds up to four people. It will be available for pick up on July 4 from 7:30am – 5:30pm at G Street and from 7:30am -8pm at Falls Church. Th Building Museum’s big summer exhibit opens this weekend. Floating sculptures, an environmental narrative, interactive features, and shaved ice treats make ICEBERGS pretty cool to experience. While you probably won’t stay and play for hours like you did at The BEACH last year, it’s definitely worth checking out. Plus, the admission fee gets you into all of the other NMB exhibits, too! Cost is $5/youth member, $10/adult member and $13/youth non-member, $16/adult non-member.

Nats vs. Reds

Cinncinatti comes to DC, as the Nats host the Reds all weekend. On the first Saturday of each month from 9-10am, join Master Naturalists for a nature hike around Woodend Sanctuary. Each outing will have a unique and exciting natural history theme that’s appropriate for family members of all ages. Be prepared to hike in sneakers and don’t forget your water bottle. Meet at the amphitheater by the main house.

Kids Free – Summer Fun Deal

Take advantage of the Newseum’s annual program that welcomes youth visitors for free during the summer, from July 1 through Labor Day. The Summer Fun Deal waives the regular $13.95 entrance fee for kids with one paid adult admission. The deal benefits kids ages 7 and up most, since children 6 and under always get in free, and much of the Newseum’s collection will be better appreciated by older children.

The much-anticipated Big Maze opens today at the Building Museum! The large-scale labyrinth looming 18 feet high and measuring 60 feet by 60 feet boasts a series of twists and turns for visitors to weave through and explore. After you find your way out, be sure to get a “bird’s eye” view from the balconies of the 2nd and 3rd floors.

Joys of Summer

The monthly outdoor community market will be celebrating July 4th weekend with a Summer Cookout Party, featuring BBQ from Kingston Seoul, locally-made gelato from Dolcezza, and handcrafted root beer from Thunder Beast, plus more! They’ll also have live music from Lady Hatchet, Merry Toddlers More, and DJ Natty Boom hosted by Rock-n-Romp. In addition, No Kings Collective will be doing a live art installation for all to see. And, as always, the market will showcase over 40 local vendors selling fine arts, home décor, handcrafted jewelry, fashion apparel, baby accessories, and prepared foods.

A great way to enjoy the weekend will be on the water, where you can paddle and explore. A bunch of places around the area rent kayaks, canoes, rowboats, and pontoons. Fletcher’s Boathouse is a popular place to go, and we recently rowed from the Ballpark Boathouse at Yards Park. Bladensburg Waterfront Park also has vessels for rent along with free pontoon boat tours on weekends from 5-5:45.

DC Capitol Fair

RFK Stadium’s parking lot will be jam-packed with amusement through July 6 at the DC Capitol Fair. More than 100 rides, games, and attractions will be onsite, among them the Giant Wheel, Super Himalaya, Pirate Ship, and the Extreme. Live entertainment will include the Fearless Flores Circus, a magic and illusion show, hypnotist show, wolf show, lion and tiger show, full petting zoo, and more. All live entertainment and shows are free with fair admission. There will also camel and pony rides for an additional charge. Regular admission to the fair is as low as $4 per person with two-for-one admission discounts available online at www.rfkfair.com. Pay-One-Price unlimited rides wristbands are also available online at a $5-off discount before Friday’s opening. Individual ride tickets can be purchased at the event. Parking is free.

London Nights with Whistler

Explore the impact of gaslights and electricity on nightlife in the nineteenth century. Examine paintings and prints of London by Whistler for content, mood, and technique. In the classroom, use black paper backgrounds, foreground cutouts of people, oil and chalk pastels, and wax gilt to create nightscapes of your favorite outdoor nighttime activities. Recommended for ages 8-14.

Take the kids on a treasure hunt and have a little adventure along the way. Geocaching is a perfect way to be active and enjoy a day outdoors. Whether you search in the city or seek out a destination that requires a hike in the woods, locating the hidden cache will be a thrill for everyone. The USA may be out, but there’s still some of exciting World Cup soccer to see. If you and the kid want to catch some matches with other fútbol fanatics, check out these suggestions for family-friendly places to watch the tournament. They include local restaurants and bars (they welcome kids during the day) as well as outdoor venues hosting special viewing parties.

2012 Independence Day Celebrations

You can’t pick a more quintessential place to celebrate Independence Day than here in the nation’s capital.  And there are so many ways to do so — huge events on the Mall and at the Capitol, family programs at iconic locales, neighborhood parades and gatherings.  This list has details on all of ’em.  Happy Independence Day!

National Independence Day Parade
Where: Constitution Avenue NW, 7th-17th Streets
When: July 4, 11:45am
Admission: Free
Many national holidays get a parade in DC, and July 4th is no exception. Scores of spectators are expected to line the Constitution Avenue sidewalks to watch the procession celebrating Independence Day make its way from 7th to 17th Streets. Marching bands, floats, giant balloons, equestrian groups, drill teams, and military units will be among the pageantry. Stake out your spot along the route early, as this event attracts hundreds of thousands of viewers every year.

Independence Day Celebration on the Mall
Where: National Mall

After the parade (even earlier for some), the National Mall will begin filling up for a day of July 4th festivities—the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Junior Ranger activities, performances, picnics, and the spectacular fireworks display as the grand finale. The music begins at 6pm with a concert on the Washington Monument grounds, which includes performances by the U.S. Army Blues jazz ensemble and Steppin’ Out Live with Ben Vereen. And at 9:10pm, the sky over the Washington Monument will explode with color when the amazing fireworks show begins.

A Capitol Fourth
Where: West Lawn on the Capitol
When: July 4 8pm, gates open at 3pm
Admission: Free
Down past the other end of the Mall, A Capitol Fourth, the annual Independence Day concert that airs live on PBS, will feature even more musical pageantry. Hosted by Tom Bergeron from “Dancing with the Stars,” the show will also feature appearances by Matthew Broderick, Kool and the Gang, Apolo Ohno, the National Symphony Orchestra, and many more exciting performers. Presidential Pursuits
Where: White House Visitor Center
When July 4, 9am – 3pm
Admission: Free
If you have the “liberty” to stop at the White House Visitor Center, you can experience what it would be like to be a “Signer of the Declaration of Independence for a day,” chat with John Adams, test your quill pen writing skills, roll a beeswax candle, and more fun family activities. America’s Pastime
Where: Nationals Park

Admission: Tickets start at $10
A day (or evening) at the ballpark is about as all-American as it gets when it comes to sports, and you can experience it and celebrate the holiday at Nationals Park. Catch the July 3 game against the San Francisco Giants and get treated to a fireworks show after the last out. Or, see the teams match up on the 4th when the Nats don their blue patriotic uniforms as part of the Patriotic Series. (There is also a game on Thursday evening, though there are no holiday-related promos.) Tickets are available for all of the games, and all fans are eligible to take advantage of special ticket offers for the July 4th game – use the code PATRIOTIC when purchasing to access the discounted tickets.

An American Celebration
Where: Mount Vernon

Admission: $15/adults, $7/ages 6-11, free for ages 5 and under.
The home of George Washington salutes the first commander-in-chief with a dazzling display of made-for-daytime fireworks during its annual Independence Day event. Visitors will be treated to spectacular smoke fireworks in patriotic colors fired over the Potomac River. New this year: From 10am – 12pm, costumed staff will provide a glimpse into the making of one of George Washington’s favorite desserts – ice cream! Watch them demo the process as it was done in the 18th century using reproduction period equipment. The event also includes an inspirational naturalization ceremony for 100 new citizens, military reenactments, a special wreathlaying ceremony, and a visit from the “first” first couple, “General and Mrs. Washington.” See the full schedule of events here.

Star-Spangled Spectacular
Where: Oregon Ridge State Park
When: July 3 & 4
Admission: $20/adult, $10/kids 12 and under
For something a little different than the usual DC July 4th festivities, head north to Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, Md, on Tuesday or Wednesday. There, you can spread out a blanket or set up chairs on the sloping green lawn amidst a gorgeous setting as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performs their Star-Spangled Spectacular, culminating with a magnificent fireworks display. The starbursts in the sky as a live symphony plays is truly magical. The park opens at 5pm, and the show begins at 8pm both days. Be sure to note these parking instructions, as on–site parking is $15, but you can park off site and take a shuttle for free.

Reading of the Declaration of Independence
Where: National Archives
When: July 4, 10am – 2pm
Admission: Free
Celebrate July 4th at the National Archives Building with a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence. There will also be historical guests and family activities from 11am – 2pm. The full schedule of events is available on the National Archive’s website. The White House Visitor Center is located near the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets NW, on the north side of the Commerce Department building.

Wax Independent
Where: Madame Tussauds
When: July 4, 8-10am
Admission: $10/ages 13 and up, free for ages 12 and under
The Presidents Gallery at Madame Tussauds is hosting its 1st Annual Celebrate America event, inviting children and families to join wax figures of Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Ben Franklin and other “Founding Fathers” for a fun and educational journey through American history and pop culture. This will include a scavenger hunt, prizes, face painting, music, and a chance to make and take home clay apple pie souvenirs. Incentive to get there early: The first 50 visitors will receive a free slice of good ‘ole American apple pie, and the first 100 will also receive a Buy One Get One Free coupon for hot dogs compliments of Ollie’s Trolley.
