Five Things: July 17, 2023

1. Another big area flower bloom has begun!  The sunflowers at McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area in Poolesville, MD, are peaking.  Even better, it’s free to visit the fields and view the picturesque scene — over 30 acres of brilliant yellow flowers that look like a sea of sunshine smiley face emojis.  We first visited the bloom six summers ago, and back then, it wasn’t very well known. Now, however, the floral sensation is on the collective radar, so be aware there could be a crowd and a lot of traffic getting there, especially if you go on the weekend. But it is quite a sight that the whole gang will appreciate.  More details and photos from a past bloom are on the blog here.  KFDC Tip: If you plan to go, pair it with a PYO blackberries outing at Homestead Farms, which is just minutes away, or stop by Rocklands Farm Winery, also nearby.

2. Big soccer events this week! The Women’s World Cup is about to begin, and the Washington Spirit will be hosting watch parties at the Bullpen and a few other places around the area for the USNWT’s first couple of matches on July 21 and July 26. Also, the MLS All Star match vs Arsenal is this Wednesday, July 19, at Audi Field, and you can still score resale tickets — check for them here. (FYI, prices have gone down since I looked last week.)

3. The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s annual SAAM Arcade is this Saturday, July 22. This is a great event for families, especially if your kids (or you!) are into gaming. The exploration of video games and art showcases games from indie developers and classic arcade games, and this year’s show will highlight music and sound design in video games.  Test out some new games, replay some of the beloved older ones, and get some fresh perspectives on the gaming world. A special Art Quest that connects video games and SAAM’s collections will also be available. See more about the American Art Museum in this KFDC post.

4. Just started watching Quarterbacks on Netflix and find it riveting — and I’m not even into football.  Anyone else?
