Five Things: January 31, 2024

1. Are you ready to celebrate the Year of the Dragon?  A bunch of Lunar New Year events will be happening in DC over the next few weeks.  A few to keep on your radar: The Lunar New Year Family Festival at the National Museum of Asian Art this Saturday (2/3),  the Lunar New Year Family Festival at the National Postal Museum next Saturday (2/10), and the Lunar New Year Family Celebration at the American Art Museum also next Saturday.  And a can’t-miss is the annual Chinese New Year Parade next Sunday (2/11).

2. If you’re looking for a unique show to see with teens, or something fun for a date night or evening out with friends, I highly recommend Mindplay at Arena Stage.

3. Levi and I just dined at the newly opened Pastis, and it was fantastic!

4. For anyone else in the throes of college apps and decisions right now (or anticipating it in the near future), this New York Magazine article will be an interesting read.

5. Prep for Valentine’s Day…  how awesome are these for classmates?  A couple sweet gifts for kids: This book and this heart toy.  And this for significant others.

Get a peek into Alexandria’s past

1. Did you know there’s an archaeology museum in Alexandria?  Located within the Torpedo Factory, the Alexandria Archaeology Museum is a small but interesting space that’s worth a stop if you’re visiting the art center in Old Town. Several exhibits and displays offer insight into Alexandria’s history, many of them letting you handle bits of artifacts and get a close look at objects like pieces of wood from old ships. It’s located on the third floor, and visitors are welcome to pop-in for free. Hours are Tuesday – Friday 11am – 4pm, Saturday 11am – 5pm, and Sunday, 1-5pm.

2. This Friday (a DCPS day off), two awesome local places are partnering for one great experience! Planet Word, the museum all about language, is hosting a performance of Imagination Stage’s New Kid!  After the show, you can visit the galleries to reflect on the ways we use language to connect or divide.  Open to all ages, but best suited for kids in 3rd–5th grades and their families.  Admission is free, but tickets are required — reserve yours now, as they’re bound to go fast!

3.  Big game down the street (well, 45 minutes up I-95) this weekend!  Tickets for the Ravens vs. Chiefs AFC Playoff go on sale today at 10am! If you can’t score them through the official sale site, try to get seats here.

4. If you would prefer to watch on TV, check out the best sports bars around DC, according to Eater.

5. Random, but a fun quick read (and could be helpful).
