Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade
Where: Silver Plaza, Downtown Silver Spring

Admission: Free

Turkey Day celebrations are starting early in Downtown Silver Spring. The line-up of over 100 parade units features a giant inflatable turkey, penguin and dinosaur; colorful dancing groups; glittering floats; marching bands; clowns; performing animals; and, of course, an appearance from Santa at the end. Don’t miss a fun family photo op: Right next to the ice rink, you can take a pic with a Frozen inflatable Elsa, a 10-foot tall turkey, or with Hanukkah or Christmas décor.

A Gem of an Event

Admission: $6/adult, $3/ages 13-17, free for 12 and under

Kids (and adults!) who like fossils, rocks, and/or gems are in for a treat. Northern Virginia’s 25th Annual Mineral, Gem, & Fossil show will have all that and then some. More than 20 dealers will be selling collectibles, plus there will be demonstrations, exhibits, door prizes & kids activities, including mini-mines and a fossil dig.

The Enchanted Forest

The Junior League of Northern Virginia’s annual holiday event returns. Stroll through the whimsical forest of theme decorated trees available for silent auction, while enjoying live entertainment, hands on cooking demonstrations, Kids in the Holiday Kitchen activities, a visit from Santa, a model train display by Capital Trackers, kids crafts, gifts for purchase, premium events for adults and kids, and much more. Proceeds benefit the JLNV’s community initiatives through the Kids in the Kitchen programming.

The Gaylord National Resort’s annual holiday extravaganza has festivities galore that capture the spirit of the season. And the best part is that there are activities for all ages at varying price points (even free!), from dancing fountains and indoor snowfalls to a tour of Christmas Around the World-themed ice sculptures. A Spin on the Carousel

The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, Carousel, recently opened at Arena Stage, and it is wonderful! Owen and I saw the musical last week, and we were both completely captivated and moved by the show. Beautiful performances by the talented cast, a simple yet lovely theatre-in-the-round-setting, and a story that is emotional and hopeful make for a an excellent theatre experience. I recommend it for ages 10 and up (or a date night). Watch the stars perform on local news here.

Go Whole Hog!

With the first cold weeks of late fall comes the traditional season of preserving meats for the coming year. Join the Claude Moore Farm Family as they utilize historic methods for curing, salting, and smoking the mainstay of their diet — pork. You can also take part in helping with other farm tasks that involve the use of hog byproducts, such as rendering lard, dipping candles, and making soap. An educational and fun activity for families and small groups!

Wizard School Scavenger Hunt for Harry Potter Fans

Join Watson Adventures on a unique Harry Potter-themed scavenger hunt for kids 10 & up! Follow in the footsteps of young wizards on a field trip to the National Gallery in search of art that echoes characters, places and enchanted objects in the famed Harry Potter books and movies. Wizards and muggles alike can play and enjoy this hunt. The hunt is not an addition to or variation on Harry’s adventures, but instead references to the books will provide a surprising bridge to many strange and wonderful works of art. It’s a great way to discover—or rediscover—the museum. This hunt is designed for kids and adults to do together, but all-adult teams will be allowed to compete separately. Kids must be accompanied by an adult. Advance purchase is required.

CityJews PopUp: Havdalah

Celebrate the end of Shabbat with an outdoor, sensory Havdalah experience with PJ Library and our partners. Together you’ll play, snack, read, do crafts, and enjoy a delightful Havdalah ceremony to welcome the new week. This free program is particularly good for interfaith families. Stead Park is located at 1625 P Street NW.

Tykesgiving

The successful fine dining club for parents and pipsqueaks, Nibble+squeak, will be hosting its first annual DC “Tykesgiving” event at newly Michelin starred Blue Duck Tavern on Sunday, November 20th. The special pre-Thanksgiving dinner will take over the restaurant’s esteemed Chef’s Table just for infants, toddlers, children and their extended families. Ticket price includes the three-course meal for both adult and child, kid beverages, adult beverages (up to 2 glasses of wine!), gratuity, and tax.

It’s might be cooling down a bit, but the weather should still be superb, so take advantage with some time on the trail. Peep the last of autumn leaves, tramp in places with scenic views, hike and explore history at interesting locales, and enjoy a day of active fun. Whether you want to get your holiday shopping started or just browse around and enjoy the nice vibe, this outdoor flea market on Capitol Hill, is a great place to hang on the weekend. Vendors sell everything from original artwork to fun T-shirts, handmade jewelry to funky accessories, home décor to furniture – and much, much more. Buy fresh produce from farmers’ stalls outside and butchered meats, fancy cheeses, baked goods, pasta, fresh produce, and more inside the actual Eastern Market. Even more, there is often live music courtesy of buskers around the area, and if the kids want some play time afterwards, you can hit one of several parks or playgrounds in the neighborhood (Lincoln Park, at 11th and East Capitol, is the largest and most popular among them).

It’s been a heavy week, and I think we all could probably use some good diversions right about now (some more thoughts on that here). Luckily, there are plenty of them happening around the area over the next few days. Observe Veterans Day, go for a glide, see a show, kick off the holiday season, get artsy, enjoy time outdoors, and so much more. And along with these recs, these outdoor suggestions and this indoor list will come in handy, too. Happy Weekend!

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Tour
Where: The Wall

Admission: Free

Observe Veterans Day at one of the memorials dedicated to those who have served our country. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is offering special family-friendly tours of The Wall. Kids can get an age-appropriate explanation about the day and the memorial, learn how to look up a name, see photos of service members on The Wall, and learn how to do a name rubbing.

National Veterans Day Ceremony
Where: Arlington Cemetery
When: Friday, 11am
Admission: Free

The National Veterans Day Ceremony begins at 11am with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries. Opening Day — on Ice!

Enjoy free admission along with the lovely gardens at Dumbarton Oaks. From now through mid-March, there is no fee to roam the grounds of the Georgetown locale. Bundle up for a walk among the various plats — it’s a beautiful place to explore any time of year. After, head up to M Street and exprience Georgetwon GLOW. It’s the last fee free day of the year for national parks, which means there’s no entrance fee where they usually charge to get in. Take advantage of complimentary admission and the day off from school; hit the trail at Shenandoah or Great Falls, take a ride on Skyline Drive to see the mountains covered in autumn colors, or visit Harpers Ferry.

27th Annual Museum Shop Around

Strathmore elevates the act of gift giving to an art form over Veterans Day weekend, Thursday, November 10 through Sunday, 13, 2016, with Museum Shop Around, the popular annual holiday bazaar that this year convenes 18 area museums, art centers, and cultural destinations to open pop-up shops in the historic Mansion at Strathmore. This community favorite infuses the holidays with the unexpected, clever, heartfelt, handmade, and art-inspired—Strathmore alone will feature wares from more than 100 different artisans and small businesses.

Observe the holiday at the birthplace of our National Anthem. Fort McHenry makes for a very interesting, informative, and enjoyable outing for all ages. Engaging exhibits range from historical objects and structures to multimedia displays and interactives, and this weekend there will be a special WWI original uniforms and equipment display. And the grounds located right on the Chesapeake are lovely to stroll on a nice day. Read about our recent experience there.

Drop by the American History to listen to delicious stories about food! Then, children can participate in food games and crafts, and touch cookware from the collection. This new program aims to boost early literacy, while introducing young visitors ages 0-6 to objects in the museum’s collection. It will also take place on November 19.

Family Math Expo
Where: Montgomery College, Germantown Campus
When: Saturday
Admission: Free

Count our family in for this expo presented by the Montgomery College Math Department. Part of the Maryland STEM Fair, students from preK to college, parents, teachers, and math enthusiasts of all ages are invited to wide selection of board games, card games, app games, and math exploration activities for you to try your hand and mind at. Parents and teachers will also be able to explore resources they can use in their classroom and at home with their kids to build math and problem solving skills in fun ways. Thinking about starting a math club or math circle in your school or neighborhood? This is a great event to meet folks to join with to get started.

Mommy & Me Pop-Up

The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic is Arena Stage’s newest production. Owen and I just saw a performance, and it was an excellent lift to the post-election spirits. Taking place in the Fichandler Stage, the theatre-in-the-round setting really lets the audience appreciate the wonderful talent and direction of the show. Make it a date night, or bring the kids — I’d recommend it for about ages 10 and up.

Animation Mania: Creative Design

Join the Air & Space Museum for Making STEM Magic, a program that introduces young visitors to engineering in a fun and creative way. Ever wonder how pictures can come to life in your favorite animated movie? Learn about motion pictures in the November design challenge and create an optical illusion that will make you flip out.

Grand Opening

Burger-Fi is celebrating the opening of its new Alexandria location with a weekend full of special events and food giveaways. On “Fry day Friday,” receive a free fry with the purchase of a burger or dog. The first 100 guests in line on Saturday will receive a free cheeseburger and be entered to win lift tickets to Ski Liberty, Roundtop, and Whitetail. Tommy McFly from 94.7 Fresh FM will broadcast live, and other activities will include a red carpet photo booth, face painting, and balloon twisting. All Ages Dueling Pianos

The whole crew can enjoy an afternoon of music and fun at this dueling piano shows. The two hours of all-request live music paired with a lunch buffet is a great way to stay cool on a hot summer day. And this is a performance where kids are encouraged to wiggle in their seats, dance in the aisles, and sing along!

Is your teen interested in learning 3D design and learning how to use a 3D printer? Positivi-Tree Lighting and Street Fest

The 5th Annual event is Downtown Silver Spring’s official Tree Lighting and Street Fest. And this year it will feature the lighting of Positivi-Tre, an impressive 35-foot-tall public art installation comprised of hundreds of illuminated and multi-colored umbrellas! Other fun festivities of the evening will include food tastings, live entertainment, ice sculpting, and more!

The amazing Garden & Arts Center in Solomons, MD, injects creativity and fun into STEM by adding Art, and turning Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math into STEAM! The program designed for toddlers and preschoolers uses hands-on investigations and challenges as children explore, observe, ask questions, and make predictions about the world around them as they create and play. Zip up I-95 for some fun in our sister city, where there are several great places to spend a day off. Play the day away at Port Discovery. Get an eyeful of the underwater world at the National Aquarium. Or learn about Baltimore’s early business days at the Museum of Industry.

After a long renovation, the galleries in the East Building of the National Gallery of Art recently reopened! Enjoy it all at this Community Celebration, a special fun and art-filled weekend featuring sketching, performances, face painting, and a photo booth. Activities are for all ages, unless noted otherwise. Auditorium programs are on a first-come, first-seated basis. And it’s all free!

Kids Euro Festival

Dog Pool Dip

Four-legged friends and their people are welcome for the Washington Hilton’s annual dog pool dip, when the community is invited to bring their dogs for a swim after the pol closes for the season and before it’s drained and winterized. This event benefitting the Humane Rescue Alliance has seen upwards of 150 dogs splash in the large outdoor 75-80 degree heated, saline-treated pool. It’s the final weekend of the Maryland Renaissance Festival, the annual faire that recalls medieval times with an English Tudor village full of fun and entertainment for the whole family. I highly, highly recommend going if you haven’t been yet. And I recommend getting tickets online in advance — they sold out last weekend and had to turn folks away. Huzzah!

Follow your heart straight to adventure at Disney On Ice! Characters from many of the beloved films make appearances — and perform lots of thrilling feats — on ice. Inside Out‘s emotions, Dory and friends, Elsa and Anna, are just some of the fan faves who will delight and wow.

Fibre Arts Festival
Where: Glover Park-Burleith Farmers Market

Local fiber farms and yarn spinners will be attending the Glover Park-Burleith farmers’ market with hand spun yarn from Maryland! Plus the opportunity to use an antique loom and purchase hand knitted hats, scarves, pet toys and more! There will also be 2 sheep for a mini petting zoo! Perfect for people of all ages – there will be live music, tons of fresh local produce, sustainably raised meat and eggs, fresh cut flowers, baked goods, plus breakfast and lunch options. Additionally, there will be bike repairs and sales and free yoga from 10am to 11am!

Earth Celebration and Re-Use It Sale

The Audubon Nature Preschool brings the gift of wonder to children and you can help support it at their annual Earth Celebration and ReUse It Sale. Dance for the Floor

Celebrating French Animation

Let little imaginations soar with a selection of animated shorts by French filmmakers. Kids can discover the surrealist poetry of Robert Desnos creatively visualized in a series of nine films, including The Sun of Bagnolet Street, Once Upon a Leaf, and Paris. Recommended for ages 7 and up, all films are in French with English subtitles. The program lasts approximately 55 minutes.

Friends Community School Fall Fair

Friends Community School welcomes the public to enjoy a day of fun activities at their annual Fall Fair.
