1. The Smithsonian Arts & Industries Building is reopening and celebrating the Smithsonian’s 175th anniversary with a new groundbreaking exhibition! “FUTURES” is the first building-wide exploration of the future on the National Mall, spanning 32,000 square feet inside. It is “your guide to a vast array of interactives, artworks, technologies, and ideas that are glimpses into humanity’s next chapter.” Opening Day is this Saturday, November 20, and there will be a free opening festival that includes live-streamed programs on Friday, in-person activities on Saturday, and a public concert that evening. And on Sunday, November 21, “FUTURES Remixed” will be a day for the littlest future-makers, welcoming families of all types for fun, pop-up, guided activities and bite-size experiences celebrating the everyday magic of futures ahead of everyone. The day includes “FUTURES” Roulette tours, robot races, craft making, and more. It’s all free, but RSVP to let them know you’re going.
2. Several holiday shows for kids are opening this weekend — at The Puppet Co., Adventure Theatre, and Gunston Performing Arts Center. Get details on those and see all the live entertainment coming to local stages throughout the season!

Trains in the Garden

The most wonderful holiday train display in DC is back at the Botanic Garden! Different (and perhaps better) this season is that it’s outdoors in the National Garden! The theme this time is “Farming Around the World,” and the trains wind through farming scenes from Mexico to Nepal to Massachusetts to Finland — and more destinations across the globe. Even better, just like previous displays, the scenes are all constructed from plant materials, and the details are so neat to see. There will be more holiday decor coming, and it all officially opens November 24, but the trains are there and viewable now, so go get an early look and enjoy the rest of beautiful garden while you’re there.
Side Yards

Side Yards, the nighttime circus fit for the entire family, is back at the Yards. And I can tell you from experience, it’s a super fun event! You can also enjoy activities like fortune telling, balloon artistry, glitter tattoo, and other carnival-style fun! Food and drinks will be available for purchase, or plan to dine at one of many nearby eateries.

One of my favorite KFDC Tips to impart because it’s on of my favorite places in DC: From November through mid-March, there is no fee to roam the beautiful, enchanting gardens at Dumbarton Oaks. Stroll among the various plats, find lovely tucked away placed to sit, and get ready for delights as you turn every corner. Hours are limited, but you can make a longer day of it with play time at Montrose Park next door or a bite to eat at one of of the many options in Georgetown. Cooler weather is coming, making the air crisp and activity a little more exhilarating, so take advantage with some time on the trail. 1. The Tidal Basin may be most popular in the spring when the cherry blossoms are blooming, but it’s a great DC destination for a fall outing, too (or any season, for that matter). The autumn foliage adds vivid color to the already beautiful views of iconic sites, and all of the memorials along the way — MLK, FDR, and Jefferson — are marvel-worthy and interesting to explore. The whole loop is just over two miles, plus it’s flat and paved, easy for little ones to walk. Just make sure they don’t get too close to the edge; there are no barriers between the path and the water. If we drive there, we always find parking at West Potomac Park pretty easily, then start our stroll at the FDR Memorial. (And speaking of, those of you who said the image in the Where in DC? photo contest was taken there answered correctly — it’s the ear of the sculpture of Fala, FDR’s dog! A winner will be picked and notified soon.)

NSO Music for Young Audiences: I Dream of the Moon & Xavier’s New Friends

Discover the range of percussion instruments through two imaginative stories featuring assistant principal timpanist of the NSO, Scott Christian. I Dream of the Moon (A Young Boy’s Adventure Through Space) by Keeghan Fountain tells the story of a young boy’s journey from his own backyard to the furthest reaches of the moon in a non-verbal performance on the vibraphone with projected images of original artwork by Nehemiah Russell. Xavier’s New Friends by Peter Gilbert introduces the main percussion family instruments through Xavier the Xylophone as he searches for percussion friends to join his band. Local musicians will join Scott and other NSO percussionists to tell this story and highlight the rhythmic and melodic facets of the percussion section. Recommended for ages 5+.

The outdoor ice skating season began last weekend as a few area rinks — Pentagon Row, Rockville Town Square, and Silver Spring Veteran’s Plaza — started welcoming guests to skate the day (and night) away. What to do with your jack-o-lantern now that Halloween is over? Take it to Great Country’s smashin’ session and let it fly! You have options to do this: The Silo Drop and the Zip Wire Sploosh let you do the smashin’ yourself, or bring your pumpkin to the Pumpkin Drop Zone and add it to the upside down “fireworks display” as the pumpkins are dropped from a 40-foot lift. (We’ve had a blast doing this!) Smashings are given to the pigs and cows to eat and also composted. And along with the chunkin’, there’s a whole play area of farm fun, plus apple picking ops.

It’s a personal neighborhood fave any time of year, but especially pleasant to browse and stroll during the fall. Vendors sell a variety of wares — art, apparel, jewelry, home goods, and food. Inside the actual Eastern Market, food stalls offer all kinds of fresh fare, from meats and cheese to produce and baked goods to fish and flowers. Visit the market, grab a bite at one of many eateries (either right there or nearby), and take kiddos to the nearby Eastern Market Metro Park playground (Pennsylvania & 8th SE).

Fall is a great time to roam one of the many gardens in the area as seasonal hues brighten the landscapes. Stroll among the many multi-tiered plats at Dumbarton Oaks. Explore, play, and see a variety of plant collections at the National Arboretum. Enjoy the sprawling grounds of Brookside Gardens. Wander around Green Spring Gardens on a scavenger hunt. Venture out to the gorgeous Meadowlark Botanical Garden. Or relish in the peace at the Brookland Monastery. You can bring along a picnic to most of these places (not at Dumbarton) and make it a longer day’s outing.
