Swing into Baseball Season with the National Postal Museum this Weekend!

Baseball season has begun, but you don’t have to go to the ballpark to celebrate it this coming weekend. On Saturday, April 6, the National Postal Museum is hosting a fun-filled family festival to kick off the MLB season as well as the one year countdown until the opening of their exhibition Baseball: America’s Home Run.

The Baseball Opening Day Family Festival will be loaded with festivities for all ages. In addition to an array of food vendors, visitors can enjoy a variety of baseball-inspired activities that will make the day a grand slam!

19th Century Baseball Re-enactors
Explore origins of our national pastime with the Diamond State Base Ball Club of Delaware, the Mutual Base Ball Club of New York, and the Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia. You’ll not only learn how the game has evolved over time, you’ll also be able to partake in old bat and ball games!

Bat-Making Demonstrations with Juan Baret
Ever wonder how a baseball bat is made? Juan Baret, the founder and owner of Baret Bats, will perform live bat-making demonstrations throughout the day. Following his career in the U.S. Air Force, Baret taught himself how to make baseball bats and started his own company. Learn his amazing story as you watch his craft in action!

Story Time
Before the Nationals became the Major League team of our Nation’s Capital in 2005, another baseball club with the same name played here from 1886-1889. William Hoy played for the Nationals from 1888-1889. As a deaf ballplayer, Hoy cleverly invented many of the non-verbal signs that are now a fundamental part of the game. An ASL-interpreted Story Time will explore Hoy’s incredible life and career.

Crafts Station
Use your favorite team as inspiration for decorating a pop-out baseball stadium card at the crafts station. Mail your 3-D card to someone special or take it home as a keepsake.

Picnic Area
Refuel on the outdoor terrace with a cold beverage and some creative baseball grub catered by Rasa, DC Central Kitchen, and the Washington Nationals. Food offerings will include classic options like hotdogs and nachos as well as more modern ballpark cuisine like samosas and slow-roasted pork sandwiches. Enjoy lawn games and the arrival of spring while you snack.

Create Your Own Valentines at the National Postal Museum this Weekend!

Homemade love is in the air at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum’s annual Valentine’s Day Card Workshop! Taking place this Saturday, February 9 and Sunday, February 10, the open-house event is a perfect opportunity for visitors of all ages to have fun and get creative as they make their own Valentines.

All of the supplies are provided by the museum. Choose from a superabundant array of patterned papers, rubber and postage stamps (of course), gems and other 3-D embellishments, special cut-out scissors, washi tape, stickers, markers of every color (with a surplus red and pink!), lots of hearts decor, and more. Just come ready to be creative and have fun!

Once finished, cards can be placed in envelopes, addressed, and adorned. In keeping with educating children about the postal service and how mail works, kids can pop their own cards in an official USPS mailbox in the adjacent post office. Of course, visitors are encouraged to explore the whole museum and everything else it has to offer (which I highly recommend — it’s full of exhibits that appeal to both kids and adults)!

The workshop takes place in the museum’s lower-level Atrium, which, for those new to the National Postal Museum, is full of various postal transports from over the years, including a real train car, semi-truck (yes, kids can climb in and pretend to drive!), a horse-drawn carriage, and airplanes hanging from the ceiling. The layout of the card-making stations and supply tables fosters sharing, friendliness and a sense of community. And the museum’s pleasant staff and volunteers are always available to answer questions, provide examples of beautiful completed cards, or help in any other way.

In this modern, digital era, a handmade card can be hard to come by, so this event offers a perfect way for kids to express their love for friends and family with a heartfelt note of affection and appreciation. They can also experience firsthand the satisfaction of crafting their very own unique creations from start to finish, and the pure joy of giving that creation to someone special.

Love will be in the air at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum’s annual Valentine’s Day Card Workshop this weekend! On both Saturday and Sunday, February 10-11, guests of all ages are welcome to the free, open-house event to get creative and have fun while making one-of-a-kind greetings for next week’s special day.

The museum provides all the supplies, including patterned papers, rubber stamps, gems and other 3-D embellishments, special cut-out scissors, washi tape, stickers, markers of every color (with a surplus of red and pink!), and more. Once finished, cards can be placed in envelopes, then addressed and adorned with a distinctive National Postal Museum postmark at the museum’s stamp store. Even better, kids will love dropping their cards into an official USPS mailbox decorated to exactly resemble SpongeBob SquarePants.

Plan to explore the whole museum while you’re there. The workshop takes place in the lower-level Atrium, which is full of postal transports from over the years — a real train car, semi-truck (that kids can climb in and pretend to drive!), a horse-drawn carriage, and airplanes hanging from the ceiling. And there’s much more to enjoy in the rest of the galleries.
