A corn maze of epic proportions at Montpelier Farms

It’s a peak weekend in DC, and I’m not just referring to the brilliant hues of fall foliage that make for picturesque scenes everywhere. The options for family fun seem to be boundless. Fall festivals are in full swing at locales all around the area. Local stages are buzzing with live entertainment, much of it free thanks to the fantastic month-long Kids Euro Fest. Museums are presenting art, culture, and fun with special youth programs. A couple of quirky fairs offer a little day trip back in time. Halloween activities are underway. Even the White House is part of it all, welcoming guests to tour its gardens. Plus, one I’m really looking forward to: The Fall Safety Festival, where it’s sure to be a good time, and for a great cause. And it doesn’t hurt that we’ll be able to enjoy all of this amid delicious autumn weather during one of the prettiest time of the year. Read on for details on all of the above and then some. Fall Safety Festival to Support the Maslins

The flyer might say Ward 6, but the Fall Safety Festival taking place this Sunday, October 21, welcomes everyone to enjoy a day of family-friendly activities that promote the community’s quality of life through safety and support a wonderful cause…

You likely heard about it in the news, or if you follow KFDC on Facebook you might recall that I posted about a horrific incident that occurred in my neighborhood a couple of months ago. TC Maslin, a Capitol Hill resident, husband, and dad to a 2-year-old, was brutally assaulted while walking home late one evening. He was found on a porch the next morning just a few blocks from his house, unconscious after suffering a serious brain injury in the attack.

The incident not only left TC with a very long road to recovery ahead of him, it has also utterly devastated his young family. His wife, Abby, has been blogging about their experience since the assault. Her posts, written with an eloquence and openness that have me reaching for tissues at every read, convey her challenges, dedication, and amazing strength through this tragedy. For all the people that were shaken by the incident in our community, there are many, many more who are moved by her words and the Maslins’ uphill battle.

The 5th Annual Kids Euro Festival: A Month of Cultural Adventure in DC

You don’t have to cross an ocean to introduce your kids to European art and culture. Thanks to the French-American Cultural Foundation, the 27 EU embassies, and more than 30 American cultural institutions, Europe is coming to us via the Kids Euro Festival with four weeks of continental artistic adventures.

From October 17 through November 13, the festival will present more than 200 FREE family-friendly, Euro-themed events all around the DC-metro area. Mimes, storytellers, dancers, and puppeteers are just a few of the exciting acts on the schedule. Public libraries, DC embassies, The Kennedy Center, National Gallery of Art, National Children’s Museum, Shakespeare Theatre, La Maison Française, National Geographic, Strathmore, and Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, and local schools are among the many performance venues.

The festival, designed for children ages 2-12, is the largest of its kind in the country. All 27 countries in the European Union are represented in the shows that highlight national cultural traditions and art.

Just about all of the performances on the first day take place at schools, but there are Millennium Stage shows at the Kennedy Center Thursday and Friday evenings, October 18 & 19, that are open to the public. And the open invite continues for several weeks after that.
