Five Things for Today: April 12, 2022

1.  As many DC students are on Spring Break this week and the weather has been fantastic, it’s a good time to (re)share the big list of the Best Places to Enjoy a Beautiful Day Outdoors with the Kids. Gravelly Point, pictured above, is one you’ll find among them.  (And don’t forget about the guide for Where to Go & What to Do During Spring Break 2022!)

2. Most Smithsonian museums have extended returned to regular hours being limited due to Covid,; just a few still are still closed one day a week — see all current hours here.  And not a Smithsonian, but neighboring them them on the National Mall, the National Gallery of Art is open daily, 10am – 5pm  (and the new Afro-Atlantic Histories exhibit there looks great!)

3. If you’re celebrating the holiday and need help with the meal (or just really love matzo ball soup and brisket), Eater has a round-up of where to find Passover meals around DC.

4.  Did you know Little Free Library has an app?  It shows you where nearby (or farther away) LFL’s are located, even providing directions and a map.  Some of them also include sweet stories and background about the Library.

5.  We’re spending Spring Break in Folly Beach and Charleston, SC, and highly recommend the area for family getaway!  This is actually the second time we’ve spent a Spring Break here. Have you been?  If so, what are some of your favorite things to do?  (One of mine is fossil hunting — the shores in Folly are great for it!)

Five Things for Today: April 4, 2022

Tulips galore at Burnside Farms

1. Burnside Farms’ annual Festival of Spring begins tomorrow, April 5, and tickets are available for this week! Blooming tulips and daffodils in an array of colors and varieties — more than 200 varieties of tulips and 30+ varieties of daffodils! —  is an absolutely stunning sight. Even better, you can pick your own to bring the beauty home (PYO flowers included with admission… 5 stems for adults, 3 stems for children). Admission also includes all kinds of play opportunities — bouncy fun,  cornhole games, hop on-hop off wagon rides, antique tractors and a real life size caboose, authentic dutch wooden shoes to “klomp” around in, and more.  You can BYO food for lunch or a snack al fresco in the picnic area, too.  Burnside Farms is located in Nokesville, VA, about a one-hour drive from DC.   Hours are 10am – 6pm daily.  Admission is $14-19 for weekdays,  $16-21 weekends — purchase in advance. This a a perfect activity if your kids are on Spring Break this week! See what other big blooms are literally coming up around the area in this KFDC post.

2. Starting today through April 9, National Geographic Live presents the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour at the Nat Geo headquarters downtown.  The festival offers an awe-inspiring slate of more than 20 short films, shot on location and spanning multiple countries and continents around the world.  This year’s World Tour includes three exceptional programs of films, each screened on two separate nights starting at 7pm — see details here.  And as a special perk for this year’s attendees, you can show your film festival ticket for entry into the National Geographic Museum during normal hours until May 1 to explore the new exhibit Once Upon a Climb: Stories From Everest.

3. In honor of Earth Month, The Yards and Capitol Riverfront BID are hosting The Yards Green Guide Movie Night this Friday, 7:45-9:30pm, with a screening of The Lorax. It’s free to attend, but a $5 donation to the Ancostia Watershed Society is suggested — register in advance here. BYO chairs and blankets, and to pick up a food for a picnic under the stars at one of the many nearby restaurants and eateries.

4. Just bought a new set of these hanging planter bags to get our back patio ready for hang outdoors season! They are a very cheap and easy way to pretty things up (see below).

5. Out of the mouths of babes… these kids’ comments made me laugh.  What are some funny things yours have said?

Bonus: If your kids are off from school this week, and you’re looking for more ideas for things to do, be sure to check the KFDC guide for Where to Go & What to Do During Spring Break 2022!
