The 2022 KFDC Holiday Gift Guide

A holiday photo fave: Her first Christmas, his fourth (and obviously an unwrapping pro even then)

If this gift guide looks familiar, that’s because you’ve likely seen it before — a version of it, anyway. Over the eight years I’ve been sharing it, the general ideas haven’t changed very much (nor has the above photo that I adore). While the specifics are always updated, the overall concepts have remained pretty consistent year after year, as I want my recommendations to reflect the spirit of my blog — of adventure, discovery, local culture, and family time — and these ideas do just that. (Plus, I think they’re really good suggestions! 😉 )

So just like the last many years, I’m sharing some things our family has really enjoyed around DC and/or think would make fantastic presents for a variety of people. This also gives me a chance to highlight local places and businesses offering unique experiences and products as well as people and organizations that are doing great things. And then there are ideas that are simply fun and enriching and showcase the incredible, dynamic city that is Washington, DC. None of these recommendations are sponsored; they’re just experiences, places, adventures, and products that I truly like and think you and yours might, too. Happy gifting!

PICTURE PERFECT PRESENTS

Capture them (and their hearts) with this gift

How about a gift that includes your whole gang? Present them (and yourself!) with a family portrait session. And like the last few years, I’m recommending just the right photographer for it. As mentioned in previous gift guides, I have adored Darcy Troutman’s photos forever, starting with her former blog, No Monsters in My Bed. But over the last several years, she’s launched her own photography business capturing families and weddings, helping people make and preserve memories. Her style is unique and the photos gorgeous, but her real-life, let-the-moment-seize-you approach to her work is what really makes it special. Also, she’s hilarious and sweet and really comfortable to be around, the ideal personality for the job. Plus, her photos will not only capture this time in your lives, they’ll make for great gifts for extended family throughout the year, too.

DESIGN TIME

Give design guidance from a guru

If there’s someone in your life who wants an update to their home, but needs some guidance going about it, gift them the help of an expert.  Margaret Carroll is an architect and design consultant extraordinaire and, full disclosure,  a really great friend of mine. But that just means I know first hand that she has a keen eye for style and the sharpest aesthetic of anyone I know, from the perfectly picked tile in her bathrooms (and in mine!) to the pretty booties on her feet. Her own home was even just featured in Bethesda Magazine!

LIFE-n-STYLE

The best fire pit, cozy blankets, and more lifestyle enhancing things

These ideas are a divergence from the rest, as they began in 2020 when Covid prompted a pivot from my usual experience gift theme. But while not necessarily DC-centric, many of these will help with the enjoyment of area adventures — and a few others will enhance time at home.

* I’ve recommended a Solo Stove in previous years, but this one is going on my list this year!
* Cozy blankets are perfect for outdoor fire pit hangs…and snuggling up indoors, too.  (A fun one for kids.)
* These bike lights are always a hit.
* But, first, get the bike!
* Ice skates are an ideal winter gift.
* Roller skates are great for any time of year.
* For those who love to hike, a good (and cute) daypack.
* A nice fleece for cool weather recreation: For her, for him, for kids.
For someone who digs on-the-water adventures, how about an SUP?
* Lawn games let you bring outdoor amusement anywhere (find recs for all ages via the link)
* Bubble umbrellas for rainy days are genius, and these are so pretty, your peops will want to stand under them when the sun’s out, too.
* Winter gear for kids from reliable brands: Snow bibs, boots, jackets, hats.
* Cute, comfy slips:  For her, for him, for kids.
* And Crocs are making a comeback with all the t(w)eens.
* Plus, Jibbitz to go with them, of course.
* The best PJ’s for kids (on super sale).
* A plush robe: For her, for him, for kids.
* Cashmere that’s nice and reasonably priced. (Splurge option.)
* Cookbooks…I have this one and want to get this new one.
* Other great gift books: This new this collection of poetry, an icon’s memoir, this beautiful book by one of the best writers, a funny read, this fun one I’m getting for Sasha, and this one I’m getting for Owen (that Sash will dig, too).
* Subscriptions keep the gifts coming: MasterClass, Washingtonian Magazine, National Geographic, The New YorkerBon Appetit, New York Times (just the Cooking and Games sections are great, too)
* Random fun stuff: A kids ukelele, a dreamy coloring project, an awesome mug (and more good ones), a family board game.
* Find more gift ideas for little kids here.

GIVE FREELY

Glenstone Museum is a true, free treat!

Of course, not all gifts have to come with a hefty price tag. There are so many magical yet still inexpensive experiences to be had in the DC area, some without even spending a dime. You can creatively package them up — perhaps a big, fun card with a photo — and promise a visit. Some suggestions:

* A day at the recently reopened Air & Space Museum.
* A trip to the National Zoo.
* A unique indoor/outdoor art adventure for ages 12 and up at Glenstone.
* A fossil hunting adventure at the Purse Area in Nanjemoy, MD.
* A visit to the Wizard of Oz playground, Old Maryland Farm, and Nature Center at Watkins Regional Park
* A bike ride on the Anacostia River Trail or another great area route.
* A polka-dotted experience at Yayoi Kusama’s One with Enternity at the Hirshhorn.
* A visit to Planet Word, the fantastic, language-focused museum downtown.
* A geocaching excursion on an area hike.
* A family game of disc golf at a local course.
* A photo walk at Dumbarton Oaks in winter (when admission is free).
* A day of play at Beauvoir Playground.
* Find inspo for even more here and here!

* Perhaps the best gift of all is quality time with the people in our lives, so be sure to take advantage of it during the season. The 2022 KFDC Guide to the Holiday Season Around DC is full of ideas for doing just that. Happy Holidays!

Little Kid Gifts for Parents Who Don’t Want More Stuff

[Note:  This post was written by KFDC Contributor Emily Moise, a local writer and mom of two young children.   She always has excellent recommendations for kids’ items as well as local explorations with little ones. See more of them herehereherehere, here, and last year’s stocking stuffer ideas here.]

If anything is a reminder that less is more for kids this holiday season, it’s the 25 plastic spider rings my family acquired during spooky season. Enter this gift guide — created for anyone who adores kid gift-giving but also gets overwhelmed by the excessive kid “stuff” in their home.  These picks, recommended for preschool to early elementary ages, will be used over and over, will minimize clutter, and will delight kids and even the most minimalist parents. Don’t forget to share with Grandma and Grandpa!

Never-Ending Stories
The “no such thing as too many books” attitude is great until you hit at-home library status. I’ve reduced our collection to favorites and ones that my kids will keep going back to — and maybe learn something new each time they read them. (Paired with a good public library!) Here are a few good reads that make the cut.

See Inside How Things Work

My First Encyclopedia

What Should Danny Do? (also: School Day & Vacation)

Fairy Tales: A Timeless Collection of Favorite Fairy Tales

Paw Patrol Little Golden Book Collection

Game Time
If you’ve put together Don’t Break the Ice for the 100th time, or have experienced the unnecessary complication of Mouse Trap and its 25 adjoining pieces, these game picks are for you. Easy set-up, simple concept, not a million little pieces, discreetly educational, and FUN.

Guess Who? (new easy-to-load frame!)

Disney Eye Found It!

Tenzi (ok, it’s a lot of dice – but only dice!)

Artistic Pursuits
Fostering a love of art knows no bounds. Some may not want “artwork” consuming their fridge, but parents will always enable the process. Here are reusable, long-lasting, well-contained, and lovable items for all pursuits, scribbling included.

Unicorn Doodle Board

Tabletop White Board/Chalkboard

Crayola Inspiration Art Case

Arts & Crafts Library

Kids Digital Camera

Play Set Extensions
Is there one play set that rises to the top in your home? In our house, a Paw Patrol tower has decorated our living room for almost a year now while everything else went out of style. Magnetic tiles also have a permanent seat by the coffee table. Extend what works!

2022 Paw Patrol Vehicle (and the latest and greatest tower)

Magna-Tiles Stardust Set

Five Interesting Sites & Stories for the Holiday Season in the DC Area

[Note: This is a guest post contributed by JoAnn Hill, a DC area educator and author of the book “Secret Washington, DC: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure.” ]

The holidays are in full swing in the Washington, DC, area and there’s no better time to get out, explore, and embrace the holiday spirt! The National Cathedral’s stunning remarkable window that’s out of this world, DC’s original brewery and palatial castle, an engagement for the history books, cunning spies and egregious betrayals, and a naval munitions factory turned popular art center are just some of the incredible and lesser-known stories and sites just waiting to be explored this holiday season.

Check out local DC author JoAnn Hill’s book Secret Washington, DC: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure to discover dozens of additional spots in and around the Washington, DC area. (KFDC Tip: Think holiday gifting — the book would be a perfect holiday present!)

National Cathedral: “To the Moon and Back”

As the sixth largest cathedral in the world and the second largest in the United States, the Washington National Cathedral could be described as other-worldly. Perhaps no other feature further confirms this bold description than the fact that there is a small fragment of the moon in one of its windows, thanks to the three men who were the first to ever set foot on the moon. Five years after Apollo 11 astronauts Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong, and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin made history, they personally delivered the seven-gram sample of stone to the cathedral on July 21, 1974.

In the four years leading up to the lunar rock arriving at the cathedral, NASA administrator Dr. Thomas Pain collaborated with St. Louis artist Rodney Winfield to design and build the window that contained the rock. The other-worldly stained glass, frequently dubbed the Space Window, portrays stars and orbiting planets in brilliant colors of blue, green, white, red, and orange. The vibrant creation was modeled after photos taken during the Apollo 11 mission.

Read all about it: Learn more about the National Cathedral window that contains a small fragment of the moon on pages 82-83 of Secret Washington, DC: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure.

Go and explore this holiday season: In-person holiday concerts, programs, and services at the National Cathedral are back! Visit their website to learn more.

Where: The National Cathedral is located at 3101 Wisconsin Avenue NW.

Heurich House: “Prost! A Brewmaster and His Castle”

DC’s burgeoning craft beer and brewery scene has become a welcome mainstay of late. The art of brewing, however, is nothing new to the city. The palatial Christian Heurich House, better known as the Brewmaster’s Castle, is

the District’s original brewery, and arguably one of the most resplendent in the nation.

Situated on a tree-lined residential street in DC’s affluent Dupont Circle neighborhood, the chocolate- colored castle is often overlooked by passersby. Many are unaware of its rich and fascinating history tracing back to German beer brewer Christian Heurich. Heurich learned the art of brewing from his father as a child and immediately set out to build his beer-brewing empire upon arriving in the states in 1866. Later, in the 1890s, he built the gothic structure to be his grand palace. He created an enormous, incombustible brewery where the famous Kennedy Center stands today that could produce over half a million barrels a year. Heurich became the second largest employer in DC, surpassed only by the government. Heurich used his abundant wealth to build a palatial home with his second wife. The imposing Victorian home served as his home until his death in 1945 at the age of 102

Read all about it: Read more about the Heurich House and the brewmaster himself on pages 130-131 of Secret Washington, DC: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure.

Go and explore this holiday season: Christkindlmarkt is back in person this year from December 3-5.  Check out the Heurich House’s calendar of events to learn more about their 1921 Garden Bar, public access to their garden, and more.

Where: The Heurich House is located on 1307 New Hampshire Avenue NW.

Martin’s Tavern: “Ask and Say Yes”

As a cherished Georgetown institution dating back to 1933, Martin’s Tavern is the community’s oldest family-run restaurant. Its old-DC charm, neighborhood-friendly appeal, and warm and inviting ambience have drawn patrons for close to a century. Add that it also served as the location of John F. Kennedy Jr’s proposal to Jacqueline Bouvier, and it’s easy to see why Martin’s has been a perennial favorite among both locals and tourists.

On June 24, 1953, the young senator from Massachusetts proposed to his beautiful girlfriend at the historic and intimate Georgetown tavern. Over the years, however, doubt began to arise about whether Martin’s was the site of the engagement. Alternate stories surfaced, including that Kennedy had proposed over the phone or by telegram, or at a restaurant in Boston. After years of skepticism and speculation, the story was finally corroborated in 2015, when then-98-year-old Marion Smoak confirmed that he was enjoying a martini at the bar on the same night that Kennedy proposed. Although the engagement took place in a public setting, the event was a quiet one, absent of any grand gestures or words, or bended knee.

Read all about it: Learn more about JFK’s proposal to Jackie and Martin’s Tavern famous “proposal booth” pages 44-45 of Secret Washington, DC:  A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure.

Go and explore this holiday season: Martin’s Tavern is open seven days a week. Visit their website for hours and to make a reservation.

Where: Martin’s Tavern is located on 1264 Wisconsin Avenue NW.

Mr. Smith’s: “A Spy and a Soviet Walk into a Bar”

Those looking to grab a drink or nosh on some casual pub fare at Georgetown’s popular Mr. Smith’s restaurant and bar may be surprised to hear that this long-standing institution once played a major role in DC’s spy scene. The former home of Chadwicks, a long-time Georgetown favorite, was once the setting of one of the biggest betrayals in our country’s history.

On June 13, 1985, CIA counterintelligence officer Aldrich Ames met with Soviet chief Vikto Cherkashin at the restaurant, where he purportedly divulged the names of over one hundred CIA agents working undercover in the Soviet Union. Fluent in Russian, Ames was burdened with financial problems, and in addition he held the Soviet Union in high esteem. Both matters ultimately led to Ames disclosing the identities of undercover CIA operatives by jotting their names down on a notepad. The risky act of betrayal came with a hefty payout of $4.6 million. Ames’ sudden windfall, however, did not go unnoticed, as he began recklessly spending his new fortune on luxurious items. Many began to question his newly found wealth.

Read all about it: Read more about this egregious betrayal and the Georgetown institution on pages 118-119 of Secret Washington, DC: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure.

Go and explore this holiday season: Mr. Smith’s is open seven days a week. Visit their website for hours and to make a reservation.

Where: Mr. Smith’s is located on 3205 K Street NW, right across from Georgetown’s Waterfront Park.

The Torpedo Factory Art Center: “From Arsenal to Art”

The Torpedo Art Factory Center is often recognized as one of Old Town Alexandria’s prized gems. From art studios and galleries to workshops and classes, the sprawling space has something for everyone, regardless of age. It quietly holds the country’s largest number of publicly accessible working artists’ studios in one collective space. The beloved art center is lovely to visit year-round, especially during the holiday season. The building, however, wasn’t always a creative and vibrant space. Quite the contrary. The Torpedo Art Factory used to be a real-life torpedo factory, where munitions were manufactured for wartime.

On the day following Armistice Day, November 12, 1918, which marked the official end of World War I, the US Navy began construction on the US Naval Torpedo Station. Upon completion, the station was responsible for the production and maintenance of Mark III torpedoes for the next five years. Manufacturing stopped in 1923, and the space was then transformed into a storage space for munitions until 1937, when the Mark XIV torpedo began being built to be used in World War II. This torpedo was painted green so that the Navy could locate it in the water when it was tested at Piney Point, Maryland. At the conclusion of World War II in 1945, the weaponry plant continued to produce parts for rocket engines before closing permanently in 1946.

Read all about it: Discover more about the Torpedo Factory’s remarkable transformation on pages 170-171 of Secret Washington, DC: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure.

Go and explore this holiday season: The Torpedo Factory is open Wednesdays – Sundays. They are hosting a holiday festival on December 4. Visit their website for more information regarding hours, events, artists, classes and more.

Where: The Torpedo Factory is located on 105 N. Union Street, Alexandria VA.

The 2021 KFDC Holiday Gift Guide

A holiday photo fave: Her first Christmas, his fourth (and obviously an unwrapping pro even then)

If you’ve been reading KFDC awhile, this gift guide — including this very intro — may look familiar.  And that’s intentional. In its seventh year, the general suggestions haven’t changed very much (nor has the above photo that I adore). While the specifics have been updated, the overall concepts have remained consistent over the years. That’s because I want my recommendations to reflect the spirit of my blog — of adventure, discovery, local culture, and family time — and these ideas do just that. (Plus, I think they’re really good suggestions! 😉 )

So just like the last many years, I’m sharing some things our family has really enjoyed around DC and/or think would make fantastic presents for a variety of people. This also gives me a chance to highlight local businesses offering unique experiences and products as well as people and organizations that are doing great things.

If there’s someone in your life who wants a update to their home, but needs some guidance going about it, gift them the help of an expert. She actually did a tear-down/rebuild of her own house, and you can take a virtual tour of it here.

CREATURE COMFORTS

The best fire pit, cozy blankets, and more gifts of comfort (a puppy would be cool, too!)

These ideas are a divergence from the rest, as they are inspired by last year’s guide when Covid prompted a pivot from my usual gifting theme. But while not necessarily DC-centric, many of these will help enjoy area adventures — and a few others will help enhance time at home.

* These bike lights are always a hit!
* The Solo Stove was one of our very best purchases last year for fire pit hangs that became more popular during the Covid winter — and are still a fun activity on the home front.
*portable projector makes movie nights cool for kids (and adults).  They can be outdoors… or anywhere, for that matter.
* Cozy blankets are perfect for outdoor hangs…and snuggling up indoors, too.  (Fun ones for kids.)
* Those who love to hike will dig a good backpack.
For someone who loves on-the-water adventures, how about an SUP?
* Lawn games let you bring outdoor amusement anywhere (link has recs for all ages)
* Bubble umbrellas for rainy days are genius, and these are so pretty, your peops will want to stand under them when the sun’s out, too.
* Winter gear for kids: Snow bibs, boots, jackets, hats.
* Comfy kicks:  For her, for him, for kids.
* A plush robe: For her, for him, for kids.
* A few things inspired by the year’s best TV show:  Thisthis, and this.
* Subscriptions keep the gifts coming: MasterClass, Washingtonian Magazine, National Geographic, The New YorkerBon Appetit, New York Times (just the Cooking and Games sections are great, too)
* Find more gift ideas for little kids here, hereherehere, and here.

GIVE FREELY

Free experiences (and gifts) abound

Of course, not all gifts have to come with a hefty price tag. There are so many magical yet still inexpensive experiences to be had in the DC area, some without even spending a dime. You can creatively package them up — perhaps a big, fun card with a photo — and promise a visit. Some suggestions:

* A tour of the newest exhibitions at the National Museum of Natural History.
* A bike ride on the National Mall — see the memorials and visit museums.
* For ages 12 and up, Glenstone offers an incredible, unique art experience.
* A fossil hunting adventure.
* A DYI scavenger hunt on an area hike.
* A geocaching excursion.
* A visit to Planet Word, the super cool museum downtown.
* A photo walk at Dumbarton Oaks in winter (when admission is free).
* A nature walk at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens.
* A day of play at Beauvoir Playground.
* The Fairy Lolly and art experiences at Annmarie Sculpture Garden.
A trip to Watkins Regional Park Wizard of Oz playground, Old Maryland Farm, and Nature Center.
* A family game of disc golf at a local course.
* Find inspo for even more!

*Perhaps the best gift of all is quality time with the people in our lives, so be sure to take advantage of it during the season. The 2021 KFDC Guide to the Holiday Season in DC is full of ideas for doing just that. Happy Holidays!

The 2020 KFDC Holiday Gift Guide

The gift recs might change, but never this pic

The phrase “[insert any annual occurrence] is going to look a lot different this year” is becoming all too redundant.  But it’s fitting for so many situations, including this guide.  If you’ve been reading KFDC awhile, then you know my annual holiday gift recommendations usually are heavy on local experiences to reflect the spirit of adventure and exploring that (I hope) my blog captures.

However, like much of life these days, it’s going to look a lot different this year.  With the lack of live entertainment and in-person programs combined with a cautious view of what’s safe to do, major sections of the guide had to be scrapped.  But — and here’s another ubiquitous term of 2020 — we pivot.  Where there used to be listings for upcoming shows to snag tickets to gift, you’ll find ideas to elevate your at-home entertainment.  Instead of recs for indoor experiences that are now considered iffy, there are products to enhance your outdoor adventures.  And suggestions for awesome on-site classes are replaced with tips for online enrichment.

Some of these ideas will still look familiar because, as I’ve said in the past, I think they’re really good suggestions.😉 Plus, many of them give me the chance to highlight local businesses offering unique products and services as well as organizations that are doing great things.  I hope you’ll find all of these, old and new, helpful as you head into the holiday season. Happy gifting!

HOME ENTERTAINMENT

Since live theatre, concerts, or even movies at local venues aren’t really options right now, help bring the entertainment home instead. The right devices, accessories, and treats can create alternative environments to enjoy those experiences you miss and have socially distant hang outs with company.  Even better, they make great gifts! Here are some to check out, with something for everyone on your list:

* With a portable projector, kids (and adults) can have friends over for outdoor movie nights.
* A real projector screen completes the outdoor theatre set up.
* Put on your own concert with a karaoke machine or microphone.
* The perfect accessory for gamers.
* For staying warm during winter backyard hangs, the Solo Stove or a patio heater are worth the splurge.
*  Cozy blankets are great to gift. (Another style. Splurge option.)
* Kids can wrap up in fun ones, like this and this.
* Footwear for hang-at-home occasions. (Budget option.)
* Make it all sweeter with City Bonfires, created by two local dads.
* Or spice it up with a popcorn kit.

OPT OUTSIDE

Bikes & accessories are the 2020 gift (in KFDC’s opinion)

These days, our best bets for getting out of the house and social distancing safely are activities outdoors. So, make those al fresco adventures better for everyone on your gift list with gear that supports their favorite hobbies, encourages them to try new ones, and keeps them happy outside in all conditions.

* Everyone needs a bike these days. (More options.)
* Most important accessory for it: Bike helmet — for kids & adults.
* We have and love this bike bag.
* Make rides sparkle — and visible — with these lights.
* Sleds are a must-have for the snowy season
* As is the right apparel for kiddos.
* Good winter boots, too. (More options: These and these.)
* Grown-ups also need good winter wear: For moms & dads.
* Fuzzy pullover is on trend. (Splurge option.)
* Bombas are warm and fun for all aged tootsies
* Yeti drinkware…or go all out with a cooler.
* Winter hats: Littles, kids, mom, dad.
* For rainy days, a bubble umbrella is practical, and these are so pretty.
* Roller skates  are making a come back — for kids and adults.
* Take game playing outdoors with Spike Ball.
* It’s a good time to get into disc golf.
* Of course, all outdoor activities should include masks (as should any 2020 gift guide): For kids, for working out, for a pretty look, for fashion, for Christmas,  for Chanukah, for fun.

THE INSIDE STORY

Cheers to gifting fun drinkware!

Between closures due to Covid and cold months ahead, there will be more time spent indoors this winter. Gifts to make it cozy and fun for people you love are perfect to give. Here are some ideas, a mix of practical, indulgent, amusing, and unique items.

* Tea time, anyone?
* Or hot chocolate stocking stuffers?
* Enjoy it in these map mugs — fun and educational!
* Very handy instructional hot toddy mugs.
* And how cute are these personalized family mugs?
* Take advantage of soup and stew season.
The Always Pan is the cooking item of the season
* Shop for even more cookware locally at the wonderful Hill’s Kitchen.

* New family game night recs: Kids Against Maturity, Just One, Fun Employed, Anomia.

GAME ON

A trove of games and puzzles at Labyrinth

Here’s where to go locally for those recommended games above.  DC’s best shop for board games and puzzles continues to offer so many fantastic options for holiday gifts, so plan on a visit to Labyrinth Game Shop on Capitol Hill — or to the website for socially distanced browsing. This is one of my go-tos for birthday party presents and always a stop for some shopping this time of year. Since I first wrote about the store when it opened 10 years ago, it’s gotten even better, so much that they expanded to a second space next door. They have something for everyone — all ages, every interest. Even better, there’s always a fun, friendly vibe in the store, plus the service is just as great as the inventory. All of the staff are very knowledgeable about what they sell — give them a few details about who you’re shopping for, and they’ll show you just the right game or puzzle to buy. (You can do this through their online Holiday Gift Assist, too!)

WORK IT

Wireless headphones and more ways  to upgrade their workspace

Almost everyone has made some kind of work transition to their house over the last year — from the office, school, or even the gym. And since it looks like it’ll be going on at least a little while longer, these gifts that improve those at-home set-ups will be much appreciated — for job work, class work, and working out.

* This stand up desk converter gets great reviews.
* A new desk chair for kids will make online school more comfy.
* Wireless headphones for work — and leisure. (Splurge option.)
* A map wall decal could come in handy for geography class.
* There are all kinds of blue light glasses available.
* The new Echo Dots are pretty cool (my kids love their older models).
* Any yogi can always use a new mat.
* Weight sets and exercise bands for at-home workouts.
Local shop Summit to Soul also has awesome workout wear.
* Lululemon has some great deals right now.

B(U)Y THE BOOK

Local stores like Kramers offer online & IRL shopping

Look for the above recs and more great reads for everyone at a local independent bookstore. You can shop just about all of them online, too.

* Kramerbooks in Dupont Circle is a DC institution and always a great place to browse and have a bite at Afterwards Cafe.
* Combine your shopping trip to Labyrinth with a stop next door at East City Book Shop.
* On H Street NE, Solid State Books  also has a nice selection.
* Find reads just for kids at Hurray for Books in Old Town Alexandria.
* Politics & Prose, one of the city’s most well known bookstores has locations at Union Market, The Wharf, and its original Connecticut Avenue shop.
* Go secondhand at Capitol Hill Books, a legendary used bookshop.

BOX IT UP

Little Loving Hands’ gift boxes give back

This category includes two kinds of gifts, but one theme: They come in a box. Subscription boxes that are delivered on a regular basis keep the surprises coming. And then there are gift boxes curated just for the holidays, including some really good ones from local businesses.

* Local retailer Steadfast Supply has a fantastic variety of gift boxes.
* Little Loving Hands, started local moms, lets kids can get creative & give back.
* Raddish Kids delivers monthly cooking inspo.
* Time 4 Mom is a subscription service especially for busy mamas.

KEEP IT CLASSY

Get in the act with Adventure Theatre’s virtual classes

ENTER THROUGH THE MUSEUM GIFT SHOP

The Spy Museum gift shop is full of intriguing inventory

We have some pretty amazing museums in our city, and many of their gift shops — that are also online — echo the impressive collections with items that are an extension of their programs. It’s not just prints of paintings you see; you can buy books, puzzles, accessories, gadgets, games, housewares, and lots of children’s items that are artistic, clever, and innovative. And I highly recommend browsing the shops of some of the other museums in town: The International Spy Museum, National Building Museum, and Phillips Collection all have unique and interesting inventory.

GREAT TASTE

Delight with Provisions from Officina

You kind of can’t go wrong with the gift of food. I mean, everyone eats, and no matter how old, we all have our favorite bites and places for them. That’s why a gift card to a restaurant or treatery (hey, did I just make up a word?) or an edible product from a local establishment will satisfy many a giftee’s appetite or craving. Here are a few ideas to chew on:

* The Pretzel Bakery is our neighborhood fave for savory & sweet treats.
* Officina offers Provisions for a week of delicious eating.
* If someone on your gift list loves sushi, they need to try O-Ku.
* Give a gift card for Rose’s Luxury for Rose’s At Home Dinner Delivery.
* You can’t go wrong with goodies from Baked & Wired.
* Cider enthusiasts will love a gift card from ANXO.
* All Purpose Pizzeria is delish and offering holiday gift cards.
* Goldbelly is an online marketplace of well-known purveyors from all over.
* Trader Joes‘ giant chocolate bars, tins of peppermint bark, and other gifty items are easy last minute (or planned) treats.
* The above are just a few recs. You can give a gift card from any place you want to support — browse Open Table and Resy for more reminders of what’s out there.

GIVE… BACK

Give to a cause to gift a loved one

How about boxing up hope and happiness? Gifts That Give Hope, an online market this year, lets you support the community and find unique and meaningful gifts for loved ones as you make donations to local charities in their names.  You can also do this through the GIVE page here on the blog, which has suggestions on where to contribute, all of them shared by KFDC readers. You can give your time and plan a volunteering outing with your kids to show them the gift of giving back. While most of those opportunities are limited right now, you could do a trash pick-up or find ways for kids to volunteer from home.

GIVE FREELY

The gift of a local adventure — and it doesn’t cost a thing

Of course, not all gifts have to come with a hefty price tag. There are so many magical yet still inexpensive experiences to be had in the DC area, some without even spending a dime. You can creatively package them up — perhaps a big, fun card with a photo — and promise a visit. Some suggestions:

* A DIY scavenger hunt at the National Arboretum.
* A holiday lights tour — many continue into January.
* A visit to Planet Word, DC’s newest, coolest museum.
* Fossil hunting adventures at the Purse Area or Calvert Cliffs State Park.
* A bike ride bookended by fun explorations and play.

Call for more:  Are you (or is someone you know) a local businesses owner or maker offering products that would make great gifts?  Let us know by leaving a link in the comments, if so!

*Many of the newer recs are affiliate links (though I put a ton of thought into them), which means I could earn a small commission when you click on them and make a purchase. As a small business, especially during this challenging time, your support is very much appreciated!
