From cool hikes to art experiences to seasonal sports to garden explorations to year-round fun, there are all kinds of things to do that keep social distancing and safety in mind. All you really need is the right apparel and maybe a little extra outdoor gear.

Get artsy with the National Portrait Gallery as the museum brings its weekly art workshops to you virtually. Every Friday, they post a YouTube video with a new activity or technique. Just like in the IRL workshops, all ages are welcome to get creative with artist Jill Galloway inspired by the museums’s collection.

African American Family Festival

Join Price George’s County Parks as they close out Black History Month.  This virtual festival includes all kinds of  workshops, performances, storytellers, crafts, and a virtual marketplace with vendors selling culturally relevant African and African American goods and products. There are many great events and activities throughout the DC area to celebrate Black History — during this last weekend of February and beyond. Museum programs, guided and self-guided tours, visits to significant sites, and more are enlightening and entertaining for all ages.

Last Call for Crystalline
Where: ARTECHOUSE | Southwest DC

The current exhibition  at ARTECHOUSE closes after this weekend.  The gallery known for its visually stunning digital art has transformed into a blue-hued haven intended to evoke calm and peace during a turbulent time. Like all of the exhibitions there, just about all of it is interactive (but not hands-on), as the images change with viewers’ motions, encouraging play. Immersing into the depths of the color, even just for a little while, is a dazzling and delightful escape from the bizarre Covid world outside.

Fun at Fairfax Parks

There are new events from the Fairfax County Park Authority all the time, and this weekend has a fresh batch of nature-inspired activities for guests of all ages.  Enjoy a private program about nocturnal animals and a campfire at Hidden Oaks Nature Center. Join a geocaching workshop at Lake Fairfax Park.  Take a twilight boardwalk stroll at Huntley Meadows. The workshop mentioned above inspired this rec. Geocaching is a super fun way to explore some of your favorite outdoor places and discover new ones. It’s like a scavenger hunt, and perfect for adding a little adventure to your outings. Even better, you can pick and choose where and when you want to do it. Campfire Ring Rentals
Where: Parks in Montgomery County, MD

Admission: $25/hour – $100 total

Sit around a cozy campfire roasting marshmallows and sharing stories with friends and family. Montgomery Parks is helping make this happen by offering campfire ring reservations at four different locations. Visit the website for more details.

Maple Trail Walk & Sugaring
Where: Brookside Nature Center | Wheaton, MD
When: Saturday, 11am – 2:30pm & Sunday, 1-4pm
Admission: Free

This weekend also wraps up Brookside’s annual Maple Sugaring Days.  The maple trees are taped, and you can take a self-guided tour to learn how maple sap gets from the trees to your table. The trail has been available onsite during February, and a naturalist is on hand weekends to talk about the boiling process, too. Dress for the weather and wear boots — Sugaring Season is also known as Mud Season! The Maple trail walk is free and open from dawn to dusk, the naturalist is there during the hours listed above. Start the Maple trail walk at our 1400 Glenallan Avenue parking lot location – just look for the sugar maple leaf signs.  Make time to explore the grounds of Brookside Gardens while you’re there — it’s a lovely place to wander around!

Art Walk

Take a stroll and enjoy some art, too. There are several places and ways to see creative works on a walk outdoors. The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden recently reopened with daily hours 11am – 4pm. Annmarie Sculpture Garden has lovely grounds decorated with large pieces and smaller pops of art. Browse and shop the art and more at Eastern Market’s weekend outdoor flea market.  And MuralsDC will help guide you to works by local artists all over the city.

Take & Make It: Waterfowl
Where: Black Hill Visitor Center | Boyds, MD (for pick-up)

It’s a new twist on an old favorite! Stop by the Black Hill Visitor Center to pick up a waterfowl craft kit to work on at home and check out who is visiting the lake. Inside the kit are directions for a craft to help you see the birds and a sheet to help identify the birds visiting Black Hill or a pond near you. The kits also include coloring pages and some information on waterfowl. Stop by anytime during program hours to pick up your craft kit.

Skate Al Fresco

Glide under the sky and stars! The ice rinks at Pentagon Row,  Silver Spring at Veterans PlazaRockville Town Square, Reston Town Center, Cameron Run, Merriweather District,  are welcoming guests to skate the day — and night — away with extra safety measures in place for Covid.  Advanced reservations are required at just about all of these places, so plan accordingly.

Bring Home the Adventure
Where: Adventure Theatre | Online

Admission: Free
Join Adventure Theatre for their first ever Stream-A-Thon, hosted by Artistic Director Chil Kong! It will feature 30 hours of programming celebrating musical theatre with presentations by stars of Broadway, film, and stage; AT’s Academy students, including members of the Pre-Professional Program; local artists; partner and community organizations; and many more incredible guest appearances. The digital marathon replaces ATMTC’s annual Gala as our signature fundraising event to support our mission of serving children and families in the community with exceptional theatrical experiences. Mother Tongue Film Festival

The virtual Mother Tongue Film Festival is running through run through May, celebrating cultural and linguistic diversity as it showcases films and filmmakers from around the world.  The event highlights the crucial role languages play in our daily lives. All films are free to watch online.

Carousel Centennial

The beautiful Wentzel Carousel at Glen Echo Park that so many of our kids (and us!) have probably whirled around countless times is turning 100 years old. The park is celebrating with a variety of online and, hopefully, in person events this summer. Today, you can take a behind-the-scenes tour of the carousel with a National Park Service Ranger and learn about the history and fun facts about the carousel. View it on the park’s YouTube channel.

Escape into Crystalline

Solid Hikes

Bundle up and enjoy the sunshine as you hit the trail! After the wet weather, you may want to opt for places with paved paths or boardwalks to avoid tramping in mud. Some recs for that: National Arboretum, Quiet Waters Park, and Huntley Meadows. Of course, if you don’t mind a little (or a lot of) dirt on your shoes, there are many more options for walks in the woods.

River Walk
Where: Along the Potomac | Mall to Georgetown, DC
When: Throughout the weekend

Here’s a nice walk with great views and fun stops: Start at the Lincoln Memorial and head towards Georgetown past the volley ball courts to the Rock Creek Trail, the paved path that runs along the river past the Kennedy Center. Take the pedestrian bridge to The REACH to explore the grounds and outdoor art. Continue your walk along the trail to Georgetown – it take you right to the Washington Harbour area, where you can stop for a bite an one of the restaurants with outdoor, heated seating. Of course, you can do this in reverse and make it shorter (start at the KC) for little legs.

Art & Me Preservation Workshop
Where: National Museum of Asian Art | Online

Celebrate the Year of the Ox with the art doctors in this virtual workshop! From toys to tiles, see how artists have been inspired by oxen for generations and how Smithsonian conservators preserve these artworks. Then create your own ox masterpiece to ring in the new year. This hands-on, art-making preservation workshop is designed for kids ages 3-8 and their caretakers. Register in advance — one per family — and a Zoom link and a list of suggested materials will be sent to registered participants 24–48 hours in advance of the workshop.

Pop-Up Consignment Shop

PicklesDC is hosting it’s first outdoor pop-up of the season at Confetti in Tenleytown. Shop gently used children’s clothing, shoes, and toys AND enjoy coffee, treats and more from Confetti cafe. Located at 4545 42nd St NW #109.

Picnic in the Park Warm-Up Days

It may be cold outside, but Picnic in the Park is heating up! Montgomery Parks is bringing firepits and patio heaters to the parks for Warm–Up Days. Bundle up and join for a fun winter outing! There are two seating choices, and firepits can be reserved for a group of six people or fewer for 90 minutes for $25. A table for two with a patio heater can be reserved for 90-minutes for $10.

DC Strings Celebrate Black History Month

Join DC Strings Orchestra online as the ensemble celebrates Black History Month with works from Florence Price, CPE Bach and others. Ice It

Sunshine and cool temps throughout the weekend will make it a great time to skate. Circle the rinks at Pentagon Row in Pentagon City, Veteran’s Plaza in Silver Spring , Rockville Town Square, Reston Town Center, Color Burst in Columbia, or Cameron Run in Arlington. This post has details on alfresco (and indoor) ice skating options in the area.

Downhill Fast
Where: Ski resorts around the region

After the recent winter weather, it’l be a good time to hit the slopes! Skiing is a fun, active, socially distanced way to take advantage of the season. And there are a bunch of ski resorts within a few hours’ drive that are great for young, newbie skiers (and veteran swooshers, too). This post has info about Whitetail and our recent day trip there. And other closest resorts for day trips are Liberty and Bryce.  Farther away, but good to check out for longer trips are Roundtop,  Massanutten,  Wintergreen,  Seven Springs,  Hidden Valley,  Snowshoe,  Timberline, and Wisp.

Tee Up
Where: Top Golf | National Harbor & Gaithersburg, MD

Practice your swing, enjoy a bite, and have some “outdoor” fun while you stay warm.  All of the hitting bays at Top Golf are climate controlled, plus there’s a full service restaurant and bar (for parents, obvi), and a rooftop terrace with a firepit.  Heath and safety measure are in place as well.

Underwater Explorations
Where: National Aquarium | Baltimore, MD

See creatures of the sea, learn about marine life, and stay warm while you enjoy an outing with the kids. The National Aquarium is welcoming visitors with extra safety measures in place for Covid. Tickets are timed entry, and it’s a good idea to reserve in advance.

Several more places in Baltimore are open and practicing Covid safety protocols if you’re looking for a change of scenery. Explore the exhibits at Maryland Science Center. See some of the quirkiest, coolest art ever at the American Visionary Art Museum. Play the day away at Port Discovery.  Or view history in the works at the Baltimore Museum of Industry (open by appt).

Mother Tongue Film Festival

The sixth annual Mother Tongue Film Festival, going virtual this year, begins on Sunday and will run through May. The event celebrates cultural and linguistic diversity by showcasing films and filmmakers from around the world, highlighting the crucial role languages play in our daily lives. Lighting up Lanterns for Tết

Celebrate Tết, Vietnamese Lunar New Year, in this family workshop. Honoring the power of hope in dark times, this holiday reminds us that the light of a lantern can offer cheer and the promise of better times ahead. This program, led by artist Khánh H. Lê, will include an interactive lantern-making workshop and information about how the holiday is celebrated in Vietnam. It is designed for children six and older with adult companions. Register in advance — one per family. Artful Conversations: Sensory Sketching

The NGA’s monthly family program is back with a new session that introduces kids to art in the museum’s collection in fun, unique ways. Spreading Kindness: Virtual Valentine Greetings

Celebrate the Valentine’s Day by giving back with Eliana’s Light. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to create cards, poems, and paintings for children who have to be in a DC, MD, or VA pediatric hospital over the holiday. Pre-pandemic, these pieces of art would be delivered to their recipients, but this year volunteers should email them instead. They’ll be shared through social media and email to give a boost to those who have been going through a lot over the past year due to the effects of COVID-19. This small act of kindness can have a big impact. More details about the program are here.

A great place to keep in mind when you prefer an indoor outing, Buddie Ford Nature Center in Alexandria has Covid safety measures in place and is welcoming visitors two days a week. And if you are up for some outdoor time and weather permits, the adjacent Dora Kelley Nature Park, is nice for a short hike.

Lunar New Year Virtual Celebration
Where: American Art Museum | Online

Admission: Free

Ring in the Year of the Ox online with the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Chinese Cultural Institute, and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the US. Enjoy streamed video performances and demonstrations of traditional Chinese crafts and Lunar New Year traditions. And be sure to check out the SAAM Family Zone for more crafts, coloring pages, videos, and other activities.

Hike the Underground Railroad Experience Trail

A great outing with kids during Black History Month (or anytime), this hike offers insight into the experience of enslaved peoples’ escape to freedom. The walk through woods and along edges of fields (with a map and explanation of the hike) is interesting and enlightening as well as an active, socially distanced way to spend time outdoors. Black History in Alexandria

There are a few new major projects and programs that highlight Black history experiences throughout the Alexandria. Walk along the Duke Street Black History Trail. Or hop in the car for a Black History Driving Tour.  Manumission Tour Company also offers an Underground Railroad-themed tour.

Unity | Peace | Forward 
Where: The REACH | Kennedy Center, DC

The Kennedy Center just debuted a new art installation at The REACH, which is a lovely place in the city to go for a socially distanced stroll.  A response to this time of unprecedented challenges, Unity | Peace | Forward is a free exhibit in three parts scattered around the grounds. You can see it daily and stroll the lovely outdoor area while the KC is closed.  It gets a multimedia boost on Friday and Saturday evenings from 4:30–8:30pm, when a video of quotes from 65 artists around the world is projected on a Video Wall.  (It can also be viewed online at any time.) Get a glimpse on the Kennedy Center website.

Virtual Nature Valentines
Where: Meadowside Nature Center | Online
When: February 13, 1-2pm
Admission:Free

Consider collecting outdoor items to create your very own nature valentine. Before the program, go on a walk and collect nuts, sticks, and other natural items. During the program, participants will share why they collected items and assemble valentines. A suggested list of supplies will be emailed before the program to help prepare. An adult may need to assist the participant. This program will take place using Microsoft Teams. Recommended for ages 5+.

Car Seat Safety Session

Kid Safe DC, a new IG with general safety tips started by physicians from Children’s Nationals, is hosting a free workshop. Sign up for a free virtual car seat safety check — you can schedule an appointment to meet one-on-one with a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician via Zoom to learn how to correctly use and install your car seat(s) and have any questions answered by experts. Register through the link.

Mission: Fun
Where: International Spy Museum | Southwest DC

The Spy Museum has reopened its doors on weekends (Friday – Sunday), and you can explore the intriguing world of espionage.  Exhibits are engaging for both kids and adults, with state-of-the-art multimedia installations and loads of cool interactives (used with stylus pens + more extra safety measures in place).

Holiday Activities

There’s a lot to celebrate at Port Discovery this weekend. They have special activities going on for Black History Month, Valentine’s Day, Lunar New Year, and Presidents’ Day. A Return to Art We Heart

The National Gallery of Art is reopening its outdoor Sculpture Garden on Sunday — just in time for a lovely Valentine’s Day stroll. It’s located on the north side of the National Mall between 7th and 9th Streets NW.

Sweetheart Stroll

Admission: Free

Looking for a heart-healthy and fun activity for Valentine’s Day? Sign up for the Sweetheart Stroll at Martin Luther King Jr. Recreational Park on February 14th. Starting at 2pm, guests can walk or run along the 0.8-mile HeartSmart Trail. Be entertained and enchanted by multiple photo stations, string lights, and LOVE-ly decorations along the way. Watch for heartwarming messages along the path and a sparkling butterfly garden, too! Registration is required — see available time slots here.

The Heartcracker Ballet

Tune in for a Valentine’s Day reading of the new play The Heartcracker Ballet by Margaret Gorman. In this new work, middle-schoolers Zelda and Therese are dear friends who have been dancing around one question for some time now: How do you admit to your friend that you want to go out with them? Happy Birthday, George

Every Presidents’ Day weekend, admission to Mount Vernon is free in celebration of the first POTUS’ big day. While most of the usual festivities won’t be happening this year, visitors can still tour parts of the mansion, museum exhibits, and the grounds.  Tickets are limited and must be reserved in advance online.
