Light Yards

The annual holiday light art installation is back at Yards Park! It’s free to see this year’s 22-foot illuminated tree sculptures and enjoy some festive holiday cheer at the park’s sun deck. Plan for dinner at one of the many nearby restaurants then stay to play and enjoy the lights (or vice versa) along with views of the new Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge. A few good family dining recs: Due South, Osteria Morini, and Agua 301 are right there, and All Purpose Pizza, The Salt Line, and El Bebe are closer to Nats Park. Festival of Lights
Where: Watkins Regional Park | Upper Marlboro, MD

Admission: $8-10/vehicle
We’ve been doing this one since the kids were babes… Watkins’ sweet holiday drive-through event of more than one million twinkling lights has been dazzling holiday-goers for over 25 years. It’s a great way to get into the holiday spirit from the comfort of your car — bring a thermos of hot chocolate, put on some holiday music, turn on the seat warmers, and take in the adorably festive illuminated scenes. Purchase tickets in advance online and pay only $8. Even more, if you can snag a limited spot, they are also offering horse-drawn carriage rides for the first time ever this year. Extra cost, and preregistration required! Also note the new entrance across the street from Riverdale Baptist School at 1133 Largo Rd.

Even more parks and gardens in the area are brightening up the season with twinkling holiday light displays. Some you can walk through for an up-close experience, others you tour by car. Christkindlmarkt
Where: Heurich House Museum | Dupont Circle, DC
When: Friday, Saturday, & Sunday
Admission: $10-16/ages 15+ and $2/ages 2-15
Huerich House’s annual holiday market and festive house tour is back in person this year. Christkindlmarkt honors the Heurich family’s German heritage by recreating a traditional outdoor German Christmas market in its Castle Garden. Dupont Circle’s only holiday market will feature goods from over 40 local artisans, including jewelers, ceramicists, chocolatiers, and makers of housewares, clothing, and more. You can also take a self-guided tour of the mansion, which will be festively decorated for the season.

Winter Festival
Where: National Children’s Museum | Downtown DC

Scottish Christmas Walk
Where: Old Town | Alexandria, VA
When: Saturday, 11am
Admission: Free
The Scottish Christmas Walk will be back this holiday season! Once again, the parade will be a showcase of marching units filled with the magnificent tartans of Scottish Clans, the stirring sound of Scottish bagpipes and drums, Scottish dancers, reenactment groups, Scottie dogs, dignitaries, classic cars, Santa Claus, and more. The parade begins at St. Asaph and Wilkes Streets and concludes at Market Square with a massed band concert – rain or shine. There will also be other festive events throughout the weekend — see the website for details.

If you’re looking for holiday-inspired entertainment to get into the spirit, there is a lot to choose from! Adventure Theatre and The Puppet Co. have performances especially for little ones, including Chanukah-themed shows. Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical is at National Theatre. Washington Ballet’s The Nutcracker will enchant audiences of all ages. Cinderella is sweeping across the Synetic Theatre stage. Hike in the City

This isn’t a new suggestion, but there is a brand new post from our most recent hike in Rock Creek Park. Our urban national park is a go-to anytime of year, but it’s especially lovely in the fall. There are several great exhibits to experience right now at our local museum. The whole family will be fascinated by FUTURES at the Arts & Industries Building. Laurie Anderson: The Weather at the Hirshhorn is a great one for tween ages and up. The Gun Violence Memorial Project at the National Building Museum is powerful and ever-timely. ARTECHOUSE just extended its immersive Life of a Neuron. The Fossil Hall at the National Museum of Natural History is always an interesting one to explore. And, of course, the rest of our Smithsonians have permanent collections that we never get tired of seeing.

Sock Monkey Saturday
Where: American Visionary Art Museum | Baltimore, MD

Don’t let the holidays drive you BANANAS! Relax by making your very own Sock Monkey—a great last-minute gift, and just something fun to do with the family. AVAM’s huge sock monkey making extravaganza is smaller this year, and all materials — stuffing, sewing needles, thread, visionary baubles — will be provided. Bring a pair of fun, colorful socks if you’d like, but they’ll also have some available for you. Plan to explore the whole wonderful American Visionary Art Museum — read all about it here. The Miraculous Magical Balloon

InterAct Story Theatre presents this free performance for kids and families as part of the Wheaton Family Theatre Series! Synetic Theater’s The Miraculous Magical Balloon tells a wonderful story of a traveling actor and his magical trunk of tricks and toys. Recommended for all ages. Highland Elementary School is located at 3100 Medway Street, in Wheaton, MD.

Virtual Nutcracker Celebration

Celebrate the magical winter wonderland of The Nutcracker with the Smithsonian American Art Museum and The Washington Ballet! This virtual ballet experience is designed for fun at home with the whole family. Join former Radio City Rockette DeMoya Watson Brown for a story time reading of the beloved holiday classic. Follow along with Clara, her Nutcracker Prince, and the Sugar Plum Fairy on their remarkable adventures. Then, jeté into an interactive ballet master class led by The Washington Ballet School instructor Margaret Williamson

Christmas Village

Usher in the Christmas season with this free event for kids and their families in a newly-renovated historic space in DC! National Community Church is hosting a few hours of festive activities including a Santa train, a skate-less indoor rink, Christmas movies, picture with Santa, craft stations, and a hot cocoa and cider bar. Open to everyone — invite your friends and neighbors! Te Capital Turnaround is located at 770 M St SE.

Follies Winter Workshop
Where: Halcyon Arts Lab | Northwest DC

Bring your family to a free special holiday event featuring STEM activities and festive crafts with the award winning Follies toy. It’s family fun and holiday cheer at the beautiful studio space in Georgetown as you get creative with a holiday inspired STEM workshop, snacks and music. Featuring the DC made, award winning (and Toy of The Year nominated) Follies Playset, guests can also enjoy exclusive discounts, Follies fan packs, and giveaways. Winter Boroland

Get in the spirit of the season at a snow day party! At this Après Ski-themed event, The Boro will be snow in the air (yes, REAL snow!), light its giant snow globe installation, and welcome guests to an afternoon of crafts and fun holiday cocktails. Plus, get in the spirit of giving with a toy drive benefiting Toys for Tots!

The District’s Holiday Boat Parade

Celebrate the holidays at The Wharf and see the beautifully decorated boats cruise by on the Potomac along with more activities. Decorate ornaments to get into the spirit, go ice skating (the rink will be back!), plus warm up by the big fire pit and visit the lighted Christmas Tree. Bring the whole fam to meet Santa and make memories during this annual DC tradition!

Alexandria Boat Parade of Lights 
Where: Alexandria City Marina | Alexandria, VA
When: Saturday | Parade, 5:30pm; Dockside Festivities, 2-8pm
Admission: Free
Alexandria’s harbor will shine as dozens of brightly lit boats cruise the Potomac River at the historic waterfront for the 20h annual Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights. Enjoy festivities out on the dock 2-7pm, including a Letters to Santa postcard pop-up, a hot chocolate bar from Dolci Gelati, and a beer garden from Port City Brewing Company.

Family Chanukah Party
Where: EDCJCC | Northwest DC
When: December 5, 10-11am
Admission: $25/family
Join the EDCJCC for a fun morning celebrating Hanukkah. We will have arts and crafts, music, science and a community service opportunity. This program will take place in the JCC parking lot and inside the building. All visitors over the age of 12 entering the EDCJCC’s building are required to show proof of vaccination.

Chanukah at Glen Echo

Glen Echo Partnership is teaming up with Adventure Theatre, the Puppet Co. and the Chabad of Bethesda for a Chanukah Celebration on Sunday. Both theaters are presenting Chanukah themed shows, and between showings of the two productions, there will be a Chanukah Party with refreshments, festive music, and arts & crafts for all ages, and the lighting of the menorah. It will be held outside in the Park’s Cuddle Up Pavilion. Families can enjoy both shows and the Chanukah Party for $30/person, just one show for $15-20/person, or just the party, which is free with a suggested donation of $5.

Chocolate Binge Festival
Where: Downtown Annapolis, MD
When: Sunday, 12-5pm
Admission: $5
Everyone loves chocolate and Annapolis will be celebrating by filling West Street with local chocolatiers ready to help chocoholics get through the holiday season. Prepare your sweet tooth with an afternoon of chocolate decadence as local and regional chocolatiers vend their specialties. The Festival will also feature family friendly entertainment, holiday shopping, and the lighting of West Street’s BGE Holiday Light Canopy – have your cameras ready for that at 5pm! Purchase tickets in advance; only a limited number will be sold at the event.

Holiday Craft Workshop & Elf on the Shelf Scavenger Hunt
Where: Tanger Outlets | Oxon Hill, MD
When: Sunday, 2-2:45pm
Admission: $10
Join Tanger Outlets National Harbor and Kidcreate Studio Alexandria for an afternoon of holiday crafting plus a magical scavenger hunt featuring The Elf on the Shelf! Bring little explorers and imaginations to a workshop for a special craft, then head out into the shopping center to look for the Scout Elves and receive a Holiday Pop It! For just $10, they’ll provide each child with a craft and refreshments plus The Elf on the Shelf activity and clue book for the scavenger hunt. Space is limited so reserve a spot soon! The bedazzling holiday attraction is back at Nationals Park starting this weekend! There was a ton of buzz about it during its inaugural run in 2019, and I thought it was deserving. The world’s largest Christmas light maze and market is dazzling and delightful and really captures the spirit of the holidays. FUTURES

The Smithsonian Arts & Industries Building just reopened with a new fascinating exhibition, to boot! FUTURES spans 32,000 square feet inside, and it’s full of large-scale installations, displays, and interactives that are exciting, powerful, and thought-provoking as they offer a glimpse of future possibilities — and prompt us to wonder how we can contribute. It’s an exhibition for everyone and all ages, and one to put on your must-visit list! Get a glimpse of it here.

Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins

It’s Hanukkah on strings at The Puppet Co.! Hershel just wants to celebrate Hanukkah with the community, but the Queen and King of the Goblins have forbidden the lighting of the candles. Can Hershel save the day and lift the curse for this shtetl (village)? (Note that there will be a special 7pm performance on Sunday for the first night of Hanukkah!)

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical

In this holiday musical, sets and costumes inspired by Dr. Seuss’ original illustrations help transport audiences to the whimsical world of Whoville for the timeless story of the true meaning of Christmas. Max the Dog narrates as the mean and scheming Grinch, whose heart is “two sizes too small,” decides to steal Christmas away from the holiday-loving Whos. It’s been a Broadway hit hailed as an “extraordinary performance” by the New York Times!

The Gaylord National Hotel at National Harbor goes all out during the holidays — and it all starts this weekend. The atrium of the resort is transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with a spectacular glass Christmas tree, nightly tree lightings, the Potomac Express train offering rides for guests, photo ops with Santa, indoor snowfalls, fountain shows, and more. This year there will also be Ice Bumper Cars, a Snow Factory “Snowball Build & Blast,” The Greatest Story Stage Show, and the #LIT Holiday Light Show.

With sunny skies and cool temps in the forecast, conditions over the next few days should be great for outdoor ice skating. Many ice rinks have already opened for the season, and Canal Park in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood will be joining starting Friday. Twinkling lights forming enchanting displays are easily a holiday season favorite. Several parks and gardens in the area have transformed into sparkling wonderlands. Some you can walk through for an up-close experience, others you tour by car. If you opt for the latter, dress the kids in PJ’s, turn up the holiday tunes, and bring along a thermos of hot chocolate — it doesn’t get much cozier than that.

Downtown Holiday Market
Where: 8th & F Streets NW | Penn Quarter, DC
When: Through December 23, 12-8pm
Admission: Free
The DC holiday market (to me, anyway) begins today. It’s a bit different this year as new safety measures are implemented, but the few blocks in the middle of Penn Quarter will still transform into a charming open air market with a great variety of art and wares for sale, treats to savor, and entertainment — though that last part will be presented on video screens instead of live on stage.

National Menorah Lighting
Where: President’s Park | The National Ellipse, DC
When: Sunday, 4pm
Admission: Free, but you must request tickets
The Jewish counterpart to the National Christmas Tree Lighting, every Chanukah, the National Menorah is lit in a ceremony on the Ellipse. Along with the lighting, there will be live entertainment, plus menorah kits and dreidels to take home. And if you don’t mind waiting in line afterward, there are also latkes and donuts. Tickets are free, but you need to reserve them in advance through the website.

Chanukah, Oh Chanukah…

There are even more Chanukah happenings starting on Sunday, the first night of the holiday. From menorah lightings to theatre productions to a firetruck parade, there are all kinds of community events to celebrate the Festival of Lights. See them all in the KFDC Guide to the Holiday Season.

Skate Under the Sky — on the National Mall

The National Gallery of Art Ice Rink located outdoors in the museum’s Sculpture Garden opens on Friday! If there is one quintessential DC ice skating experience, this is it (imo). I mean, you’re gliding at a locale right on the National Mall surrounded by big, fantastic art installations with iconic sights and places nearby. How cool is that? Even better, all skaters get free hot cocoa during this opening weekend, and admission gets you two 45-minute sessions. Make a day of it with time on the ice, visit a museum (or two…or more), and stop by the US Botanic Garden to see the delightful holiday train display. Downtown Holiday Market
Where: 8th & F Streets NW | Penn Quarter, DC

Do some holiday shopping and enjoy a festive time downtown at what, to me, is the holiday market in DC. It’s not even so much about the merchandise for sale (though there’s always an excellent variety of gift items — I never leave empty handed). There’s something about the city block in the middle of Penn Quarter transforming into an open air market for a few weeks that is so charming and kind of magical. A bonus is the free live entertainment along with treats and coffee drinks available for purchase. And after you’ve done your shopping and enjoyed a snack and music, you can pop into the National Portrait Gallery/American Art Museum that are literally right next to the market.

FUTURES Opening Festival

The Smithsonian’s Arts & Industries Building is reopening with a groundbreaking new museum experience “FUTURES.” A free opening festival this weekend includes live-streamed activities on Friday, in-person activities on Saturday, and a public concert that evening. On Sunday, “FUTURES Remixed” is day for the littlest future-makers, welcoming families of all types for fun, pop-up, guided activities and bite-size experiences celebrating the everyday magic of futures ahead of everyone. The day includes “FUTURES” Roulette tours, robot races, craft making, and more!

DC Holiday Lights

During the holiday season, Main Streets throughout the District are joining together to bring DC residents a spectacular holiday experience: DC Holiday Lights! Take a stroll down each of the participating corridors to experience a dazzling array of lights and decor, enjoy holiday promotions, and shop local. Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade

The streets are being overrun with turkeys, dinosaurs, penguins, and reindeer! No, the zoo hasn’t opened their gates — it’s the Annual Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade! With marching bands, Latin dancing groups, floats, giant characters and balloons, and more, the procession is the only Thanksgiving Parade in the DC Metro area. Held in downtown Silver Spring, it traditionally heralds the start of the holiday season. The parade steps off from Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street and proceeds south on Georgia Avenue, ending at Silver Spring Avenue.

Tinsel!

It’s a bit of a haul from DC, but if you’re up for a drive, this new holiday attraction in Loudoun County opens this weekend. The fully interactive winter destination is an outdoor festival with a unique collection of light displays, entertainment, fun activities for all ages, and food and drinks from popular area food trucks and Loudoun County’s wineries and breweries.

Twinkling lights forming enchanting displays are easily a holiday season favorite. A few opened last weekend, and Brookside’s Garden of Lights, Cameron Run’s Ice & Lights, and Lights on the Bay at Sandy Point State Park are also now welcoming guests to their sparkling wonderlands. Some you can walk through for an up-close experience, others you tour by car. If you opt for the latter, dress the kids in PJ’s, turn up the holiday tunes, and bring along a thermos of hot chocolate. Give Thanks Hunt

Trains in the Garden

The most wonderful holiday train display in DC is back at the Botanic Garden! Different (and perhaps better) this season is that it’s outdoors in the National Garden! The theme this time is “Farming Around the World,” and the trains wind through farming scenes from Mexico to Nepal to Massachusetts to Finland — and more destinations across the globe. Even better, just like previous displays, the scenes are all constructed from plant materials, and the details are so neat to see. There will be more holiday decor coming, and it all officially opens November 24, but the trains are there and viewable now, so go get an early look and enjoy the rest of beautiful garden while you’re there.

Side Yards

Side Yards, the nighttime circus fit for the entire family, is back at the Yards. And I can tell you from experience, it’s a super fun event! The evening of eccentric amusement includes magicians, stilt walkers, contortionists, escape artists, arealists, and more offbeat entertainers. You can also enjoy activities like fortune telling, balloon artistry, glitter tattoo, and other carnival-style fun! Food and drinks will be available for purchase, or plan to dine at one of many nearby eateries.

Night Lights

Holiday happenings have begun… A few light displays in the area — Lumino at Rooer’s Zoofari, Meadowlark Botanical Garden’s Winter Walk of Lights, and the Bull Run Festival of Lights — are already starting to welcome visitors. Get the holiday spirit started early (and get ahead of the crowds) as you see the parks transformed into sparkling wonderlands!

One of my favorite KFDC Tips to impart because it’s on of my favorite places in DC: From November through mid-March, there is no fee to roam the beautiful, enchanting gardens at Dumbarton Oaks. Stroll among the various plats, find lovely tucked away placed to sit, and get ready for delights as you turn every corner. Hours are limited, but you can make a longer day of it with play time at Montrose Park next door or a bite to eat at one of of the many options in Georgetown. Museum Shop Holiday Market

Veterans Day may have passed but you can observe it through the weekend by visiting the sites that honor those who have served. Make the rounds on the Mall at your leisure — the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, World War II Memorial, and Korean War Memorial are all within easy walking distance. And while not on the National Mall, another obvious place for a Veterans Day Weekend outing (or a visit anytime) is Arlington Cemetery.

Bring your pup to Victura Park on Saturday for a puppy meet-up and to a chance to learn about rescuing pets from ucky Dog Rescue! National Harbor Tree Lighting

It’s the first big DC area tree lighting of the season! Watch National Harbor’s 54-foot tree come to life with a breathtaking light show in the heart of the Waterfront District followed by a festive fireworks display. (FYI: The lighting will take place nightly through December 31, running on the half an hour from sunset to 9pm and the fireworks will take place every Saturday evening at 5:30pm through December 13.)

Skaters Gonna Skate

Ice It

The outdoor ice skating season began last weekend as a few area rinks — Pentagon Row, Rockville Town Square, and Silver Spring Veteran’s Plaza — started welcoming guests to skate the day (and night) away. One more option begins as Reston Town Center opens. This guide has details on all of them (indoor venues, too), including extra activities to enjoy while you’re there.

Pumpkin Chunkin’

What to do with your jack-o-lantern now that Halloween is over? Take it to Great Country’s smashin’ session and let it fly! You have options to do this: The Silo Drop and the Zip Wire Sploosh let you do the smashin’ yourself, or bring your pumpkin to the Pumpkin Drop Zone and add it to the upside down “fireworks display” as the pumpkins are dropped from a 40-foot lift. (We’ve had a blast doing this!) Smashings are given to the pigs and cows to eat and also composted. And along with the chunkin’, there’s a whole play area of farm fun, plus apple picking ops.

Millennium Stage Celebrates Diwali

It’s a personal neighborhood fave any time of year, but especially pleasant to browse and stroll during the fall. Vendors sell a variety of wares — art, apparel, jewelry, home goods, and food. Inside the actual Eastern Market, food stalls offer all kinds of fresh fare, from meats and cheese to produce and baked goods to fish and flowers. Visit the market, grab a bite at one of many eateries (either right there or nearby), and take kiddos to the nearby Eastern Market Metro Park playground (Pennsylvania & 8th SE).

Underground Railroad Guided Hike

Go on a Garden Walk

Fall is a great time to roam one of the many gardens in the area as seasonal hues brighten the landscapes. Stroll among the many multi-tiered plats at Dumbarton Oaks. Explore, play, and see a variety of plant collections at the National Arboretum. Enjoy the sprawling grounds of Brookside Gardens. Wander around Green Spring Gardens on a scavenger hunt. Venture out to the gorgeous Meadowlark Botanical Garden. Or relish in the peace at the Brookland Monastery. You can bring along a picnic to most of these places (not at Dumbarton) and make it a longer day’s outing.

Fall Farm Fun

Just because you’re not picking out a potential Jack o’ lantern, that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun on the farm. Many area farms have way more to enjoy than just pumpkin patches. There are several great ones around the area that offer cool exhibits, including live creatures. Buddie Ford Nature Center in Alexandria, Watkins in Upper Marlboro, Potomac Overlook in Arlington, Long Branch in Falls Church, and Brookside in Silver Spring all make for a great outing.
